Tejas is a republican state. Why is FEMA going down there? Shouldn't they be pulling themselves up by their bootstraps?

Yes. My Mom and my in-laws are both spending time with us. My Mom lives less than a mile from where Jim Cantore is reporting from Corpus. My in laws are 20 miles inland from Rockport and expect the eye to cross over their property in a few hours. It took my in-laws 5 hours to go 100 miles to our house yesterday.
Oh and Diego, we would be happy to fend for ourselves on natural disaster for a reduction in our taxes. Until then shut the fuck up and send your power trucks down our way.

So Corpus proper did pretty well. The biggest widespread issue is the power outages which is causing problems with city services. There is a boil water notice, but most homes don't have power or gas at the moment.
No word yet on the in-laws place which was very close to ground zero.

So power is out here in San Antonio. Not a ton of rain but winds have been gusting over 50.
My Mom's condo is in pretty good shape. Sounds like she got power back on this evening. Still have a boil water notice so she is staying with us at least till Wed. No word on the in-laws place. We know the power is out as their answering machine is off line. We saw a few photos near their place where not much was standing.

In laws roof lost about 60% of the shingles and the large accordian glass doors across the back of their living room are broken out. We may try to get down there today for a look around and try to see if it makes sense to throw a few tarps up on the roof. That will depend on what the local sheriff has to say though. We know they can't stay there for now so don't want to go down there and get in the way.
Media attention has turned to Houston and the crazy flooding.
We lost power again last night here in San Antonio but we have nothing to complain about when we see what folks on the coast and in Houston are dealing with.

Re: Harvey
That image of Bush looking out the window of AF1 and being crucified by the press was a good example of the media bias. WTF did they want him to do? Years later, Obama did the same and of course, got a pass, even though he was one of the ones condemning Bush for his flyover. What separates Bush from the D is that he just took it, feeling that was the "presidential" thing to do. Trump realizes it is fukking war with the press, so he picks up their shit and throws it back, along with a good bit of his own shit.

B, I think a community coming together to assist people with catastrophic events is just fine. BTW, I do not extend this to rebuilding beach or riverfront properties. Call this socialism if you want. It is different from expecting that same community to fund regular every day shit for people.

B_Smack's idea of "socialism" is Hilary Clinton accepting campaign contributions from George Soros, while he simultaneously bankrolls Black Lives Matter and Child-molesters For Change...or whatever...

White knuckled my way into work this morning around 430am. It was fun idling through 3 ft of water and watching two trash dumpsters float across the road I was traveling down. Made it in and safely shut our plant down. I'm now part of the ride out crew. I'm stuck in a control room until Wednesday evening. Water level keeps rising in the plant and its currently 12" from getting in. Then the fun begins.

Best of luck Coogs. Hope your casa is high and dry.
I would expect to see gas prices climb across the US this week as refinery production is severely reduced. Corpus Christi had all of their refining shut down on Friday and last I heard Houston's refining capacity is down to 16% of its normal. Approx 30% of US refining capacity is along the Gulf Coast of Texas.

Re: Harvey
Our control room was the first to take on water. We all had to make a break for it in a dump truck in order to get to higher ground. Our particular unit has taken on the most damage and it's going to be a long time before we start up again, but that's the least of my worries. We had two guys who's home got flooded and were evacuated by boat. You know what these crazy assholes did? They went to their parents/siblings house, jumped in a truck and came to work. Their homes are fucking flooded. Unbelievable.

Re: Harvey
Throwing money at cities like Miami, New Orleans, Houston, & most coastal cities up & down the seaboard doesn't seem all that smart in this age of global warming & rising water. Remember they moved a lot of the displaced Katrina folks to Houston.....
Global warming means stronger storms more often, whether they be hurricanes, tornadoes, Nor Easters, etc.
People need to rebuild outside of flood zones.

E'splain how "socialism" would respond to the Harvey catastrophe. Are you suggesting that the best way forward is for the government to seize private property and administer production and distribution of goods in the Harvey zone?
Maybe you think "socialism" is something else entirely. If so, e'splain that.

Re: Harvey
Here's a thought. Stop building everyfukking thing slab on grade. Concrete block and the messicans to lay them are cheap. I suspect the large majority of damage will be a few inches to a few feet of water in their homes. At time of construction, this would not cost more than a few grand. If you get more than that, well maybe you ought not have built there, or you could have layed a few more courses of block and had yourself a basement.
