That is good to hear. I think a lot of us are feeling the same way but soon we will have tasks we can set our mind to which will help.
Freaking media wants to assign blame while the event is still unfolding. CNN ran stories that were picked up by local media that blame global warming for this, and imply local leaders are to blame for not supporting stronger regs. They also ran a story questioning why the Houston mayor (a balck man and Democrat) didn't call for a mandatory evacuation of Houston. What an idiot that reported and editor are. Where would people go? They can't go south (gulf of Mexico), they can't go south west (towards Harvey's landfall where there is destruction), they can't go West as Ft Bend County and others are underwater, they can't go east as flooding continues across east Texas and LA. The only choice is north and that is thru rain and severe weather. But never mind the fact there is 6 million people in the metro area. Put that many on the roads and people will die. See 2005. Idiot media.

Re: Harvey
I remember seeing pics of Coogs' place. Very nice and I am fairly certain it was slab on grade as is most everything in that area. I forget if he built it or not, but lets just say he did. Now, lets say today, wags and the OL can climb into a time machine and go back to meet with the builder. Do you think maybe he might say, so, how much more would it cost to hike this thing 3 feet in the air and have woodframed floor and crawl space rather than slab on grade? I am guessing he'd go with it. And no, mikey, it would not cost 20-40 grand more. Well, maybe if it was a 12,000 sq ft ranch it might. Also, Derron brought up a good point. When you build a 1500 sq ft slab on grade ranch, you are taking away 1500 sq ft of percolating ground. 1 house, no biggie. 50,000 houses, really big deal. Build it on a crawl space with block wall, you lose almost no percolating ground, as the water will go under the house and soak into the ground beneath it.
But all that is irrelevant. we just need to build more windmills and pass more regs. That will fix it.
As for the climate, go look at the records. The 50s had way more big hurricanes than this decade has had. Yes, this is a pretty good one and rain totals are pretty impressive, but that is what happens in that area. As for it being a 500 year storm, do we have good records of what happened there over 500 years? How much of Texas has been paved in the last 50 years, let alone 500?

Not totally my cup of tea, but I respected that he was preaching the Word.
Joel has turned it into a new age power-of-positive-thinking center -- with some Jesus mixed in.
And of course a center for hawking all of his books and videos.
I blame the church elders for what the place has become.
They should have had more spiritual sense than to elevate Joel to head pastor when his dad died.
He never went to seminary.
And you can tell by listening to him.
It's pathetic.
Everyone of those charleton quack Bible bangers has no "spiritual sense". They know how to manipulate people to give them immense amounts of jack. The elders are as crooked as he is. But go ahead and keep thinking they are "spiritual" people. They are flim flam quacks.

Derron, Lakewood Church today is not what Lakewood Church was when John Osteen was the head pastor.
There were some sincere Christian elders there at the time of John's death.
Unfortunately they elevated Joel to head pastor when he had no business being in that position.
John preached Jesus Christ.
Joel does not.

Sure, a hijack here is in order since the monkeys are slinging shit at each other. We got 14 to 18 on a refractometer on pinot noir yesterday afternoon. Pretty high for this time in the season and the grapes are still a bit under sized. With a string of high 90 degree days coming up, the ET rates are pretty high and that pushes the sugars pretty fast since the average temps are not where near that. The pH levels are getting right up there as well. The owner thinks that the harvest could be 10 days early at least, but is more worried about the high brix levels in making the wine a bit too sweet. Yield is average, maybe a bit under.Dinsdale wrote:Derron wrote:I looked at some past weather data today to compare some ET rates / temperatures to brix values in grapes
Aaaaaad on a hijacking note:
Have you done any brix readings yet? If so, which varietals? I haven't seen any yet, but since I haven't been doing the IT shit, and been toiling at the winery, I'm sure I'll be hearing numbers soon.
Also -- are we talking lab results, or refractometer?
There are 40 acres of pinot, and it is all irrigated with drip. I think we should put 10 hours of water on 15 acres starting tomorrow night, check the brix in 24 hours and see what we come up with. If it drops it 3 points then we hit the whole field with 12 hours of water Friday night. I am trying to find some comparison data on the relationship of the brix value to the higher ET rates, but my general idea is to dilute the brix values that seems to be really climbing on the hotter temps. There is much less moisture for the plants with the higher temps ET rates and that pushes the brix up faster. If it works then we will still have to pick the 15 acres a couple days before the rest, but it is all good.
Of course, my payment for all this is free wine and food at all the promo events so it works out pretty good.

Of course you have all the roads and associated paved surfaces where the water is directed towards retention basins and then dumped into storm sewers. In 1996 there was a huge 100 year flood here and the town of Tualatin was flooded beyond all estimates. It happened again in 2007. All storm water in huge area 30 miles by 30 miles had to go there to drain. When you take this water, you channel it into distribution systems and take about 30% of it from 400 foot in elevation down to 150 or so, you get some highly increased velocities, and with the increase in impermeable surfaces with no way to model that, shit got real fast.smackaholic wrote: Also, Derron brought up a good point. Well maybe in your hood they don't like gutters but they are code in most areas. You still collect the rainwater off the roofs, channel it into storm sewers and out into the distribution system. Joel Osteen is a life coach. Lakewood is Church lite. But if it helps some people and makes it easier for people to deal with life's crap, great. Why get all worked up over something you don't have to attend? I do think Lakewood should pay taxes as should Planned Parenthood, The Girl Scouts, The Boy Scouts, The Red Cross, etc, etc, etc.

Choosing to traipse off in those heels, given the situation is, well... wtf can you possibly be thinking about??
Now Don supporters will be Don supporters, so whatever criticism is leveled at him for his performance at the flood scene will be waved off by them.
That is a given, so I will not go any further with this than the comment I will now make.
Don showed who he is yesterday.
I had hopes that he could actually act like a normal human being acts in such a situation.
But he is abnormal.
Lacking genuine empathy, not able to relay the sentiments most of America would wish to have relayed, and worst of all, actually self-promoting.
In such a circumstance??
True character comes through.
He's still a child.

Re: Harvey
I agree that having a permanent swamp under your house is a bad idea. My point was that when the waters rise, they will go under, gutters and french drains be damned. And when they do, they'll suck up a fair bit of water. And that is much needed at this time. Yes, when the waters recede, you'll have a bit of a mess and it will take some work to get it dry under there, but a damp crawl space beats the hell out of standing water 3 feet deep in the house. Maybe they can just start framing with PT studs and cementboard/tile on all the walls, 4 feet up! It would look a little funny. I think it would be better to just get away from slab on grade construction and get everything 3-4 feet in the air. Not sure if 4 ft would have been enough for the Rumps, but it would have been close. I am certain there are many homes in the area that ended up with 1-2 feet of water. A standard crawlspace would have saved them some trouble.Derron wrote:Of course you have all the roads and associated paved surfaces where the water is directed towards retention basins and then dumped into storm sewers.
