Let's arm teachers...what could possibly go wrong

A Catholic school employee in Milwaukee could face charges after a gun accidentally fired and injured a student, authorities reported.

The gunshot at St. Josaphat Parish school grazed a 10-year-old student more than two weeks ago. Milwaukee police say they weren't notified by the school until last week.

Parents of students at the school received a letter in the mail notifying them of the incident. But one family says they didn't get the letter until this past weekend.

St. Josaphat declined to comment on why it took so long for the school to notify police and parents.

School officials say the employee who brought the gun to school has been fired. Police say the employee could be criminally charged in the coming days.

Why not treat the condition instead of the symptom? We don't ban cars because of drunk driving, yet many seem to think banning firearms is the treatment for mental illness, depression, and criminal behavior.

This is a perfect example where this issue should be decided on a local basis. If a district wants to allow teachers to carry they should have the option to do so. They should be able to set the training requirements, safety protocols, etc. If the parents don’t like it they should voice their opinion and be part of the process.

Certainly many teachers have no business handling a gun anywhere, much less in the classroom. On the other hand schools shouldn’t just all be “gun free zones” because a politician or 7, hundreds of miles away say so.

As for armed teachers my take would be no. Most police officers have lots of armed training and still have difficulties. No way teachers can be armed without similar training and annual recertifications.

So you're going over to the school on a regular basis, getting to know each of the teachers that is carrying, checking back to see if there's any new ones? For safety reasons, I doubt the school would even identify the teachers that are packing. Thankfully, that would not get a moment's consideration here.

Labeling every teacher as being unable to handle firearms is being a bit broad no ?? I know several teachers who are combat veterans and if a fight is going on, I want them close by. Teachers properly trained to a threat analysis and reaction level, and then under going continual semi annual training and requalifying at the range should absolutely be allowed their Constitutional right to carry a weapon at their school.

The teacher in this scenario was obviously not trained properly, because guns do not just go off, the trigger has to be pulled. Since there was no threat that required the gun to be at ready, having it unholstered, and then allow the situation to get to a negligent discharge situation shows his training and mid set was not right. He should be fired at that point.

I carry a gun (some times two)every day, and not once has it ever jumped out of the holster and fired by itself.

Post 9 / 11 when the weapons thing started on airlines and I had to stop carrying a folding knife, I looked at the stylus for my Palm Pilot, and took some polymer materials I had, made a pointed "stylus" out of that, threaded the end painted it black and put it on the Palm Pilot. Fashioned a wood handle with a female thread, that was a " prop" for holding up my lap top up, carried that in the computer bag with the Palm Pilot for 8 to 15 flights a month for 3 years. Never even got questioned or looked at, and I guarantee you if it came to a fight on a plane, that shank was getting stabbed in somebodies neck artery.
