Which come to think of it, the Trampoline (that's the Crystal) was the last place I saw a show. They took over the old bathhouse next door, and have a hotel there now.

I'm sure Mike is aware of and respects Elvis's iconic status. Doesn't mean he has to enjoy his music. I respect the hell out of a lot of legends that I don't spend any time listening to.
Well said MgoBlue, I am not a Prince fan, BUT, I respect the hell out of him. I was referring to some left wing liberal music business types who say Elvis was a no talent hack who stole from blacks. I HOPE that Mike doesnt fall into that category, cause if he does, he needs professional help.

AND, let me say why I feel that way. Elvis, along with Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra, are artists of the highest order. ANYONE who remotely knows anything substantive about music, will completely and wholeheartedly understand this fact.

IF Mike does not understand this, I will happily debate him, and in the process, he will become educated. That I can promise.

I grudgingly respect anyone who makes a shitload of money performing other people's songs, be they Justin Bieber or Elvis. However, I have a lot more respect artistically for people who write and perform their own songs, be they Lady Gaga, the Beatles, Slayer or the local country act playing at a bar down the street from me.

OK, mike, what I find stunning is that a person who makes a living in the music business, such as yourself, can be so CLUELESS.

You obviously dont understand that the lyrics of a song, is only ONE part of the creative process.

Example, Otis Blackwell wrote the lyrics to "Dont be Cruel", then he made a recording of it. IT SUCKED ASS. Suddenly, an artist named Elvis Presley takes those same lyrics into the studio, AND ITS REVELATORY!!!! Full of punk attitude, sexual inuendo in his phrasing, his soul on full display for the world to hear and enjoy.

Big Joe Turner wrote the lyrics to "Shake Rattle and Roll", then, Big Joe recorded his own lyrics. THE RESULT? very very pedestrian, very ordinary.

An Artist named Elvis Presley takes those very same lyrics, and BAMM!! punk attitude by a young rebel, young Elvis does a ROCKABILLY tour de force. and you want to compare the artistry of Elvis to Justin Beiber? Are you really this dumb?

Hey Mike, Ray Charles didnt write "America the Beautiful". YET, Ray's version is the ultimate version.

Ella Fitzgerald didnt write "Love for Sale", YET, its Ella's artistry that is legendary.

Elvis recorded 5 star critically acclaimed recordings in 6 different genres of music. AND you mentioned Justin Beiber in the same breath as Elvis?
are you on dope?

Mike, therein lies my problem with guys like you. How the fuck can you make a living in a job when you fail to understand what I am trying to teach you here?

Ella Fitzgerald is the greatest (male or female) artist in music history. WHO SAID THAT? was it bradhusker? NO, guess again.

QUINCY JONES said that. Ella didnt write lyrics either. I am willing to wager that Quincy Jones has forgotten more about music than mike will ever dream of knowing.

Mike, dont embarrass yourself again by mentioning Justin beiber in the same breath as Ella, Elvis, or Frank Sinatra again.

Without the soul and genius of a Ray Charles or Elvis Presley, many many songwriters would never have been able to put their kids thru college, or even been able to feed their families.

Kris Kristofferson, one of the biggest songwriters of the 60's and 70's publically said that he was deeply moved and honored when Elvis decided to record 3 of his songs.

Bob Dylan said the same exact thing when Elvis decided to cut Dylan's classic, "tomorrow is a long time", Elvis turned those lyrics into a 6 minute folk classic.

Mike, the funny thing is this, its one thing to sell millions upon millions of records, BUT, its another thing entirely to garner massive critical acclaim for your studio work.

As far as I can tell, Elvis Presley is in a very ELITE group of artists to have recorded classic 5 star rated music in 6 different genres of music.

Once you have critical acclaim like that, its GAME OVER.

I didnt think it would be this DAMM easy to beat you to a bloody pulp in a debate, AND, I havent even broke a sweat, IN FACT, I havent even rolled up my sleeves yet.

Im salivating.

First off, just to set the record straight, I don't "make a living" writing about music. I've been paid to write about music in the past, and I might in the future, but if you added up all the money I've earned from writing about music over the past 5+ years, it would barely even put a dent in the student loans I accrued in my quest to be a music journalist.

But even if I made more money on one lousy-ass $15 concert review than brad has in his entire music writing career, it doesn't make my opinions any more or less valid than anyone else's. It just makes them more public.

I have no interest in debating you about Elvis, brad. You like him, I don't. What else is there to say? I'm just personally more impressed by someone who writes and performs their own music than by someone who uses their natural (god-given, if you will) talent to perform a song written by somebody else. That's just my opinion.

I also believe that music is not just a matter of taste and that there is such a thing as definitively good and bad music. I think that one day scientists will be able to conclusively prove that the sounds that the Beatles made with their voices and instruments are far superior to the sounds made by Nickelback or Poison. But until then, all we have are opinions. And this is coming from a guy who believes Built to Spill is better than both Neil Diamond and the Go-Gos, so obviously, you'll want to take whatever I say with a grain of salt...

Ive actually been to Graceland. The interior of the house is a "time capsule", left that way on purpose to be true to the times. Its a rather charming house if you ask me. The grounds, all 18 acres are stunning. Immaculate greenery everywhere you look.

NOW, that being said, the property is surrounded by the ghetto. I hear that the powers that be, are in the process of driving out the cockroaches who squat all arounnd the area. Giving them bus passes to Houston, where they can join their Katrina brethren, and collect free checks from Obama from now till judgement day.

Then, the plans will call for attractions and hotels with an Elvis theme, creating a mini-Disneyesque environment, where fans can come from all over the world to enjoy an icon for the ages.

