Yup. There's multiple reporting stations in SF. Every last one of them tells us Stoolio is a liar (like we didn't know already).

We have micro-climates,too. This afternoon, it varied between 96 and 100 on my way home. At least the electronic control for the mixing door on my car's climate control took a dump. Hot air. At least the sunroof and windows work.

One of the largest temp gradients (easily experienced) on earth is driving from Atascadero to Morro Bay on the 41 (15mins max) when it is 100+ in Atascadero and 60 and foggy on the coast.

I am headed to Vegas. It should not be very pleasant there this week.

The flights to London will probably end up taking a weight penalty due to the runway and reported air temps.

Trivia: Only one US state has never had a triple-digit temp day since modern records have been kept.

And you won't be able to guess which one.

But at least you're half right.

The state with the second-highest extreme temp (after California, which runs laps around the others) is quite predictably... wait for it... Arizona.

The second highest is also in California.
As for Alaska it wasn’t a part of the US in 1915 which is 104 years ago not 114.

Got me, both on a math error, and a technicality.

But odd when you look at the historic highs -- you'd think they all occurred in the last 5 years. Most were in the 1930's... despite NASA/NOAA's attempt to scrub those records. "They didn't know how to read a thermometer back then"... which if you buy into, you need to go back to junior high.

OK -- go sign up for a college lab class. Make a prediction about your experiment. When you're laughably wrong... go back and alter all of the observed data, and explain to the prof how you were reading the data wrong, so you had to "smooth" it.

Then, see what grade you get after he gets done laughing. Then, demand a bunch of taxpayer money to prove you were right.

Agreed. For one, it wasn't 2000 years ago -- more like 750. And there was a huge warming at the time. What was the Brix of those grapes? I'm sure mildew wasn't a problem, either.

But regardless -- what, you think the booze they drank back then was anything other than horrific garbage?

Anyone who knows an iota about enology/microbiology/fermentation knows they were drinking to get drunk, and what they produced would be considered "undrinkable" today. No sulfur? No specific yeasts? No filters? No spray? No disinfecting? No lab analysis? No... this could go on all night -- and if any one of those things is lacking, you just made undrinkable garbage.

Mvscal posted about the US being behind in winemaking compared to Europe. Possibly marginally true, simply due to "hard knocks"knowledge. But frankly, until ~120 years ago, it was all nasty by today's standards. Then it got all sciencey and stuff.

No, I was correct. I actually went off shit I know, rather than 5 seconds of dwarf googling. The "renaissance" of Northern European viticulture that the Smackoholics like to cite was in the Medieval Warming Period, and peaked around 750 years ago. And yes, the Gods of the Cult have also tried to erase that period from history... wonder why?

Regardless, the heathens back then thought they could grow grapes anywhere... which is technically almost-correct.

And per your stupid (and shitty) link, they produced wines of 10% alcohol...after adding honey. Pretty much speaks to the point of shitty grape growing climate. Would probably have the Brix in the low teens -- aka "unharvestable garbage."

I don’t doubt that strong hot, dry downslope winds could kick up lots of dust and produce very high temperatures – but in the 110 F – 115 F range at most. The 133 F just isn’t physically reasonable,

You know way more about Vineyard crap than I. I was referring to something I saw on the inter webs or perhaps a TV show that referred to Vineyards planted by the Romans. They also benefitted from a warming of the climate caused by something other than humans burning stuff.

They have vineyards in Canada and Upstate New York. What you need is a steady layer of moisture to cover the grape and a hardy grape. That's why you don't see too many cabs coming out of Western New York but a hell of a lot of Riesling.

The bad boy.... of weather extremes in California is... wait for it.

Yreka, Ca.

124 degrees F. for a (high temp)

-16 degrees F. for a (low temp)

miles away... In Cedarville, Ca.

It once reached -65 degrees below zero.

They've recently discovered two Wolf Packs that have made this region home.

California is a badass state.

Sort of the same reason they produce white wines in Germany and Northern Europe from grapes that thrive in cool weather, while red wines are more dominant in France and Italy.

What you need in that climate is an early-ripening grape that thrives in a short growing season, and resists moisture.
