Let say Bro and Bud are out partying after cashing their paycheck. They get a little loud and the cops are called. They don't shut up when they should and find themselves in the drunk tank for the night. Turns out Bud is in the country illegally but the city/county doesn't bother to check on that. Many cities here have the same law -- BFD. They still can't interfere with ICE. That Constitution thingy says immigration, and the enforcement of it is a Fed deal, not a state deal, nor a municipal deal.

Portland is a sanctuary city, and they "fully cooperate," as long as it doesn't require expending any city resources to do it (i.e. use local law enforcement's time, or require extra time in jail beyond when they'd already be there, or research immigration status on the city's dime).


This whole "sanctuary city" thing is almost entirely symbolic, and amounts to a big nothingburger... and I'm all for deporting illegal aliens (who are an insult to my erstwhile immigrant parents).
