It's true, he's way beyond what we'd thought, growing up with Zep and the Allman Brothers, Coltrane and Leonard Cohen. Elton John really does possess that which Jagger and McCartney envies--and which has left Elvis, Michael Jackson and Prince dead and gone. Now like you, I don't listen to his music. But he's beyond mere matters of taste--he really is some sort of interpositive, a collected confluence of human experience, sort of like Wagner, but gay and given completely to the late 20th century fads and forms.
