Distill America
Went to a local event Saturday called Distill America. I know a couple of the guys who started this 10 years ago. A little over 100 distilleries represented, some national, some local. Bourbon and rye whiskeys were were dominant, as it should be. I sampled most of what I wanted to try in first hour or so, and also attended a seminar about how to blend rye whiskeys (put on by Whistle Pig). Walked out of that with two pint bottles of 10- and 13-year-old rye whiskeys.
There were a couple of mobile bar carts circulating through the main hall with "all-star" bartenders who would commandeer larger samples from vendors and whip up a shaker full of some exotic cocktail on the spot and pour out 10 small samples for anyone in the vicinity.
Finally had to retire to the VIP lounge where a talented young bartender made a Sazerac cocktail for me. If done properly, that cocktail is absolutely sublime. Two of them is sublimer.
I may have been over-served.
Edit to add:

Re: Distill America
Looks like a good time, congrats. I'm still on the lookout for Willett Rye.
Picked up some Michters American Whiskey recently, it is bourbon aged in used oak barrels. Creamy smooth, but prefer Col EH Taylor Small Batch.
I like to mix it up, keeps things fresh.

Re: Distill America
Willet is a really decent rye that took me some time to hunt down locally. Excellent buy at just over $30.

Had a chance to sample this 16-year-old rye a couple months back. Outstanding whiskey. Cask strength - 123.8 proof. A bottle can be had locally for $160.

Re: Distill America
Found a bottle of Willett Straight Rye Whiskey (109 proof) aged 3 years in White Oak online at a store about an hour north. Should be delivered in a day or so.

You'll be pleased. One of the very best ryes I've had is actually distilled in northern Wisconsin. Craft distilling is starting to really take off here, but a lot of it is hit or miss.

Re: Distill America
I've gotten away from Bourbon and moved on to Scotch, specifically Islay. Laphroaig is my usual go to because I can't justify Lagavulin more than once or twice a year. I recently heard about this little number and decided to give it a try. Was surprised to find a peated Irish Whiskey. Not too bad:

It tastes like a campfire. It's glorious.
Bourbon is a bit too sweet for my liking anymore. I need something with a bite to keep me in check.

Buy cask strength bourbon.

All Scotch (and wiskey) is God-awful.

Re: Distill America
I've had some cask strength, not my cup of tea. I was a solid bourbon guy for years until I picked up a peaty bottle of scotch on a whim. I immediately loved the taste and have been drinking that almost exclusively for 2-3 years. Had a few glasses of bourbon and don't enjoy it as much as I did.Goober McTuber wrote:Buy cask strength bourbon.

Re: Distill America
I used to drink bourbon almost exclusively, then drank scotch for years which I liked because it wasn't as sweet. Now I bounce around a bit, good bourbon is a nice counter, especially vs the smoky peat of islay whiskey. Also enjoy Irish whiskey as well as Rye, which I enjoy in Bourbon like Four Roses single barrel or Col EH Taylor Small Batch (both 100 proof).
Highland Scotch is a good one to try as a stepping stone into scotch. I recommend Glenfarclas 10, very tasty and complex, without all the smoky peat of an Islay or sherry overtones of the 12 year old.
