With regard to a national title vs a conference title I've heard a number of college coaches pre-BCS state that a Conference title was much more valuable than a MNC. Reason being is that the MNC is just that a Myth and doesn't really exist in their eyes because its never settled on the field. Kinda like a beauty contest for football. With the advent of the BCS I'm sure some will say it is more legit today than it was a few years ago.
Now a conference title is settled on the field and this makes it legit no one can dispute this. Winning a MNC is about recruiting and getting money out of the boosters and bragging rights for the fans, but its not something that the coaches or even the players can control.
My opinion is that I view the season a failure if Texas does not win the conference title, but how can a season be a failure if it doesn't even get a shot at the MNC. Look at PSU this year, they have had a hell of a season and can anyone claim the season is a failure because they aren't playing for the MNC. (If the Status quo remains the same). Auburn last year did everything right and they didn't get a shot, was their season a failure?
Until there is a legit playoff system I think the conference title is more valuable than the MNC.

Heh, my only surprise is you were able to beat OUfan to the punch with that one.
Even if Texas wins it this year I will still feel the same. Like I said the M stands for Myth. The same can be said for the All-American team or even the Heisman. As long as the media is involved in picking the award winner then there is always going to be politics. This whole damn thread is bout politics in CFB.

Got news for you: even if college football gets a playoff, the media will still be involved, at least in picking who gets in the playoff.Vito Corleone wrote:As long as the media is involved in picking the award winner then there is always going to be politics. You can't know that til a playoff is put in place. For all you know they could go with the winner of each conference as the playoff format. There isn't a lot of politics in that type of scenario.Terry in Crapchester wrote:Got news for you: even if college football gets a playoff, the media will still be involved, at least in picking who gets in the playoff.Vito Corleone wrote:As long as the media is involved in picking the award winner then there is always going to be politics. Just like in the basketball tournament there is some politics involved but it is noting like CFB.

Not a media issue, but still a bitching issue...the winner of each conference may have not played everyone in the conference; therefore, you are still going to have folks bitching and moaning about "undeserved" conference champions. Then politics will be invoked in scheduling and whatever other bullshit you can imagine, rendering an neverending hum of discontent in the deciding of the MNC.Vito Corleone wrote:You can't know that til a playoff is put in place. I've said this before: ND isn't joining a conference anytime soon. If a playoff involves only conference champions, it'll be tainted from the word go.Vito Corleone wrote:You can't know that til a playoff is put in place.
