Another one of those puzzles...

Why would we be fighting over that?

That one seems much more simple than the last.
Apple is 10, banana is 4, coconut is 2. No vagaries like the last one.

See, I didn't look close enough.
I didn't see the 4th banana in the bunch.
No argument from me.

Re: Another one of those puzzles...
Wouldn't that make the answer 15? Each banana in the bunch should be worth 1, thus apple (10) + coconut (2) + bunch of bananas (3 individual bananas) = 15
I'm open to other explanations.

That does look rather appealing, but, FAIL, I see no coconut or banana in that fruit salad.Diego in Seattle wrote:=
As for the equation, add some rum*, ice and a blender and you may have a tasty smoothie while chilling along a waterside on a hot day.

Re: Another one of those puzzles...
There is no answer because the value of a single coconut and the value of a bunch with three bananas was never defined.KC Scott wrote:we'll all end up fighting over the answer for a few days
The rule as established by the prior two examples was that a single fruit stood for a value of ten. So the single coconut could also stand for a value of ten or even 100 or 1000.
A story problem which changes the rules is a shitty story problem.
So the only answer can be expressed as an equation.

I have no imagination, which allows me to think without any sometimes.KC Scott wrote:^^^ I'd point out you're clueless, but since you're a friend of Pikkle - that's already a given
I went back over the math and you're correct. an apple is ten. a whole coconut is 2 so 1/2 of a coconut is not a whole fruit.... and 2/2 of a coconut is a whole fruit.
I apologize for my error.

Ahh, yeah, I completely missed that detail. My paralegal/executive secretary, Moving Sale, should have caught that for me. When he gets back from Kinkos I'll inform him I'm docking his pay for doing such a poor job. No wonder he never passed the bar.Smackie Chan wrote:Look more closely at the coconuts.Rooster wrote:coconut (2)...I'm open to other explanations.

Sale, I'm removing you from your minimum wage scale and placing you on unpaid intern status working directly... under DiS. Your diminutive stature might cause some issues for you, but think of it as a character building experience.

Re: Another one of those puzzles...
Its a set of fraction story problems, Roach. Each friit represents a whole number. Each portion of a fruit equals a fraction of a number. The coconut halves and whole bananas are a gentle trick without being a trick.
A whole apple is 10. A whole coconut is 2. A whole banana is 1.
a. 10/1 + 10/1 + 10/1 = 30/1 = 30
b. 10/1 + 4/1 + 4/1 = 18/1 = 18
c. 4/1 - 2/1 = 2
d. 1/1 + 10/1 + 3/1 = 14
but there should be a better way to represent the coconuts...what would that be, KC?
