A week or two ago, I posted in CDS some commies covering Chicago's 29 or 6 to 4. They absolutely killed it. I figured I would start a cover thread. May as well start off with Chicago covering the Spencer Davis Group. They absolutely pwn it. Maybe even better than SDG.

That's a pretty big claim, considering just about every song ever recorded (at least most that were any good and a lot that weren't) has been "covered" at some point.

It might be interesting to start a list of covers that are better (in your opinion) than the original.

Is Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower better than Dylan's?

Is Willie Nelson's Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain better than Roy Acuff's or Hank Williams's?

Is the Stones' Not Fade Away better than Buddy Holly's?

Etc

If you wanted to discuss jazz you'd find that every great song has been covered multiple times with each artist putting their own spin on it.

Round Midnight was written and originally recorded by Thelonius Monk but just about every jazz artist has done a version, including about a dozen by Monk himself and at least half that many by Miles.

Okay, both Hendrix and Dave Mason's versions are better than Dylan's.

I might go with Williams over Nelson, but only by a margin.

The Stones is an easy one. Buddy Holly is great, but I always preferred the Stones version.

Here are a few to consider:

The Afghan Whigs cover of Tyrone Davis' "I Keep Coming Back".

Foo Fighters version of "Baker Street" by Gerry Rafferty.

Henry Rollins and Bad Brains "Kick out the Jams" by MC5.

"Bang a Gong" covered by Power Station from T-Rex.

Devo's cover of the Stones "Satisfaction"

Disturbed covering "Sounds of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel.

Only awesome music. that russkie sings Pete Cetera's part better than Pete does. Amazing musicians. And they have that harmonizing shit nailed. the lead guitarist does Terry Kath proud. Well he'd be proud if he understood the workings of a semi-auto handgun better.

Yeah, Jazz is pretty much a coverfest. Everybody covers everybody. And they're all cool with it, cause, well they're fukking jazz musicians. they're good at being cool.

And here is the dude that rolling stones thinks is a dozen or so places behind Ringo.

Everybody in the drummer world is playing for second place when it comes to swinging a band. If you aren't sure what "swinging a band" is, go to 4:45.

SRV's cover of Superstitious?

Zeppelin "covered" a lot of blues songs without giving any credit.

Most (all maybe?) of Linda Ronstadt's hits were covers.

Eric Clapton- Crossroads, After Midnight, Cocaine, Motherless Children, Key to the Highway, I Shot the Sheriff, plus a lot more.

ABB did a whole lot of blues covers.

If you want to see some great live covers, go to YouTube and look up Tedeschi Trucks Band. They always throw a few unexpected covers in their shows, and they really do them right. A few that come to mind are Stevie Wonder's Uptight, Nilson's Everybody's Talkin', and Darlin' Be Home Soon by The Lovin' Spoonfull.

Also The Letter, Keep on Growing, Space Captain, Sing a Simple Song / Higher (Sly and the Family Stone).

Crossing genres is worth marks? Rock'n Roll bands taking on Take Five is dubious, but
I've never heard anything that didn't rise to the occasion. Every version I've heard, has the drummer playing out of his skin and always 5/4 time.

Zeppelin "covered" a lot of blues songs without giving any credit.

Bobby Parker magically travelling forward in time and covering 'Moby Dick' is the most EPCOT cover of all

This may not be the "best cover, evah" but he couldn't have nailed this song more perfectly.

Caught this on NYE, on PBS, on a rerun of the 2015 Library of Congress Gershwin award show for Willie Nelson and was blow away. Patsy would have been proud.

Raul Malo, the amazing voice of the Mavericks.

I read in a Rolling Stone interview, where they asked him who his biggest influences as a performer were, the first three he mentioned were Pavarotti, Louis Armstrong, and Frank Sinatra. Pretty diverse list, but you can sort of see all three here.

Love the drummer. She can bring the thunder almost as good as bonzo.

Nice, I saw Frank Marino & and Mahogany Rush (the name of the band at the time) at the Capital Center around 1979. The encore was Purple Haze, strobe lights, everyone on their feet, Frank playing a portion with his teeth, awesome. One of the best encore performances I've seen.

If I could only have one live album, it would be Live at el mocambo. Stevie definitely got the cocaine/crown royal mix right that night. He was on fire.

wow, never heard this before, it started playing right after the SRV version. Rack the fukk outta youtube!!!

JB just might be the best damn guitarist on the planet. Seems to just get better with age.

The first Day on the Green at the Oakland Coliseum in 1973 was Elvin Bishop, Leon Russell (the Reverend Patrick Henderson and the Heavenly All-Stars), and Loggins & Messina, in that order. All of those acts were great but damn, the Elvin Bishop Group with Elvin's overalls and wild-ass hair blowing in the wind singing Party Till the Cows Come Home, and Jo Baker (oh Lord) on vocals, seriously kicked ass.

SRV did a pretty good job with The Sky is Crying as well.

A lot of other good covers too (Albert King, Sonny Boy Williamson, etc.), but not sure any are better than the original Elmore James.

Thought it was time to resurrect this thread.

This link includes an entire set by Cory Henry and the Funk Apostles. I'd never heard of them before last year when we saw them at the Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl. Seriously rocked the place.
The first song in the set is a cover of another band's "signature song." Turn it up. See if you can figure it out before they vocals come in (don't look at the set list).
