Scott Niedermayer at $7M/season is more than I think he's worth. Jarome Iginla is worth two Scott Niedermayers, but they'll get the same paycheque.

Throwing Rob Niedermayer $2M/season is absolutely, positively laughable.

Nice work Burke. You've won the sweepstakes, but at what cost? Hopefully this big splash will cause the fans in Anaheim to take notice. But then again, it probably won't.

The Kings have more of a following in OC than the Ducks do. Fans were turned off by the way Disney ran the team .

A buyout now for Roenick would count against the cap, a conditional 3rd rounder would be perfect for the Kings to have a solid 1-4 at Center and moving Demitra to the wing.

Blackhawks sign Lapointe, Spacek

Martin Lapointe

TSN.ca Staff

8/4/2005 10:40:01 AM

The Chicago Blackhawks have signed two unrestricted free agents; winger Martin Lapointe and defenceman Jaroslav Spacek.

Lapointe, 31, agreed to a 3-year deal worth $7.2 million.

Lapointe signed a montster deal with the Boston Bruins in 2001, but never lived up to lofty expectations, scoring 40 goals and 43 assists in 205 games.

In his career, Lapointe has 148 goals, 165 assists and 313 points in 757 games.

He played his first seven NHL seasons in Detroit, winning two Stanley Cups with the Red Wings.

Spacek agreed to a one-year deal for $2.25 million. He had 5 goals and 22 points for Columbus in 2003-04.
2 plus mil for Lapointe, a glorified grinder?

Not a big fan of Mike Madonna, but it's nice to see him stay in Dallas. He wouldn't look natural anywhere else.

The Neidermayer boys account for 1/4 of your salary Anaheim.

What's up with Giguere? He's in Hamburg last I heard. He'd be under contract at 5 mil/per less 25%, so that's still $3.75 milly.

Never hire a duck for a financial advisor, I guess.

The media here in Ottawa were already printing out 'Lapointe' Senator's jerseys. I guess they'll have to go back to planning the parade route now.

I completely agree with that. Rob has always been an injury-prone POS.

LaPointe to the Blackhawks.

3 years, 7.2 million.

And Darren McCarty is only worth $900,000?!?!?! A fool and his money are soon parted, and the fools are coming out in droves diguised as NHL general managers.

Another team overpays for Lapointe. I thought the Wings would take a run at him again but not at that price. If they weren't going to keep McCarty at $1.7 per, they weren't going to give Marty $2+ million. I think the Wings would've kept McCarty if his salary was only $900K. A few hundred thousand dollars difference will be a big deal in the salary cap era.

I just heard something that made me laugh my ass off. A buddy of mine just told me that on 'Leafs Lunch' (a local show in Toronto) they said the Leafs were trying to get a Zetterberg/Antropov deal going. I can just picture how that conversation would go:

JFJ: Hi Ken, it's junior here how's it going?

Holland: Not bad, what's up?

JFJ: We really like that Zetterberg kid you guys got. He's got lots of potential. I was thinking we could...ahhhh...I don't know...work out a deal? I have some young talent too. I mean, I can throw in Antropov.

Holland: **click**

JFJ: Hello...hello? Anybody there? Must have got disconnected. I think I'll try again. I was even going to throw in Belak!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

 Pretty much.

I can't see Zetterberg moving. Datsyuk maybe (but hopefully not). Those two kids and Robert Lang are the future of the Red Wings offense. I'm pretty sure Ken will do what it takes to keep them.

Considering the Flyers were asking for Frolov originally, the Kings got over big time. Philly had to get rid of JR though to get under the cap...

more signings.

Zhamnov to the B's. Tverdovsky to the 'Canes. Martin Prusek to the Senators to back up Hasek.

Re: Satan's contract w/ the Isles.......
Meanwhile, Miro Satan's three-year deal with the New York Islanders on Tuesday was worth $12.765 million. He'll earn $4.015 million this season, $4.25 million in 2006-07, $4.5 million in 2007-08.
Considering the league will likely lose revenue and the cap is going to fall, isn't it pretty big gamble to backload salaries like this (even though the increases aren't that great)? Who else is doing it?

Posted: Thu Aug 04, 2005 8:07 pm
by JD
Backloading doesn't matter. The yearly average of the contract is what counts against the cap.

