Happy 500th!

Post by Softball Bat »

Reformation Day

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reformation_Day

Reformation Day is a Protestant Christian religious holiday celebrated on October 31, alongside
All Hallows' Eve (Halloween) during the triduum of Allhallowtide, in remembrance of the onset
of the Reformation.

Traditionally, 31 October 1517 is widely held to be the day German monk Martin Luther nailed
his Ninety-five Theses on the door of the All Saints' Church in Wittenberg, Electorate of Saxony
in the Holy Roman Empire...

The just shall live by faith.

Martin Luther was a flake of the highest order. But by breaking the hegemony of the RCC he did aid the progression of free thought; which of course led to atheism as a inevitable consequence. So rack him for that.

So, there were no atheists before Luther, Martin that is.

Find me one. I don't doubt that there were people who realized that what the church was spinning was bullshit. The difference is that after the Reformation it became increasingly more difficult to exercise ecclesiastical control over the populace.

Hard-pressed to find anyone in the 16th century that didn't appear 'flaky'. He articulated the same difference between spiritual and real-world behaviour that Marx identified. Stuck his boot so far up the Jews and the Catholics arses he got trench-foot.

Big props to Martin.

Fuck all that. I'm agnostic. But have I ever mentioned that my great-great-great grandfather was the Archbishop Of Canterbury?

Possibly the most influential one in history. Reunited the church and shit.

True story.

Why would anyone here doubt that Dinsdale's great-great-great grandfather was the Archbishop Of Canterbury?

:)

This glorious "truth" might inspire me to start a new thread.

Great Grandpa Dinsdale, demonstrating the original "2 in the pink, one in the stink" aka "6 pack grip". The far less practical "pinky grip" is a 20th century thing.

Historical inaccuracy. No way can Dins descend from that. I do not see a bowl of good bud, a rack of beer close by along with a pack of Marlboros. Only similarity I see it the hand wave summoning the wench of the night to his quarters, which is a lot more than most of you keyboard beat offs will ever see.

Based on you being middle-aged, and estimating when your great-great-great grandpappy lived, I'm guessing that he was:

Archbishop Cosmo

My guess would be Charles Longley, who presided over the first Lambeth Meetings.

Longley has one of the shortest bios in Wikipedia of the Archbishops in that timeframe as well as a relatively short tenure. Not sure how he would rate as "possibly the most influential one in history". At least according to :dins:

It's not just the length of the tenure, it's the girth.
