Been watching hurricanes for close to half a century now.

There are basically 2 tracks.

Those that come in south of the West Indies usually find there way into the gulf. Sometimes they plow through the Islands, how the gulf stream, hang a sharp right and run up the coast. Sometimes they smack the coast, often they just pass by and freeze to death in the North Atlantic.

This one was gonna cut Florida in half they said.

Gonna fukk some shit up, they said.

Never once have I seen a Hurricane follow this track.

Still waiting.

What ever made the weather guessers predict such an odd track?

The FL government folks did what they had to do and spread the alarm. You don’t mess with these things when there is a chance they come close to your residents.

Further the weather guessers are pretty damn good within 48 hours. At 48 hours they have something like a 95% accuracy +/- 35 miles off the center line track. Outside of 48 hours the variables are just too many to overcome. They do a great job for the most part.

That said they tend to overstate a decent bit since accurate wind speed and surge is so hard to predict. Weather channel and others were showing sustained winds of 185 with gusts to 220 as the storm made land fall. The photos we are seeing of the Bahamas don’t support those wind speeds. Neither did the storm that hit western FL a year ago. When Dorian crosses the US Virgin Islands the only place that recorded wind speeds at or close to the reported values was 250 feet above sea level.

But this just reinforces the fact that anyone who says with certainty what the weather will be like in 10, 25, 50 or 100 years is crazy.

The local station in Tampa was showing models last Wednesday (8/28) that showed the Northward turn of Dorian before reaching the FL coast.

Certainly wise to evacuate some areas on the East coast of FL because of storm surge.