Good move by Darryl Sutter to get Langkow signed long-term.

I find it strange that Tverdovsky and Ozolinsh both find themselves back in the NHL this year. I guess some teams really do think things are going to open up. Even if they do, you still have to be able to play some defense.

As teams add players, is there anywhere that keeps tabs on a team's salary cap situation?

Posted: Thu Aug 04, 2005 8:18 pm

Now THAT is a good question. Most clubs are trying to give themselves about a few million dollars wiggle room (well, not the Flyers) as that $39M cap is sure to come down.

That's exacly it- signing Forsberg put us over the cap... and if it comes down to a choice of JR (as much as I like him) or Forsberg... I'll take Pete any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Future considerations are best b/c we couldn't do much else now anyway due to salary cap restrictions. Word is Handzus may be dumped as well...

Roenick basically agreed with you,
Roenick said in a radio interview Wednesday night that he would've liked to remain with the Flyers, but wouldn't stand in the way of letting the team acquire ``the best player in the world.''

SPECTOR'S MAILBAG.

My thanks to "Santo" for the following: "Mojo 640 in Toronto is reporting that the Toronto Maple Leafs have made a substancial offer to Detroit forward Henrik Zetterberg.

Zetterberg is a restricted free agent so detroit will now have the opportunity to match toronto's offer, however in doing so it is said that Detroit will then be over the salary cap! "

Spector's Note: My thanks to everyone else who sent this in, but "Santo" was first and he gets the honours. Anyway, if this story is true it would be a crafty move by the Maple Leafs, who'd likely lose two or three draft picks in compensation, although that likely wouldn't both Leafs management. If Ferguson can pull this off it'll be quite a coup. Hopefully we'll get more verification on this soon

Toronto's back in the game.

The Leafs re-signed Tie Domi to a 2 yr 2.5 million contract.

I'm a Domi supporter and all and sure, from a sentimental aspect it's nice to see Domi finish his career as a Leaf... but sweet jesus, this franchise needs to make one more move immediately.

Fire JFJ before he screws this up any more than he already has.

Shit, JFJ is starting to make Larry Pleau look like the second coming of Sam Pollock..

I'm glad they signed Domi. In the playoffs, you won't find a player who works harder than him. He may not get a lot of points, but he is willing to go into the corners and do the dirty work.

I'd like to think (this is what I keep telling myself) that the Leafs are planning for next year. Given the fact that the Leafs have no wiggle room under the cap, there isn't much you can do. Suck it up, take a chance on some injured guys like Lindros, Allison, and Kariya and sign some blue-chippers next year.

My heart tells me that this is the case, my head tells me that this just example #1,298 of Leafs management and ownership showing their stupidity and caring more about the bottom line than icing a winning product.

Where JFJ screwed up royally is not buying out Belfour and McCabe. There is over $8 million they could have used some of that to sign Niedemayer and given the Leafs a top-five defensemen that they haven't had since Salming. They could have even signed Leetch to play for a year with that money. They would be a great influence on the younger Leafs defensive corps like Bell, Pilar, Coliacovo.

As much as I want to shit all over JFJ and the Leafs, if they do sign Lindros, Kariya, and Allison and they stay healthy the team is a shoe-in for the playoffs. There are still a LOT of shitty teams in the East, so the Leafs don't have to improve a great deal to be assured a playoff spot at least.

I agree, and so would most people. We are talking about Chicago though. They only see pay-per-view dollars and that's it. They don't realize that you actually have to have quite a few people willing to purchase a PPV to make money.

Neither do Hawk fans. Bill Wirtz is caught in a 50's time warp. He has a franchise steeped in tradition with the best uniform in all of sports and has but a small but incredibly passionate fan base (most of the city doesn't even know a team exists) yet doesn't want it to grow. I lived there 15 years ago when he "didn't want to slap his season ticket holders in the face by putting home games on TV" and thought airing those games would cut into his stading room ticket sales. Can you believe that? You know Wirtz is in the building if his Amish buggy is parked out back. He doesn't realize his team has little more than a cult following with thousands of potential fans in the area who have barely heard of the Blackhawks. I'm guessing tv games might help this but I don't think he's interested. Meanwhile, many a disgusted/frustrated Hawk fan truge on.....
