That's your save attempt?

That?

Believe it or not, you weren't bringing anything to the table that the people who actually know how to punctuate quotations didn't already know.

Wanna link me up where you were "using a parenthetical reference"?

Note that since I was the one asking the question, the question mark was placed outside of the quotation marks.
This is in dire need of some editing.

Show the rest of us where you were using a parenthetical reference.

In the quote to which dins was referring:

....you did it incorrectly.

Without question....

I think we should move on to my more-than-frequent misuse of the ellipses.

That'd be real hoot....

Improper ellipses usage. Eject.

Since when is it "improper usage" of ellipses to indicate trailing off?

Look it up.

Big props to Van and Dimsdale.

BTW, if you think arthritis is fucking bad, just wait until they get you on medication that prohibits alcohol consumption (methotrexate). Not that that has anything to do with driving ettiquite or grammar smack...

This is all nitpicking anyway...

If you're really looking for a cause to champion...

How about taking up for this guy...

the " ~ " sign.

Hell, it's been so neglected in the punctuation world, that I forget what they even call that sign for "approximately."

So, I might have to make the expansion of the use of the " ~ " my new cause....once I figure out what they call it again.

I'm hoping to heck that the "thumb arthritis" isn't rheumatic, which would warrant the nasty drug you mentioned. If it's just a matter of wear-and-tear with aging, then I'll stick to OTC's and keep my Scotch.

Hell, maybe all those years of Nintendo, Sega Genesis, and GameBoys have caught up with me. I'll just have to switch to Civ IV or military/strategy boardgames.

Don't want to.

Not gonna.

Nuh-uh.

Thumbs hurt.

BTW, I have the proper number of dots in my ellipses (three). I just didn't feel like slapping a period at the end.

Good luck, part of me hopes this shit starts messing with my blood cells so I can go back to drinking fuckers under the table. Plus it would make this board way more readable.

Rack the VA, though. $8 a month for perscriptions.

MTLR,
I believe when ellipses are used in the middle of a sentence, you use 3 periods. When you use them at the end of a sentence, you only use two periods.

Of course, I could be wrong..

In that case, you'd have proper use of an ellipsis. Your first effort contains a superfluous dot. Do you begin your sentences with periods, or just end your menstrual cycles with them?

Just to be sure, I looked it up. Ellipses are supposed to have three dots (in fact, that's how the term is defined). When used at the end of a sentince, you're supposed to slap a period on the end, making four dots. The magical "four dot manuever" lets you stick the next sentence immediately after the last dot, which, IMO, looks really frigging weird.

Then again, there are days that properly spelled words look damned weird to me as I'm writing/reading them.

Outstanding, going for the menses smack. Yes, well, as most folks know, the true sign of masculinity is being able to stick punctuation marks in the proper spot on webboards. Any deviation from the accepted rules necessitates the accusation of having a uterus.

This is why English teachers are known for being macho guys at both the secondary and collegiate levels.

Thanks. I am very versatile. I like to intersperse vag smack amongst the pedantic minutia.

"Pedantic Minutia" would be a great name for an album.

Or a nic appropriate for some of our undersized posters.

I'm all over the place? I started this thread by discussing a recent diagnosis of arthritis. I look at the thread today, and you and dins have "Strunked" all over it.

Arthritis? Mea culpa. I thought this was a Fast Times At Ridgemont High thread.

Thanks for the ride, Mike... it made for a fun afternoon.
