Probably not the most approachable cut if you’re not already a fan. But I have an anecdote about that particular song.

Mrs. Mikey and I were in the middle of an extended road trip a few years ago where we drove to my brother’s wedding in Eldorado Hills (near Suckramento). From there we drove to Healdsburg (which I understand is just about under water right now), and then on to Mendocino for a few days. The drive through Anderson Valley is beautiful, BTW. On leaving Mendocino we drove up to Fort Brag and then east to Willits on CA 20 through Jackson State Forest. Driving through the redwood forest with no other cars on the road and the morning sun shining through the trees, I queued up “Dark Star” from that album. She had never really appreciated the Dead, but on that trip she “got it.” We ended up playing more live Dead stuff all the way down the 101 through Sonoma County, Marin County, and across the Golden Gate Bridge during a drum solo that amazingly synched with the seams in the road bed.

I think I played something else between San Francisco and our next stop in Cambria. I don’t listen to it all that much anymore but there were times when the Dead were basically my personal soundtrack. And that was a memorable drive.

To each his own, I guess.

Check out Europe 72 some time. Another live album that came three years later and probably a lot easier to handle. More C&W influences appearing in the music, and tighter jamming. Still my favorite Dead album.

There are a few bands that people seem to either get or not get. Rush and The Dead seem to be the two that come to mind. Rush, in articular seems to be the band you either love or hate.

Dead fans are even more fanatic than Rush fans, but I don't feel Dead non-fans as virulent in their hatred as Rush non-fan is. It's more a meh.....whatever, fukking hippies, kind of indifference.

I am one of the Rush faithful. I like some Dead stuff, but I am not what I would call a hardcore fan. I do regret that I never got to experience a Dead show.

Then there are what I would consider the universally liked bands, The Beatles, of course, being the epitome of such bands. I guess maybe the Stones, pre-1980 would be considered another. I don't get how someone could consider themselves a fan of popular music from the second half of the 20th century and not "get" the Beatles.

I probably saw the Dead about 20 times. Never a bad show, though the last one in 1995 at the Silver Bowl in Vegas was probably the least good. One of Jerry's last shows and you could tell he wasn't doing too well.

A three night run at Winterland in 1974 was probably the highlight for me. The film that came out of those shows was great, though the quality of the recording on the album wasn't so good. Have not gone to see any of the post Jerry incarnations, though I hear that John Mayer does a creditable job filling in.

I just wish they'd show less of the deadbeat audience and more of the singer.

Some types of music are a matter of taste, but if you don't "get" this, you simply have no appreciation for music. This is, IMO, the high water mark of American music.

That's true. And Coltrane was every bit as groundbreaking in his style. This is a pretty incredible pairing. I think they only worked together a few times.

Ellington @ Newport was a must have album. The sax solo by Paul Gonsalves on that disc is gold. Never really cared for the whole concert scene. Once technology got loose, too much of it was not live.

Not only harmony but meter. He plays notes when there shouldn't be any notes and leaves them out in a lot of other places.

I remember reading a quote from Miles Davis saying something like he had a hard time playing with Monk because he just couldn't figure him out.
