A couple more examples of people talking about refunds vs total taxes paid.

As 88 has said, withholding should go away so people have a real idea of what they are paying in taxes.

You might want to read through those again. They didn't all mention their refund but specifically said that they paid more in taxes.

It's not really that hard to figure out how much you paid in income taxes. There's this IRS form called 1040. Everybody who pays individual income taxes has one. If you can count to 63, that's how many lines you go down to find an amount called "total taxes" (at least for 2017).
Probably a different line on 1040A or 1040ez but pretty much the same procedure.

On California form 540 you go to line 64. Yeah I know it might seem confusing because...well 1040 / 540 and 63 /64 are so similar, but most people can get past that.
Different states may be different but probably not too much.

Add those two numbers together and you get your total income tax. I assume you knew that.

I think I'll hold judgement until I actually finish my return.

Hence the use of the term "couple." I didn't say all of them.

And yeah it is very simple to figure out your total tax. But a decent number of people don't have a clue. They get documents together and hand them over to H & R Block or some other such return mills and hope for a refund.

Well, it happened again. Amy Klobuchar announced that she is running for President, talking proudly of fighting global warming while standing in a virtual blizzard of snow, ice and freezing temperatures. Bad timing. By the end of her speech she looked like a Snowman(woman)!

What I've come to realize over the years is every president has polices I don't agree with, and any president who minimizes the number of people below the poverty line is better than most. Especially those who say x% of unemployed or a GDP of < 2% is the new normal.
