Re: Hellephant
Reminds me of a story a NY State Trooper friend told me. He was doing late night patrol on I-81 out of the Cortland NY base. Some guy flew by him in one of those Dodge hot rods, might have been a Super Bee. He took chase in his trooper car. He said he was pedal to the floor and all he saw was the Dodge' tail lights fading away in the distance when he let up.

I was on a consulting gig in Maryland in 2002 and we were working at my clients office at his rural location. Time came to go to lunch and we went to the diner in town. Coming back I said, OK you have to let me drive your new Mustang Cobra, he said sure, so I pulled out on the road and ran it up through the gears and had it on about 126 or so. Coming up a rise he said watch it the cops sit over here sometimes, and they were but they had a dude pulled over and out of the car talking to him. I never let off it and the guy said take the next right then left and into my friends barn.Papa Willie wrote:It didn't keep up with the trooper's radio, though. :)Wolfman wrote:Reminds me of a story a NY State Trooper friend told me. Had to have his kid come get us and he let the car sit there for a few days. Pretty sure that Maryland cop would not have been nice to some West Coast fuck speeding like that.

I still say if I ever hit the Lotto large, I'd go to one of those classic car auctions and buy a 66-68 MoPar hot rod just to tool around town here.
BTW--thew fast i ever drove was when I took my brand new 1963 dodge Dart GT out to see what it could do. Got up to 115 MPH and decided I didn't trust Detroit all that much. Over the 4 years I had it, I got around 3 speeding tickets. Was lucky I was not speeding when I had my bad accident and totaled it.

Reminds me of the time that I tried to take my 76 Buick Skylark up to a hundred and ten. I felt the suspension start to lift up from the airflow underneath and immediately backed off the accelerator. It is just crazy thinking about all the new aerodynamics packages and power plants being added to those classic old templates.Wolfman wrote:I still say if I ever hit the Lotto large, I'd go to one of those classic car auctions and buy a 66-68 MoPar hot rod just to tool around town here.

Granted I have never been a "car guy", but I still don't understand the need for such fast or high powered cars. 400HP is more than is in my suburban that weighs approx. 7300 lbs and can tow close to 8000 lbs.
Guess you get from stop sign to stop light really quickly.

Re: Hellephant
Once when I was around 17 I was visiting a wealthy uncle, who lived about 20 miles from us. This one time he didn't have time to give me a ride home so he said to take his car and bring it back tomorrow. I asked him which one (he had several), and he said take the Mercedes.
It was a white 350 SL roadster, supposedly one of the first on the West Coast, with red leather interior. My eyes probably got sort of big at that point, but I said OK and drove it home. But not straight home. I got it up to 115 on US 280, which had just opened, before I chickened out. I was always afraid that he'd somehow find out, but he never did I guess. Stopped by a few friend's houses to show off, played with the radio antenna, which went up and down when you switched the radio on and off, and took it back the next day.

Not bad at all really for 707 hp. The local tractor pulls at the fairgrounds have had some dudes showing up with showroom stock Dodge V 10's and Cummins diesel engines and are pulling the sled full pull out the gate, while the guys with the blown Rodaks and Allisions at twice that money or more and not making full pulls. The new engines don't sound nearly as good as the Rodaks and Allisions but lot of hp for the money.

Re: Hellephant
Getting 50K out of a 1000 hp high performance engine is not on anybodys radar. To get 1000 hp out of something built from components is going to cost you way north of 20k, and not nearly as well balanced and matched as the crate engine. The point on the high HP is just do whatever the fuck you want to with for as long as it holds together. These newer engines are pretty damn impressive, and some of us old school carb guys just put those kind of engines together now for fun. I have one engine build left in my life on my 71 Ford pickup and it will be a carbed 351 Windsor. If I had he scratch to spare I would put an injected 460 in it.Papa Willie wrote:Wow. That’s really not quite as bad as I thought. You could build one and get 1k for probably a lot less, but getting it to last for much longer than about 50k miles probably wouldn’t happen.
