Whole lot of stupid in here.
I don't drink Canadian whiskeys, but many of the best bourbons are blended - it's considered to be a very special skill. Only an complete fucking idiot would mix good bourbon with ginger ale. Yeah, you know who you are. You can also buy single-barrel whiskey if you're so inclined.
Dr. Phibes, I am familiar with the rye from Crown Royal. It's on the far right below.
Tardspray, it doesn't surprise me in the least that you only drink to get fucked up. It's your natural state of mind. Some of us enjoy alcohol in moderation. I only spent $100 on one bottle of bourbon (actually $175). I've sampled it twice now in the year that I've owned it. If I had the opportunity to purchase another bottle today for $175, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
And finally, I am a self-avowed hophead when it comes to beer. The key is balance. The good brewmaster puts enough malt in there to balance with the hops and when done properly, the beer does not taste overly-bitter.

Goobs, put antibiotic cream on that genital infection of yours and realize I was talking about putting ginger ale with cheap ass Canadian blended whiskey. You know the whiskey that won World War II.

Yes, it had been opened. One dram was removed. Get your eyes fixed. I knew Jim Murray had named it whisky of the year, that's why I bought it. The boys from Kentucky were plenty steamed when that got picked. The year before he picked a Japanese bourbon. That really set them off.

Speaking of Rye, I picked this one up recently:
I believe it's only 4 years old ('sup, Diego), but it's a very nice drinking whiskey in the $30-40 range. 110 proof.

Re: Two new additions to the collection
Since I posted that about 6 months ago, I noticed a new Captain Morgan offering on the store shelf called 'Cannon Blast' The bottle is round, shaped like a cannon ball, with a short neck. Perhaps you've seen it, maybe even tried a shot or six, Not as potent or stout as the 'Black' version but lordy, it's the best rum I've ever tasted or partaken in.Captain Morgan Black being quite tasty, I've found, so I usually keep a bottle of that in the freezer. Goes down smoother when it's cold.
It's a good thing I still like my Bud Rice else I could easily down a 750ml bottle of that in one or maybe two nights. Moderation my ass, we all gonna' be dead someday. Might as well enjoy the ride while we can.
That said, as of now, I make that bottle last 3-4 weeks. If you haven't already, I highly recommend you give it a shot.

Re: Two new additions to the collection
I've been a Scotch drinker, but have found a single barrel Bourbon that I've taken quite a liking to. The nice thing about single barrel is its always the best, the not as good stuff ends up blended using multiple barrels.
Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon
Breakig down the recipe
The process
Good stuff. started drinking Jim Beam long ago, then went to Makers Mark, Bookers, Woodford Reserve. Prefer Four Roses over all of those. Most Bourbon is about 75% Corn, 20% Rye and 5% Malted Barley. Four Roses has more Rye (33%) and is a bit spicier.
Good thread, interesting subject, and funny replies from all the peeps who blew chunks the last time they drank whiskey, during puberty.

Four Roses makes excellent bourbons at fairly reasonable price points. I went to a bourbon tasting a couple of months ago that featured regular Four Roses, the small batch, the single barrel, and a limited edition fairly rare single barrel Four Roses called Elliott's Select.Joe in PB wrote:I've been a Scotch drinker, but have found a single barrel Bourbon that I've taken quite a liking to. Re: Two new additions to the collection
There's a liquor store about an hour south of me just across the state line in South Beloit. The participate in the Buffalo Trace private barrel program. The owner flies to Kentucky several times a year to visit Buffalo Trace distillery. They bring out several barrels of bourbon, generally either the Buffalo Trace brand or Weller. He samples each barrel and picks what he feels is the best one. He buys the entire barrel (53 gallons) and they bottle it for him with their standard labelling, but add a sticker that says it was a single barrel bourbon bottled for Everett's Liquor.
The guy knows his bourbon and I get to buy single barrel Buffalo Trace/Weller for $27 a bottle. Weller is a wheated bourbon, meaning they substitute wheat for the rye. Tends to be slightly sweeter than most bourbons. Last time I was there, I asked him if he had any Weller 12-year stashed away. He said he did not, but he went to his basement and brought me one of these:
He said he had 6 of them and that he could spare one for me. I left his store with that and the single barrel Buffalo Trace for $60.

Bwa
I'm familiar with Buffalo Trace, and just finished a bottle of Eagle Rare a month or so ago, good stuff, I imagine special bottling even more so.
Elliot's Select is another on the to do list. One thing I have done is try two different batches of Four Roses single barrel. They were indeed a little different, but very good. Preferred the one with a touch more rye flavor.

i quoted your post Goobs because I could have written something similar myself, down to liking hoppy IPAs. A person can only drink lite beer so long before developing a taste for something else. Of course I like other types of beer too.
I recently tried Col. EH. Taylor, Jr. Small Batch Bourbon and noticed a bottle in your photo when I was reviewing this thread. I prefer it neat, it's sippin' whisky after all, 100 proof. It has a licorice nose and taste profile of caramel, and honey with a bit of a spicy rye finish. Good stuff, I think I like it more than Four Roses Single Barrel.

Go grab a bottle of Eagle Rare (almost dead center in the photo), should be under $30 and best bang for the buck bourbon on the market. By far. Also, the most often reviewed whiskey in the universe. I saw where some eggspurt said that porn makes up 98% of the internet, and the other 2% is Eagle Rare reviews.
Most any whiskey I try, I'll pour it and sip it neat for a bit. Then I'll add a little ice, because as the ice melts, the whiskey will probably release some additional subtle notes. Cheers.
