Back to the Sooners for a bit...

#30 - Greg Pruitt. I remember Kenny King, but Greg Pruitt was sharing time with Little freakin' Joe Washington. Anybody who can do that is a beast.
#29 - Rickey Dixon.
#28 - Which side of the ball do you like? If it's D, it's George Cumby, and if it's O, it's A.D.
#27 - I'm going to go ahead and say Jack Santee, 'cause I've seen a game from the Santee lounge, and it's nice.

Hey Steve, I remember a pretty good running back out of UM named John Vaughn. Didn't he wear #24 or 25?

Jon Vaughn wore 25. He was a finalist on my "ballot". I just think Epstein had a more thourough career. IIRC JV played significantly in 1 or 2 seasons.

Looking it up.....

Yeah, Vaugn played sparingly in 89 but was the feature back in 1990. He rushed for over 1400 yards and was serviceable. He ended up playing 4 years with NE in the NFL before hanging it up.

Epstein made only 62% of his fg's but was the punter, and kickoff guy as well. He also lettered all four years.

Ernest Shazor is also a decent #25...

#23, #22 and #21 are gimmes.

#26 - Frank Rohr. There were REALLY slim-pickens here. I picked this guy 'cause he played on two of the best CFB teams of all-time.
#25 - Tommy McDonald.
#24 - Little Joe Washington. Sorry, Archie, but you know damn good and well that one of your back-to-back Heisman's belongs to this guy.
#23 - Another slim pickens victim. Brodney Pool, Allen Patrick, or, for one season, Tyrell Peters are about it. I'll go with Brodney 'cause he's playing in the L now.

Is that your gimme?

Catching up . . .

24 - Joe Howard. First great player to play the so-called "wild card" position at ND. Not that Faust had a clue how to use him, unfortunately.
23 - Autry Denson. ND's all-time leading rusher. Honorable mention to Dave Duerson, though not as a punt returner.

I think 22 should go to our Buckeye's favorite player: Timmy Biakabatuka.

22 - I'll give Anthony Johnson a slight edge over Phil Carter. Shawn Wooden also merits an honorable mention.

#22--Quentin Griffin or David Overstreet off the top of my head. most people would say Q off the National Championship and recent memory, but Oversteet was a great wishbone back paired with a Heisman winner and had legit career in the NFL.

moving backwards: #23:

Dewell Brewer since i tackled him (kind of) on a punt return in high school for my Norman High Tigers.*

Woodie Shepard gets my vote though. he was the older brother of Derrick and Darryl--two great Sooners. he makes a great play or scores a TD against Nebraska in the 76 upset of NU in Lincoln. makes the pitch on the hook and lateral, i think.

this game is famous for Scott Hill pre-game prayer in which he says (in OU lore): "Please God, don't let the best team win....."

and OU wins in Lincoln, 20-17.

*since having your molars crushed into your brain and your chipstrap riding up your nose on a textbook thigh tackle when a bunch of other guys pile on is a "tackle" at NHS Harve Collins Field. i'm tellin' ya, those Lawton and Midwest City schools were fucking tough back then.

No shame being second to a Heisman winner.

Touchdown Timmie gave us probably the greatest performance vs. OSU in the history of "The Game". But that's a topic for November(note to self...).

Indeed...the three biggest performances by a Wolverine against OSU in games that I was old enough to remember...Howard in his Heisman year, the Biakabutuka you reference quite often and Woodson in his Heisman year. All three performances came at the Big House and of two of the three were by eventual Heisman winners. You have to wonder if Hart or Henne is having a Heisman-worthy year and we roll up on late November at the Big House...will those guys rise to the occasion like the three guys I mentioned?

Addendum to my last post: add Julius Jones to the honorable mention list at #22, and he definitely had the best single season at that number. I still like Anthony Johnson for overall career, though.

21 - Maurice Stovall.
20 - Allen Pinkett. Honorable mention to Luther Bradley.

#20: Billy Sims. should have won the Heisman twice. Charles White would have been battling David Overstreet for carries at OU. Sims out of the I with 30 carries per game is a scary thought.

honorable mention:

Rocky Calmus: Butkis Award winner and caught more TD passes in the OU-UT game than UT's roy williams.

I would say David Overstreet, personally. We really missed out on his son who ended up at Mizzou.
