Sam, you really need to calm down about McCarron. He's nothing special. Any QB worth a lick would excel playing in that offense under those conditions against those opponents. The guy has the biggest cushion in the entire sport. His defense makes sure that he's never playing from behind or even in a close game. He hasn't had to execute a single pressure-situation pass all season. His O-line and running game are so dominant that when he does have to throw of course his receivers are wide open. He's a major college QB so he can hit the side of a barn, and any play-action pass Bama attempts is a near certainty to succeed when they're up by thirty against some beaten-to-a-pulp outclassed opponent.

Think he'll be a high first-round draft pick, which is the true indicator of what people who are paid to evaluate talent think of a given prospect? He's not an option/spread QB so he doesn't even have that fallback as his reason for not being drafted highly. He operates a pro-style offense. If he was anything like a Matt Barkley, then guess what? He'd get drafted in the same basic neighborhood of the first round as Barkley will.

He won't. He's just the guy who was handed the keys this year to the easiest QB job in all of college football.

He'll be at least top 5 of quarterbacks. Alabama quarterbacks, that is.

Nope. Barring any serious injury, McCarron will go in the top 10 overall.

Teams' needs may alter that a little, but I'll stick with that.
So you're assuming that the top 10 teams in the draft all need a quarterback?

Nope, it pretty much is just your opinion of McCarron. Have you heard any chatter at all about the guy being a Top Ten pick in the draft? I mean from any reputable draft expert/talent evaluator, not from some drunk yahoo posting on sucktidechoad24/7.com?

I suspect it has to do with the widespread 20-20 vision of NFL talent evaluators.
His passer efficiency rating this year is waaaay higher than Peyton Manning ever posted at Tennessee.
WGARA? What do you think Peyton's efficiency rating would have looked like had he played for this Alabama team with their schedule rather than for his much weaker Tennessee team with their schedule?

You're giving the QB waaaaaaay too much credit. Guys like McElroy and McCarron are not the reason Bama wins. All they're asked to do is not lose the game while completing two or three important short-to-medium pressure-situation passes per year. Any decent QB could "lead" these Bama teams to similar success.

I'm not doubting his ability to win a fuckton of games as quarterback at Alabama. I'm doubting he'll be drafted in the top 10.

Peyton also threw five picks in a game at Tennessee but that didn't stop him from being drafted #1 overall. Why? Because NFL scouts don't give two shits about college stats. They also don't care about MNCs and if a guy's a "winner." At football factories like Bama, all quarterbacks win.

Sam, where do you get that McCarron is anything like a Top Ten pick? Hell, he may not even be one of the first ten guys drafted from his own team.

Digging around, I was shocked to see a site that had him ranked as high as 6 on the NFL charts.

So if 6 of 10 NFL teams take QBs, I guess he coulod be top 10...

but wait...

That's over a year away. Some current underclassmen are GOING to pass him up.

And when McCarron finally plays against an actual defense (sup Geno McCarron), that stock might just drop a bit.

No, Sam, that's not what I'm asking you. You haven't watched 99% of the QBs out there, so you have no idea how he looks compared to nearly all the others.

Is that all you're going by? Your own Crimson-colored eyeballs test? See, 'cause no one else seems to agree with you. Or, if they do, I am not aware of it.

Wait... McCarron dinks and dunks behind "the greatest offensive line in history," and he's better than Teddy Bridgewater, who throws lasers to crap receivers behind a crap line?

It's not too hard to have good numbers when you ALWAYS have the lead, you have the best OL in the country, and you've got a good running game.

He sure as hell wouldn't have numbers as good as he does now if he was Auburn's QB!
You're obviously not talking about his bank account.

I'm guessing the answer is a universal "yes," Sam.

But how can you except us Non SECBSH Yanks to be able to match your discerning eye, that sees this rare talent that no one else (including NFL scouts) sees?

He r5eally is nothing special... deal with it.

So McShay says he doesn't have an elite arm and Kiper thinks he's the fourth best QB in his class. In other words, pretty much what we've all been saying -- good QB, but nothing special.

And merely being the fourth best QB of his class (not of all classes) means he's decidedly not a Top Ten pick.

He still will be playing for Bama, which means he won't have any additional chances to shine. You keep saying that they're going to open things up and become a much more aggressive passing team that goes downfield a whole lot more. You said that going into this year and you're saying it regarding next year.

No, they won't. Presumably Nick Saban will still be coaching them next year. As long as he's there and they're winning by playing Flintstones Ball, don't expect to see any major changes in the offensive philosophy. The QB in his current system is merely a caretaker, not a game-changer. Besides, McCarron simply doesn't possess elite talent in any area. He's not particularly fast or mobile, his arm is merely average, he isn't even asked to execute very many high-risk passes into small windows, and...there's basically nothing there to indicate that he won't be a (short) career clipboard holder in the NFL.

Wait, Sam... I think you're on to something here...

A QB... who got a schollie to a D1 program... a blueblood, no less...

Was a pretty good HS QB?

Sam, of course the kid can throw. He's a D1 QB. That and a ticket of admission will earn him a peek at the Top Ten of the NFL draft.

He doesn’t have the measurables to be a top 10 pick. Why is that so hard to understand? He’s good at several things, not elite at anything, and you don’t really improve things like athleticism and arm strength overnight. He could throw for a zilly yards next year and it won’t matter. Why do you think Ryan Tanehill was a top 10 pick despite playing like one full year at QB for a .500 team?

And that 4.8 40 probably isn't going to improve after a few NFL hits.

Kind of a red flag there.

So then why didn't the Dolphins go with any other number of available quarterbacks who had significantly better stats, and more experience to boot?

Take your time.
