Dave Clark Five vs Beatles
Beatles had a one/two punch, Lennon/McCartney. DC5? Clark/Smith, Clark was a fiction - Mike Smith pound for pound could handle them both.
- In 1968 the Beatles considered firing Ringo and hiring Dave.
- In 1967 The Dave Clark Five briefly entertained the idea of forming a record label and naming it after a fruit or vegetable.
Anyone ever pick sides in this battle?

The last few years that has been this building movement to pretend that Ringo was something special. Honest to g0d real drummers like Stewart Copeland going on about how he had a unique style which has been attributed to a lefty playing a right hand kit.Dr_Phibes wrote:Beatles had a one/two punch, Lennon/McCartney. I think it is utter bullshit.
Ringo was a very basic drummer. He kept a beat well enough, but not once have I ever watched him do something and just shake my head thinking holy fukk, a human being shouldn't be capable of that. Ringo coming in ahead of people like Joe Morello and Steve Gadd in ridiculous "best drummers ever" articles is a fukking joke.
Ringo comes in number one in one musician category, luckiest fuller ever. He hooked up with 3 dudes who, while not virtuoso musicians either, were absolute fukking creative geniuses.
Any respectable garage band drummer could have sat in and no one would have noticed. I have wondered how much more the Beatles might have been had they hired Ginger Baker.
I feel pretty much the same way about Charlie Watt, although I believe Charlie had a fair bit more chops than Ringo.

As for Charlie Watts, I remember reading an article in Rolling Stone prior to the Steel Wheels album that he had just learned how to tune his drum kit. Given how shity Steel Wheels was I assume he then forgot how to tune his kit.

My guess is he would have heard one demo from them and would have said they were a bunch of talentless cunts and he didn't want to be bothered.

I know you actually play but Harrison was an outstanding guitarist, and widely recognized as such by his peers. Educate yourself.Papa Willie wrote:Goobs - Harrison was never a virtuoso guitarist. If you watch A Hard Day's Night or Help! you'll understand one of the reasons Ringo was in the band - his goofball personality.

Not saying that anyone's top 100 list is definitive, but Rolling Stone's has Beck at 14, Harrison at 21.

I'm so fukkin' Glad all over the Dr posted this. We've been together for a long long time, and even though Goober may not dress in the best of taste, some of us like it like that.
To those on the sub-average IQ boards like .net and apparently the late CF, I say catch us if you can, and go chase clack bock.
The name of the place is t1b so come on, and (you don't try too hard) come on let me show you where it's at. Because all of the time, this is where I spend bits and pieces of my life.
Please tell me why not to get a move on and where is AP?

Sorry 'holic and Spray, but I'm with Goober on this one. Harrison was a talented guitarist and multi-instrumentalist. He may not have been a Clapton or Beck, but he is easily in the top 50 if not top 25 for his all around skills. As to Ringo, he was a solid drummer, not a superstar at the position, but one of the steadiest drummers around.

Paul was the most musically talented guy in that band. You'd be surprised at how many of the guitar solos are his.

I'd also note, that of the Yardbirds guitarists, technically Jeff Beck was the best...
Page is a better songthief writer and Clapton...well Clapton is a tone GOD...but Beck is the original shred monster.

As others duly noted, Ginger was a mediocre drummer as well. He would have brought nothing more than Ringo did. Fairly methodical but certainly nothing special. He kept a beat for Eric and Jack who were / are among the best at their instruments. If anything, Ginger would have had all the Beatles shooting heroin backstage and then left them high and dry.smackaholic wrote: I have wondered how much more the Beatles might have been had they hired Ginger Baker.

Ginger was a fantastic drummer. Worldclass POS as a human, but you can't take away his drumming chops.
He had to be a good drummer for anyone to hire him, given what came along with the drumming.

RS lists are horrible.Goober McTuber wrote:Not saying that anyone's top 100 list is definitive, but Rolling Stone's has Beck at 14, Harrison at 21.
As I said earlier, they have Ringo ahead of Joe Morello and Steve Gadd. That pretty well says it all.
It is as much a popularity contest as anything else. Also, I believe they are factoring in creativity. If that's your measure, George is right there at the top. He was the lead guitarist for a group which in a few years, completely changed rock. No one since can come anywhere close to the run they had.
But, that is not what I was talking about.
I was talking about George's technical ability to play a guitar. He was certainly good. The best in the band, but nowhere close to Beck, Hendrix, Page, SRV, etc.
If your measuring stick is ability to create popular guitar pieces, I put him right at the top with Page.

g0d, you are one tedious old fukk.
"you're an idiot" pretty much sums up 97% of your posts here, and you can't even manage a shred of creativity when saying it.
George was a pretty decent guitar player and part of a trio of immensely talented writer/composers. He wrote WMGGWs, but notice he got a buddy to actually play the guitar part. Well, the buddy part might have changed when Eric started boning his OL, but my point.......AGAIN..... is that George was not at that level of guitar playing and unlike you, he knew it. I kinda doubt he did it because he felt bad for Eric and felt he needed the work.
His position on one of RS's shit rank'ems does not change this.
