Report: Owners/players agree to cap structure

Hopefully this is that first domino we were all waiting to fall to get things going. The NHLPA lose out in the deal because of what they left on the table before the cancellation of the season. If this is true, this is finally some progress we can get excited about. I wonder how they'll put this system in place when you've got teams like Detroit, New York, St. Louis, Dallas, Colorado and several others that are well over $34-36 million in payroll. I can live with the Wings not spending hand over fist anymore in order to keep the league from imploading. Fingers crossed...

The Globe also reports that the formula calls for a dollar-for-dollar luxury tax to kick in at the halfway mark between the floor and the cap. If the floor of the lowest team is $22 million US and the cap on the highest team is $36 million US, then the 'tax level' will be $29 million US.
The formula would allow wealthier teams to spend a bit more money, but would also bridge the large gaps in spending between higher payroll teams and lower payroll teams.
The story says each team will have its own individual salary floor and ceiling and that this team-by-team payroll range will be determined as a percentage of each club's individual revenue, not as a percentage of league-wide revenue.

If this were indeed the case, it would be a huge victory for the NHL Players' Association, which would love nothing more than to allow larger revenue teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers to spend much more than small revenue teams like the Nashville Predators and Phoenix Coyotes.

Hmm., if this is indeed true..

RACK the Fuck out of Bob Goodenow and the NHLPA for getting over on Betteman once again.

THAT my friends is a system along the lines of what MLB has in place..

From the version of the rumoured deal that I read, teams over the middle salary level (halfway between the poorest team's floor and the richest team's cap) would be paying dollar for dollar luxury tax over that number to the teams below that level, meaning a natural equalization system. That's the check/balance that will keep the Leafs from spending $100M a year on salaries.

If you ask me, it seems like the two groups got over their pig-headedness and came up with a system that will benefit all parties. And as the league thrives, the players will have the same opportunity. That's the type of system they needed to come up with.

I'm glad to see that wasting away an entire season didn't crush the creativity that was required to get the right system in place.

And this is all assuming the rumours are true. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to the off-season. It will be more exciting than the season itself!!

That was my feelings in the beginning. I was willing to wait as a fan if they would take the time and make a system that works for the longterm...not just a system will keep the teams on the ice for now. This may keep all 30 teams alive and as long as they can keep a limit on players' salaries, I think they'll be fine. To have such a low cap like this, gone will be the days of overpaying a veteran to get them to join the teams with big pockets...ie--Joseph getting $8-9 million, Chelios getting $5 million. When the players finally realize that they can't make as much as baseball, basketball and football players, the sport will be better off. The best player in the NHL may only be allowed to make a few million at the most because that's all the league can really yield due to their limited resources. The gap of the haves and have nots were growing by the year and now it will become a game of money management and smart decisions from the front office.

Huh? If the players had any brains and/or balls they would fire Goodenow the first chance they get. They NHL owners:

- get the salary cap they wanted in the first place for the amount they have wanted all along.

- owners get linkage to revenues and the salary cap

- from what the rumours are, the 24% rollback is still on the table.

So they players have lost a years salary they will never make back and when hockey comes back they will be playing for less money.

Actually I guess I do agree with you .....RACK GOODENOW!!!! 8)

From the story:
NHL vice president Bill Daly, the league's chief negotiator, declined to confirm or deny anything to the Globe and Mail, but he did say publicly on Tuesday that the negotiators had moved on to other issues.
IMO that means it's true. If it wasn't he would have flatly denied it.
