Somebody needs to pull Hans Solo's pilot license.

Post by smackaholic »

Back in the news after landing on a taxiway, and nearly on a 737.

http://www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news/har ... rt-n720826

Lefty, how easy is it to accidentally get lined up with a taxiway rather than runway? You ever land on one? From the sounds of it, even after landing, Ford thought he was on the runway and was asking ATC why the fukk the 737 was blocking his runway.

Sounds to me like his vision ain't what it used to be and he prolly should give it up.

1) I have never landed on the taxiway.

B) I really don't know how that is possible.

#) His other incidents really haven't put others lives at risk, this one did in a huge way.

The linked story didn't say if this was at night or during the day. If at night dude has seriously lost it. The taxiway would be almost invisible until just a few seconds before touchdown. Meanwhile the actual runway would be lit up like the Las Vegas strip and would be visible 10s of miles away.

Actually same thing during the day. The runway is going to have all sorts of visual clues. Piano keys, touchdown aiming points, directional numbers, black tire skid marks, etc. The taxiway is going to have none of those. Never mind the fact the stretch of concrete he choose to land on was already occupied by a 737. This tells me that he lined up on the taxiway quite a bit out and then had little situational awareness. Dude kept his eyes mostly in the cockpit and was looking occasionally far down the runway. That or he turned final very short and took in zero clues outside the cockpit.

Bottom line is dude needs a suspension at least if not a retirement. If I had done that you can bet the FAA would never let me fly again.

I figure maybe he just took it out of warp drive a little late and he was still blurry eyed.

Have you seen the kite he was flying? I am 99.9% sure it was day time VFR. Doubt that thing had much in the way of instrumentation. He could have T-boned the 737 and probably not done a whole lot more than scratch the paint.

Why the hell was he even flying that thing into SNA? That place is crazy to begin with. Set you toys down at a non commercial field.

He really does have an awful track record for flying shitty old planes.

What was this, incident #6, or something?

Hell, Derron runs his out of his backyard, and is still batting 1.000.

On a related note: Its legal to land on most any road in Alaska as long as you don't fuck with ground traffic.

He should try building his own planes.

Prolly cause he's Hans fukking Solo ('sup mikey?) and he can do whatever the fukk he wants. Not like he's worried what the landing fees are.

He really does stretch the old saying "any landing you walk away from is a good one" don't he?

Somewhere John Denver is asking, "how the fukk is this clown not dead yet?"

He's wadded up a number of aircraft and been frozen by Jabba the Hut. God must like him.

He's ruined a couple of helicopters too. One was wrecked when he was learning to autorotate and the other he flipped over when he decided to play Rescue Ranger and land in a grassy field and got into dynamic rollover. The grass sets up an optical illusion and appears to be moving from the rotor wash. He got fooled by it and wrecked his bird.

If he weren't so rich and famous, he'd have had his license yanked years ago for his incompetency.

Someone is going to get his license yanked-- unless the Hollywood good ol' boy network kicks in and Ford manages to get the FAA investigator and tower personnel tickets to the opening night of Star Wars XLII.

How in the world does he miss the huge 22L in white 150 feet to his right? Not to mention the 737 that he clearly saw.

Perfect VFR conditions as well.

On the bright side, he made a textbook landing, even if it was on the taxiway...