Once you get rid of the riff-raff and their filthy neighborhood, the entire area will be transformed into a utopia of "ELVIS LAND". Restaurants and shops and attractions for all ages!!!

Quote from Felix, "I knew he(Elvis) was a greedy bastard", end quote. Felix, are you an idiot?

ANYONE, and I mean ANYONE who knows a thing about the KING, knows that he was probably the most generous human being to ever walk the planet earth.

Elvis showered his friends and family with expensive jewelry and furs, he would lavish them with gifts at all times during the year. AND, his phianthropy is LEGENDARY. Giving to cancer centers, children's hospitals, many worthy causes including Jerry's kids(muscular dystrophy), etc......

There are many famous incidents of Elvis giving a stranger a brand-new cadillac!!! His giving of cadillacs is legendary.

You think this kind of behaviour is indicitive of a greedy bastard? WHAT would that make you felix? I'd be willing to bet that you've NEVER given anybody a brand new cadillac. IN FACT, I'll bet everything ive got, that you would have a hard time giving your OWN son, a hotwheels cadillac for $1.98. BUWAHAHA. Come on felix, cant you pony up a couple bucks for your own flesh and blood?

Your behaviour is indicitive of the detective in "Les Miserables", the greedy police detective who hunted a poor man over the course of 30 years for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his starving family.

Elvis would have given the man a lifetime free pass to KFC.

Come on Felix, you need to be a more giving human being, and learn from generous souls such as Elvis Presley and bradhusker!!!!

It will enrich your soul my brother from another mother.

Van,
Have you even heard Built to Spill? Anyone who likes Zeppelin and/or Floyd (and hasn't convinced themselves that great music stopped being made 30+ years ago) might actually find a lot to like in BtS. I don't think BSmack was placing them on the same iconic pedestal as LZ or PF, but you could certainly trace their roots/influences back to those bands. It's far less ludicrous than comparing BtS to tripe like the Go-Gos and Neil Diamond.

Rule of thumb: whenever you accidentally find yourself in agreement with brad, it's time to reevaluate your position...

Listen to Live At Pompeii sometime and tell me there isn't Pink Floyd all over BtS. Listen to some of the improvisational material Zep does during their 30+ minute long live instances of Dazed and Confused and tell me that some of that doesn't translate to what BtS is doing. Like Mike just said, I'm not saying they are as massive or as iconic as Floyd or Zep. But they are worthy successors to the legacy of Zep, Floyd, Cream, The Velvets....

Mike, YOU JUST DUG YOUR OWN GRAVE.

You just called Neil Diamond "tripe", so you are now FINISHED in here due to your stupidity.

Second, I HAVE HEARD BtS, and they are a decent band. THATS IT, decent, nothing more.
Third, Neil Diamond is far far better than BtS, his track record in the music business puts him in a category that BtS will NEVER REACH.

See, mike is too stupid to understand a thing about music. So its no use talking to him.

Sorry mike, but you are the guy who doesnt even respect Elvis Presley, when Robert Plant, Johnny Cash, and Bruce Springsteen ALL consider Elvis a GOD in music.

NOW, every single poster in this forum considers Plant, Cash and Springsteen more knowledgeable about music than you are. So if this were an academic setting, You would be laughed out onto the street.

Do me a favor, dont post in here until you know what the fuck you are talking about. OK?

There are four songs that would force me to quit a band before ever agreeing to perform them live, and "Sweet Caroline" is one of them. Sorry brad, but Neil Diamond is the living, breathing personification of tripe. He's right up there with Rupert Holmes.

I hate to be the one to break it to you, but it might be time to face the fact that you just have shitty taste in music. It's a difficult step to take, but trust me, you'll be a better man for it. Take your all-time top five that you posted earlier. You only managed to get two right. How can you claim to speak authoritatively about music when you only know 40% of the best bands of all time? (The correct top five, of course, is the Beatles, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Ween and Slayer.) Even if I give you partial credit for Pink Floyd, an exceptional band that, like CCR, just narrowly missed the cut, you'd still only be batting .500.

But it's not too late to change, though. I'm a professional, and I'm here to help. All you have to do is ask, bro...

ok, so my taste in music is on trial here, FINE, being the skilled attorney that I am, I will defend myself your honor.

Here is what spins on husker's turntable,

Loreena McKennitt, Led Zeppelin, Eva Cassidy, Diana Krall, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, the Cranberries, The Who, Brian Setzer and the Stray Cats, Meatloaf, Fleetwood Mac, U2, Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Beth Hart, Lucinda Williams, Pink Floyd, Collective Soul, Eric Clapton, Dean Martin, Michael Buble', Billy Joel, enya, Rush, Adele, Sarah Mclachlan, Jewel, Alison Krauss & the Union Station,

Obviously, I listen to a lot more stuff, BUT, I feel ive compiled my faves here, the stuff that I never get tired of, the stuff that feeds the soul, the cream of your collection stays close to the player,

Did I hear you say bad taste? Well I would propose to you, that "taste" is in the eye of the beholder.
From any objective viewpoint, the music I love is quite amazing, to say the least.

If I only had "ella" alone on my list, it would make any list you compile, a total joke.

My overall taste in music is exemplery, I can pick out just one pearl from my collection, and we can do years of study on it alone.

Meatloaf "BAT OUT OF HELL" 1977.

A bombastic tour de force of a rock opera thats all at once demonic and in-your-face! The album cover itself conjours up images of satan rising from hell to reek havvoc on unsuspecting nubile young virgins.

Say what you will, BUT, back in 1977, this album took people away from the real horrors of the summer of sam.
