Shaq

Post by Softball Bat »

Why is this guy talking on TV?

Buh... buh, buh, buh... buh... buh, buh, buh...
buh, buh... buh, buh, buhbuhbuhbuh...
buh...
Buh... buh, buh, buh...

Wat?

I can barely understand a word this blob says.

I realize that he was a dominant force for a few years in the NBA.
A force the likes of which very few have matched,

But he is decidedly NOT a force behind the microphone -- and when his buh, buhs are piped into living rooms across the world.

A dominant force for turning off the station.

Unreal.

Kobe might have more titles but this race is already over. Bode Shaq.

Shaq would have been a fairly mediocre player if they hadn't set aside the charging rule every time he stepped on the court. He'd have fouled out of 1,423 games. I believe they've set aside that rule for the entire league now.

Like they hadn't already set that rule, and traveling, aside for Michael "Give Me Three Steps" Jordan?

The travel, carrying the ball, and the charge are three things you won't find called in an NBA game. This is despite the rule being quite clear on these. See also the strike zone in baseball which the rule book says is from the armpits to the knees.

I like Shaq. Seems like a genuine likable dude and is able to laugh at himself. None of the angry balck man that seems to be prevalent in the league these days.

And damn, what a physical specimen in his prime. If he could have ever mastered the 10 ft jump shot, he would have been completely unstoppable. I remember Ewing using that 10 ft baseline jumper to just wear Shaq the fukk out. The only guy I ever saw that was able to handle him mano a mano, was Rodman. He would climb inside Shaq's uniform with him and just fukk with him mercilessly.

If Shaq loved the game like Michael or Magic and worked hard to improve, he probably would have ended up the most dominant center of all time. But he didn't and wasn't.....

Trumps kids are set for life too, what's your point, he's rich? Ok, just another rich guy, read an article today saying there are more billionaires than ever. That's Shaq, one of many billionaires. While Magic & Michael are probably right there too, and are recognized as among the best ever to be on the court.

I'm not sure I'd use the phrase one of many. Coming from where he's come from to potentially become a billionaire is next to impossible. Not many self-made people in the Forbes 400.

As far as being like Michael or Magic, you failed to take into account that Shaq obviously wasn't focusing entirely on basketball during any part of his career and was still a hall-of-famer and the most dominant big man of his era. I'm guessing the man sleeps well at night.

That's my point. He missed many lay ups because he didn't really know how to use the backboard. Being bigger than everyone his entire life he didn't need to work on his game to be good, but never lived up to his potential because he didn't love the game. For Shaq basketball was a means to an end, becoming wealthy, as you pointed out.

Here's an even more relevant stat:

4-0

And Hakeem outscored Shaq in every game of the series.

Shaq was a more dominant player than Hakeem.

Much was made of Hakeem "rolling Shaq" in the NBA Finals, and that is certainly to his credit, but a little perspective is in order.

Shaq was still a young man.
He was a lesser version of what he would later become.

Hakeem was at the pinnacle of his career and his team was a team of destiny that season.

I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt here, since for a minute there, I thought you were insinuating that Shaq was a better passer than Olajuwon. But then I realized there's no way that's what you meant, since that would be the most asinine NBA take I've ever read.

Softball Bat wrote:Shaq was a more dominant player than Hakeem.
Uhm, sure. It's evident from those Defensive Player Of The Year awards he won.

Wait... he possibly never even got a single vote.

How many times did he lead the league in blocks? Remind me again who is the all time leader in blocks (by a wide margin)?

Hakeems problem was injuries, and a frequent lack of a supporting cast. Anyone who argues that Shaq was a better player than Olajuwon obviously hasn't followed the NBA much, and/or has their head firmly lodged up their ass. And when the spotlight was brightest, Hakeem muscled Shaq around at will, and clowned him. Olajuwon was the complete package, Shaq was a one trick pony (and what a great trick it was).

Shaq was a dominant player, which is beyond debate. And Hakeem was an even better player.

You're right that Dream was a much better defensive player than Shaq.
Hakeem was also a better free throw shooter.

This is one of those sit-around-the-bar and debate who was greater deals.

If I was to start a hypothetical team and was given a choice to start the team with Shaq or Hakeem, I would take Shaq.
I would not have to think very hard about it.

Shaq (for a number of years) was an absolutely dominant and unstoppable force whenever he got the ball anywhere near the basket.
This scared the living piss out of teams and kept opposing coaches awake at night.
How the hell can you deal with it?

You can't.

I want that on my team more than I want Hakeem's all-around versatility.

And what a fine debate it is.

But put Hakeem on a team with Kobe, Derek Fisher, and Robert Horry (errr, uhm... scratch that last one), and he'd have all the tiles.

When Hakeem finally got healthy, he had an old-for-his-years, hobbled Kenny Smith, a menatally ill Mad Max, and an extraterrestrial who showed up when he felt like it. Then they traded for a guy who could barely get out of his Gliding rocking chair, and a one trick Ellie.

Then again, on the other side of the coin, if Shaq had the stability of Otis Thorpe in those years, things could have been interesting.

If you had a time machine and were assembling a team, it's hard to go wrong with either as your first pick. I'd still take Olajuwon.
