Movin' On
I retired from Navy civil service on 5/26. My last day in the office was 5/3, and mama retired from her career as an RN on 5/1. The following day, the sale of our rental condo in Arlington closed. In mid-May, we flew to AZ to do some house hunting, and found a newly-built home in Buckeye that we're buying. We're also in the process of selling our current home, scheduled to close 6/29. Closing on our AZ home is 6/26.
I sucked at the gov't teat for nearly 40 years, and will keep sucking since I'll be drawing a pension. Seven of those years were active duty Air Force, and ~32.5 year were as a civilian working for the Navy; 18 in Port Hueneme, CA, and 14.5 in DC.
We really only began seriously discussing retiring at this time around the holidays last year, so I've been busy getting a lotta shit done over these past few months. We decided to settle in the desert because winters don't suck there, we can handle and even enjoy the extreme heat, it's close enough to where many of our family members are in CA without having to actually live there, and housing/cost of living is reasonable. We'll begin our drive out there probably around 6/22.
Prolly too early to make an informed call on this, but the preliminary returns strongly indicate that retirement > work.

Congrats on getting out alive, Smackie. Well done.
Frankly I'm jealous. The wife retired a few years ago but I have a couple of years to go. Looking forward to having time to really upgrade the yard. Most people around here seem to have some sort of paid help but the day I can't take care of my own yard is the day I'll downsize.
Be sure to stay busy...

Re: Movin' On
If things get hectic during the move and Mama needs a place to crash and maybe getting away from the frantic packing and unpacking, she's more than welcome to stay at Casa Del Marty.
I only have a single futon...but we can build a cute little wall made of throw pillows between us...and I'll cover my eyes when she slips into her negligee before she slides under the satin sheets.
...because Smackie, I consider you a friend.

Hey Smackie, good luck on everything. If you do come out this way, drop a line, it would be good to trade stories.
Re: Movin' On

A hop, skip, and a jump from Buckeye to Camelback Ranch. Enjoy your Dodger's spring training.
Re: Movin' On
Wishing you and Mama a smooth transition to your new lives. Remember that retirement (from your main career) means that you can now pick and choose other things to do. Since I retired from teaching in 1994 after 32 years of credited service, I have held no less than 6 different jobs including my current part timer on the FSW event staff. Enjoy.

Rack your 4 decades of federal parasite duty!!!!!
4 decades. I used to think of 40 years as being an eternity, since for the better part of my existence, it was an eternity. Then I think back, do the math and realize, fukk, I was between freshman/sophomore years of high school. That can't be 40 years...can it?
Fukk me
Anyhoo, I trust you rnewfound idleness will be put to good use producing the best damn internet radio show onthe interweb T1B.
