Steely is still here

Aww...and here I thought it was the better half of England Dan &John Ford Coley.
Becker was one of the sharpest and funniest guys in the music business. It's often hard to figure out his contribution to the great songs because of course Fagan was usually singing and seemed to have written them. But Becker's amazing harmonic and technical prowess gave the music its polished gem-like perfection, as well as its lasting sardonic character.

Not to be confused with Steeleye Span either.

Denny Dias and Skunk Baxter. Two of many great guitar players to cycle through the Dan. Funny how they had the camera on Dias during Baxter'a solo.

Fagen has to be the most Jewish looking dude ever. He and Becker must have decided early on that they'll have to make it as musicians if they have any hope of getting laid. Who's the red head singer with the chiclets that would make a limey cringe? And why is it he's front and center but singing backup?

David Palmer. He sang lead on Dirty Work and most of Steely Dan's songs when performed live in their early concerts, and co-wrote Carole King's Jazzman.smackaholic wrote:Who's the red head singer with the chiclets that would make a limey cringe?

Talented and smart mofo. His second career is nearly as interesting as that of his first one. Read the Defense consulting career portion of his Wiki bio.Mikey wrote:Skunk Baxter

Becker was the one guitar player that was on every album. Most of the more recognizable solos, and there are many, were done by top studio players. But Becker provided a lot of the sound that runs through all of their music.Papa Willie wrote:And it's always important to point out that it was neither Skunk or Diaz that created the main guitar playing on "Reelin' in the Years".

A couple other great solos are Larry Carlton in Kid Charlemagne and Jay Graden in Peg. Apparently seven different guitarists, including Larry Carlton and Robben Ford, tried that solo before they decided on Graydon's.

And don't forget the perfect use of Rick Derringer on My Rival..

Re: Steely is still here
So, who's the best SD drummer? It is a tough question as they are all pretty damn good. For me it is either Bernie Purdie or Steve Gadd. If I have to pick one, I have to go with Gadd. His playing is perfect.....always. And his groove is deeper than MS's asshole.

Re: Steely is still here
Gadd may be the best on their studio work (check Aja, the song) and is a great drummer still.
Keith Carlock, the guy who has been touring with them for the past 15 years or so is pretty damn good.
Go to about 7:00 for the drum solo.

I guess a safe blanket statement to make is that if Fagen/Becker called you for studio/tour work, you prolly don't suck as a musician. Not even a little.
