Let's talk tipping...
So at lunch today in here in CO a number of us pilots were discussing tips and tipping for good service. In the discussion I learned I was an above average tipper. In restaurants for decent service I will usually tip 22% or more. In places where the food or drinks are cheap, I will often over tip for good service. For a $10-$15 meal I will often tip $10. Also in places that I frequent often I will over tip for good service.
For example there is a Mexican restaurant near our house in San Antonio. My wife and I are in there at least once a week. Sometimes for dinner, sometimes just for drinks. Usually we sit at the bar or in this one waiter's section. Because the bar tenders know us and we tip well, we will often have our drinks served before we even ask for them. Even if the bar is backed up and there are lots of people waiting, we get our drinks before others who arrived before us.
I will also tip housekeeping folks who clean my hotel room. I also give holiday tips to the yard guys, garbage men, housekeeper, etc.
The one place I don't usually tip is counter service type places. Bagel shop for example. I come in ask for 1 dozen of x, y, and z. Guy boxes them up, hands them to me and I pay. Rarely do I put any coins in the tip jar. Same at a coffee place, though I don't drink coffee, but I don't tip at Starbucks for example. What value add am I getting from them?
What are your thoughts on tips and tipping in a service environment?

Re: Let's talk tipping...
In a kinder gentler world, like years ago, tip were not considered for income tax purposes (thanks to the party that is always for the working person). I usually tip servers, bartenders, anywhere from 15-25% depending on my judgement of their service. When we stay at a hotel, I'll leave the cleaning lady $5 for every night we are there. Anyone that has to handle my travel baggage will get $5 a bag if they are really helping me. I don't tip at fast food joints.
If service really truly sucks, I will be forced to leave the ultimate insulting bad service "tip" of a penny face down. I've done that maybe three times in my life of 79 years. I think that speaks well for most people.

Oh...you said TIPPING. Sorry.
Waitpersons get 20%, rounded up, if service is decent. Maybe not that much if I pay $100 for wine, but if they know how to cork a bottle correctly and they offer to decant it then still probably 20%. Many "better" restaurants have multiple people serving your table.
Like 88, I used to be in the business. You'd be amazed how you can make somebody's day by leaving a good tip. Often a few bucks mean a lot more to them that it does to you. People who are really cheap can suck balls.
Maid service $5 per night. Paper deliverer usually gets $100 at Christmas. Duncan Hunter gets an annual lump of coal.

20% is where I start at. I'll go to 25 if somebody blows me away. I usually go to well-known local places around here so I haven't had a problem with service in a long time.

I give 20%, sometimes a higher percentage for inexpensive service. For me its rare that service is bad or exceptional, also leave a tip in hotel rooms.

Re: Let's talk tipping...
My favorite local microbrewer makes a seasonal Belgian Abbey. It was originally called Happy Ending when they only sold it in their taproom. Individual beer names can be copyrighted if they are bottled, but aren't protected otherwise. There was another brewer in Atlanta who had copyrighted Happy Ending for their Imperial Stout, so when my guys decided to bottle their beer, they changed the name to Kink.

Re: Let's talk tipping...
I have always thought the 15-20% rule was kinda dumb. If I have a light bill, 15-20 bucks, I am likely gonna be at atleast 25%. If I go out with the OL and she gets her usual 2-3 over-priced drinks and runs the bill up, I am prolly gonna be 20%, tops.

Re: Let's talk tipping...
Let's talk patting ourselves on the back for being nice guys.
I was at a conference last week that had Domestics for $6 and Imports (Corona and Heiniken) at $8 on the exhibition floor, drinks of Jack and other lower shelf booze starting at $10. Hell no tip involved for some guy in a suit to pull a bottle out a bucket of ice and apply bottle opener. One guy gave me a shit look and I told him to take it up with management on the prices they set.
Otherwise I tip generously unless the service is shit or the food is crap. Again, the servers can take it up with management if the cooks are slinging crap out of the kitchen.
I tip on the what I buy, not the added tax.
I have recently become more of an asshole than I already was because California is leading the charge on cranking up minimum wage and places are putting in small print on menus that they are automatically putting 15 to 18% service charges on tabs. Is that going to the service help or are the owners pocketing that and expecting people to tip on top of that?

When that is done I never add more tip. I've seen it done mostly for large groups, like office luncheons, where cheap bastards pay for their meals then run out the door without adding a tip.atmdad wrote: ...places are putting in small print on menus that they are automatically putting 15 to 18% service charges on tabs.

Re: Let's talk tipping...
Couple of other tipping questions.
Do you guys tip at all inclusive resorts? The wife an I have a trip to Costa Rica upcoming and we are staying at an all-inclusive. The Westin claims tips are not necessary.
Do you tip at events where you are not expected to pay anything. Say you were invited to a suite to watch a football/baseball/basketball game and food and drink are included.
I haven't tipped in the wife's company suite in the past because the company adds tip to the servers at the end of the night. But I am not sure what I would do in other situations. I have tipped at golf tourneys in the past. A group of 5 couples had seats in a box on the 18th green at the PGA event in San Antonio. There was one server for the 50 seats. There was also a bar with a bartender and a buffet or you could order off a menu. I asked each of the people for $20. That was a total of $200. When the server first came over I gave her the $200 and said this if for you, please take care of us today. She was shocked and said most people didn't tip at all. So she was basically our shadow all day. Other people couldn't understand why we got such exceptional service.

Back when we used to do all-inclusive resorts (pre-St Maarten), the meals were typically buffets. The servers didn't do much other than fetch drinks. We still always left a modest tip. People living in shithole countries still gotta eat.
