RIP "old man"

Yeah, I know, old news, but it looks like this shithole hasn't bothered with a thread for him, so I'll start one.
One of my favorite programs on History Channel and one of the few watchable "reality" shows.
He was quite a character and a typical 50s "man's man". Sort of reminds me of my father-in-law.
He was without a doubt, the primary reason for the show's success. And I am pretty certain that his "character" was 100% authentic. He will be missed and the show won't be nearly as good without him.

His show is pretty much “off the air” completely at this point I assume.
And NPR isn’t on TV.

Re: RIP "old man"
I watched the show before I ditched cable. The Old Man was entertaining, far more than his fat son Rick who really is a dumb mother fucker and gravy trained his old mans business. That worthless piece of shit that was his grand son Cory, with his tweaker face and slicked back hair, that dude was too fucking stupid to do anything, and he looked tweaked out on pretty much every show.
Chumlee snorted one too many lines of blow and got caught, dude was probably paying hookers most of his TV money to blow his fat ass since he likely could not pull a decent chick even some Vegas skank. The only good person on the show was that prick tease chick that they brought in to value the books. She like to cock tease those fat fuckers and make them drool.
They did have some decent cars on there now and then and they did a bunch of guns and the cannons they had were pretty cool. But it is a TV show, and a pretty low budget production anyway. I can just imagine the Old Man on the set, telling Rick and Corey to go fuck themselves when they come up with lame ass ideas.

NPR, PBS, same difference.smackaholic wrote:Nobody.

Actually, not really. PBS has some good shit on it from time to time. NPR, not so much. Everything they do has a strong dose of progressive political bias.

Going a bit hard on Rick, I think. He actually was quite knowledgable. His fat arrogant son, I could do without.Derron wrote:I watched the show before I ditched cable. Chumlee, is living proof that it is better to be lucky than good. Dude is absolutely the bottom scum in the gene pool, but he served a role in the show.
Hadn't watched it that much the past few years. As far as I knew they were still taping, but maybe they weren't, due to the old man's health. We were in Vegas about a year and a half ago and they were taping at the time.

Re: RIP "old man"
I watched it when it first came out, but it quickly became apparent that the show's formula went like this:
1) Customer strolls in with an unusual artifact or object that he has a vague idea about for which he wants to get paid exorbiantly
2) Rick meets him at the counter and admires said artifact or object
3) Rick asks customer what he wants for this item
4) Rick pontificates at length about the history of the item, but knows nothing about the value of it
5) Rick uses a lifeline to phone a friend (wait... that is a different show  )
6) Friend shows up and has a greater encyclopedic knowledge of the artifact than Rick and determines both its veracity AND worth
7) Rick immediately offers half of the item's value
8 Customer hems and haws, but eventually accepts the lowball price instead of shopping it around and spends his windfall on hookers and blow while in Vegas.
9) Rick goes to the back of the pawn shop and argues with his family
Like all the other reality shows based on getting rich quick (Storage Wars, that morocycle/biker shop, the car repair/used car dealer shop, and gold bugs) the setup is the hook. Somehow these people attract wildly valuable commodities to themselves and pay ridiculously low prices for them, encouraging the viewer to think, "Hey, I could do that too!"
You could rename all these shows "Dicker & Bicker" and it'd suffice to explain what is going to happen over the next half hour.

I'll pass.

Re: RIP "old man"
It's a shame about his passing, but the show has pretty much run its course. It's very formulaic and the whole thing is staged. Eh, times and tides I suppose.
