Goobs, whataya think about this?

Hard liquor sales are illegal in Ct, so I may never have the opportunity to try it.

I have tried their Corona clone, which the OL bought last week. The only flavor it had was skunk. It was as if Heineken tried to make Corona.

I think what holic was trying to say with his limited grasp of the English language is that Aldi is a supermarket and in Connecticut you can only buy booze at a liquor store licensed by the state.

An Islay at $23? I'd love to try it. The price point to enter the market on the low end is about $45 for those so a halving of the cost would be nice, if the taste is as good as they say.

I googled it.

BTW: holic, take a trip to Vermont. There's an Aldi's in Rutland. Just make sure you show up before dark or you might get shanked.

Or if you know someone who has access to an Aldi (never heard of it), you can look at the back label and see who actually made it.

Duh.

If you've placed yourself in a world where your ideal whisky is either 'peaty' or 'mossy', there's not much to be done for you.

So, it's like the Great American Beer Festival. If you look at the "awards" given out, it's hilarious. Some true garbage gets gold medals. Nope, no corruption there.

I want to taste clean distillate, a huge dose of a well-toasted barrel, and a slight hint of the peat the cooked it with. Other than that... take it all away.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Aldi stuff was reject barrels from Grant's (their Black Label is pretty deece for relatively cheap scotch, but I never see it around here anymore). It's like wineries, I'm sure -- subpar barrels/lots get shipped off for some store brand, or "throwaway label" (like anything that says Trader Joe's on the label).

They don’t call it Rut Vegas for nothing. What a shithole.

It’s what happens when your entire economy is based on supporting skiing for a few months in the winter and hikers/mountain bikers in the summer. The workforce for such places has been known to occasionally partake in the occasional controlled substance.

Rack B for being able to expertly translate my poor attempt to communicate in English for the rest of you yards.

Dins,

Surprised Aldi isn’t there yet. They are all over here, generally in lower middle-class to upper ghetto ‘hoods. Limited selection, but great prices and an absolute model of efficiency. They stores are very lightly staffed with well paid employees that are actually expected to produce. Nice change from typical supermarkets with a bunch of mouth breathers standing around.

BTW, the comment about being shanked was courtesy of my nephew who told us that after my wife suggested a movie in Rutland as entertainment. My other nephew then mention that Rutland was the only place his track team competed at where teachers felt the need to secure all valuables in a single location with constant security. Yea, it's a fucking wonderland.

Like Mt. Hood... which doesn't really have any crime problems, nor do the towns going down the hill. Sounds like a Northeastern problem.

Not a big scotch drinker but I've had a few that I liked.

Tasted one once that seemed like it had been poured through last nights ashes in the bbq. Lagavulin, I think, and I guess all the Islays are like that?

The one single malt that I know I like is Oban.

Rutland is a heroin trafficking hotspot. Lots of bad hombres from NYC floating around there. They should build a wall.

There is a combination of factors.

The people's republic of VT has run most of the legit businesses out of state, leaving behind a bunch of folks that used to have jobs. VT has a few successful tourist towns like Woodstock, but the rest is just a colder version of W. Virginia. Proximity to NYC.

I saw Speyburn 10 at the supermarket for $23. A Speyside distiller with a 43% ABV 10 year old single malt. I bit, and was pleasantly surprised. If there ever was Scotch made for summer, this is one of them, light, yet a full flavor profile. Speyburn produces a lot of whiskey for numerous blended varieties. I checked a number of reviews and I'm not the only one who thought this was a nice buy at the price, basically $7-8 cheaper than Johnny Walker Black, and of similar quality.

Yes, that's how all Islays taste. You either love them, or hate them. I happen to love them. Lagavulin is a special occasion buy. Laphroaig is my go to Islay. Just picked up a really peaty Irish whiskey, Connemara. Different, but I like it.

I like Islays in the fall and winter, seems to go well like hot soup does during that time of year.

I think it's a thread about Scotch. IMNSHO, the very finest Scotch tastes like shit. Bourbon is what God meant us to drink as we enjoy our time on his flat earth. I just finished a bottle of this stuff that I picked up last November at a "whiskey festival".

Image
Almost every barrel proof bourbon on the market is priced over $50. The ones close to that amount, Stagg Jr. and Bookers, are generally seen as the least desirable and lowest rated of the barrel proof bourbons. Elijah Craig started off retailing for $35 (it has since climbed to $40-$45). It would be a mistake to look at its price and perceive it as being an inferior product based on it being almost half the price of its competition. It doesn’t take a professional bourbon critic to tell you that simply isn’t true with this one. Elijah Craig Barrel Proof is hands down the best deal in bourbon.
