Zion
So you know the story.
He blew out his shoe and wrenched his knee.
Seems to be a relatively minor injury and he'll be back soon.
Or will he?
Or should he be?
Perhaps you've heard the arguments from those saying he ought to pack it in and wait for the draft.
Something like...
He's shown his stuff.
He's a phenomenal physical talent.
He's likely in line to go #1 overall in the draft.
He's not getting paid (except for the free ride to Duke), and it is peanuts compared to what he's going to get as the top draft pick.
There is just no reason for him to risk injury, and especially in light of what we've just seen.
Wait for the draft -- it is the wise business decision.
So the argument goes.
Your thoughts on this?

Re: Zion
Someone other than Nike needs to sign him to a shoe contract. Make the whole thing about how no matter what kind of moves he makes, their shoe can take it.
It would be the most successful marketing campaign ever.

The insurance policy thing is a good idea. It is the only way colleges will be able to keep kids around for long. I think a better solution is to simply do away with the student athlete charade bullshit, but until that happens, seetting them up with an insurance policy is better than nothing.

He is a kid who can ball. Some day, he may turn it into many millions of dollars. Duke has made an arrangement which will ensure that if he does injure himself in their service, he will still not have to worry for the rest of his life, so long as he isn't a complete moron.

True, but doesn't come remotely close to covering him for what will realistically haul in if he is healthy and is drafted into the NBA.smackaholic wrote:8 million dollars will allow anyone to live a reasonably comfortable life.
On top of his large team contract he will have a shoe deal and other endorsements.
If your car insurance policy will only pay you 10% of the value of your car if you total it, it isn't much of a policy, is it?
That said, I'm of the opinion that he should definitely suit up and play the rest of the season.
It's what he signed up for.
It will be a major twat move if he sits down.
I expect that he will play.

Re: Zion
I think that there are legitimate aspects to both answers. If Zion chooses to not play due to earning potential being at risk, that is valid. But that raises a question about his character and the importance of money versus his desire to win. By going out and playing he will do what he wants to do, which is play basketball, and give those teammates a better chance at the title— particularly since most of them will never step foot on a basketball court as a professional.
So from a strictly monetary standpoint, not playing is the smart move. But if he is the competitor that I suspect he is, it’ll stick in his craw for the rest of his days that he didn’t find out if they were good enough to win the championship. Furthermore, it may be his only shot to win a national championship, because once he goes pro, he’ll likely get stuck on a bad or mediocre team.
If he goes out and finishes the season on court, he’ll show everyone that he has the drive to win— which I think will pay off more in the long run with his future teammates on whatever pro team he lands on.
As for a shoe contract, Nike will sell the farm to get Zion on their payroll. It looks unbelievably bad that the shoe he was wearing blew out— and this after the whole Kapernick controversy. Nike needs a win, even if the bottom line doesn’t reflect it. The shoe coming apart tarnishes the brand. UnderArmor, Puma, or Adidas could score a major coup if they could sign Williamson and they capitalized on the quality of the shoe.

Not even close to tarnishing the brand. My daughter is a marketing executive at Nike. Her and her team were responsible for the carefully engineered and planned Kapernick campaign. When you have a brand like Nike, one blown out shoe is not going to cause you any trouble. All that matters is that the brand was exposed to more people because of the blow out and that is how Nike rolls. They will convert that exposure into something positive with little effort and in no time at all. They are completely unconcerned about any negativity from that shoe.

Yes, possibly three players will go pro. But you seem to imply that Williamson is superfluous, yet without him on the squad that night, the Heels blew them out by 17 points. As for Duke being #1, Gonzaga is the AP favorite... dumbass.Dinsdale wrote:Yeah, because it's not like Duke has the player who will go #2 in the NBA draft, nor do they have the guy that will go between 3-5, and yet another projected first-rounder.Rooster wrote:give those teammates a better chance at the title— particularly since most of them will never step foot on a basketball court as a professional.

Virginia Tech 77, Duke 72.
So Duke has now lost for the second time in three games. Any of you still convinced that Zion is expendable in that vaunted three future pro line up? That they are still a #1 seed? That they deserve the top spot in the rankings?

This clip is hilarious, and especially coach Boeheim's take at the end.
There is no doubt that F. Howard tried to trip Williamson.
Zion just put down a big dunk on 'cuse and came away from it posturing and yapping.
So in that moment, Howard decided to stick his foot out.
He tried to take a little wind out of the big guy's sails.

There is no arguement. It was an attempt at a trip. And done to someone that is in the middle of getting turned around. He could easily have landed on his head. He could have been injured.
It should have been a T, game ejection nd maybe even another game. And if Boheim opened his yap, another T.

Barkley (the young Charles) might be the closest comparison.
But yeah, Zion is more explosive and athletic than Charles was.
I remember watching Shaq in college, and it was jaw-dropping.
Man vs. boys.
Utter physical dominance.
There is a similar feel to Zion.
