From my un-biased view, "BAT OUT OF HELL" is a "MASTERWORK". It is a rock n roll tour de force.
It has all the elements you need for a CLASSIC. Stinging, piercing high ass vocals, Bombastic BALLSY cocksure attitude, DEMONIC themes with the DEVIL himself into the details. Sexy Italian babes dripping with sex!! Layers of ROCK GUITARS with electrifying riffs!!! Every song tells the story of young nubile teenage lust. The entire album grabs you by the throat and balls, and never lets go for a second!!
The lyrics by Jim Steinmann are all at once poetic and IN YOUR FACE. Meatloaf HIMSELF is a 300 pound ball of sweat drugs and rock n roll. His SOUL is on FULL display here and its Jaw Dropping!!
This is a rock opera with demonic elements, make no mistake here, This is a testosterone-filled tale of teenaged angst and rage, hormones out of control, OVER THE TOP!!!!

MEAT was at the top of his game here. NEVER again would he be able to hit such highs with screaming clarity, This was his zenith, his BEST, his machismo, his balls on full display for all the world to see. Its a perfect record in every way shape and form.

Stole? Nonsense, it was bought and paid for. The album wouldn’t have gotten made without Todd Rundgren. Here's an interesting interview with Jim Steinman (Bat Out of Hell songwriter):

http://www.carpe-jugulum.com/steinman/batinterview.html
VH1: Did he (Todd Rundgren) think your idea for the motorcycle sound on "Bat Out Of Hell" was a bad idea?

Steinman: We had that whole song down and it was brilliant. I think Todd felt it was all over. But I was like, "Where's the motorcycle?" He says, "Oh, you want a motorcycle. A thousand background vocals, a million guitar solos, a ten-minute song...and you want a motorcycle." "Yeah, I want a motorcycle. Do you have motorcycle sound effects?" He says, "No. I'll do it with my guitar." He went over to his guitar rack and said, "Let's see, motorcycle...here we go." He goes, "I forgot to ask you. Is it a Yamaha, a Kawasaki, or a Harley Davidson?" I said, "Harley-Davidson." "I thought so. Why did I even ask?" He goes and adjusts three buttons on his guitar rack and did the motorcycle with his guitar. You hear it rev up, you hear the motor, you hear the fire coming out of it, and you hear it do a wheelie. I thought he was going to stop for gas.

From the wikipedia entry on The Last Waltz:
Neil Diamond was next, introducing his "Dry Your Eyes" by saying, "I'm only gonna do one song, but I'm gonna do it good." Robertson had also produced Diamond's album Beautiful Noise the same year and co-wrote "Dry Your Eyes," which during the concert he hailed as a "great song." In his autobiography, Levon Helm was critical of the inclusion of Diamond, not discerning any musical connection to The Band. Reportedly, when Diamond came off stage he remarked to Dylan, "Follow that," to which Dylan responded, "What do I have to do, go on stage and fall asleep?"

Just so you know Mgo, I was a pimply faced teenager filled with angst and lust 24/7 when that album came out, I'd be walking around with a raging hard-on for hours on end. THEN this bombastic TOUR DE FORCE hits the airwaves!!! AND BAMMM!!! Suddenly this teenaged nobody went from nothing, to a hard core leather jacket, chain smoking greaser, fucking hot chicks left and right, SUDDENLY, on a hot summer night, I BECAME A WOLF WITH RED ROSES!!! Young nubile chicks were offering their soft supple throats to me!!!

SO dont give me shit about rolling stone motherfucker, SHIT, I didnt have to read some critics take, I LIVED IT!!!! I felt the demonic presence of filthy vile creatures emerging from the pits of hell, TO FUCK HOT CHICKS and KICK SOME SERIOUS ASS!!!!

NOW, some 30 plus years later, I can look back, read the great reviews of that album and revel in the fact that I knew the greatness of that rock n roll record before ANY critic put pen to paper.

Sorry you dont feel the same Mgo, Maybe you dont have the testosterone flowing thru you like I do.

SAM, "Bat Out Of Hell" is NOT commercial pap. It is a classic Rock Opera, IF you would like an example of commercial pap, just look at todays' garbage.

If I may be so bold, If I didnt bring up the fact that "Bat" was considered a classic record, you and most others on this board, would have indeed written it off as commercial pap.

HENCE the topic of this thread, "UNDER-RATED". My point exactly. thank you very much.

Have you even heard Built to Spill?
Yes, I have. After hearing B Smack and Smackie play them on their radio shows and after hearing a few of the guys in Chat raving about them, I took part of a day a few weeks ago to sit down and listen to as many clips of them as I could find.

Suffice it to say, anyone who would mention them in the same breath as Zeppelin or Pink Floyd on any level is not only completely lacking in any sort of historical perspective, they're also musically clueless.

Seriously, the only way someone coud mention them alongside Zeppelin or Flyd would simply be as part of a list of their favorite bands. That's it. Otherwise, they don't merit another mention, in any regard.
Anyone who likes Zeppelin and/or Floyd (and hasn't convinced themselves that great music stopped being made 30+ years ago) might actually find a lot to like in BtS.
Such as? Would it be the horrible, nonmusical vocals? The awful guitar solos? The thin, lifeless tone?

What? Tell me something about them that is remarkable, much less on a level with a Zeppelin or Floyd.
I don't think BSmack was placing them on the same iconic pedestal as LZ or PF, but you could certainly trace their roots/influences back to those bands.
Hardly. Their stated influences are a million miles away from bands like Zep and Floyd. They're all indie rock bands that don't possess a scintilla of the musical talent or ambition of Zep/Floyd.
It's far less ludicrous than comparing BtS to tripe like the Go-Gos and Neil Diamond.
They're just as far removed from Zep as they are from Neil Diamond.
Rule of thumb: whenever you accidentally find yourself in agreement with brad, it's time to reevaluate your position...
Not this time. Broken clock, and all that. He's merely arguing that water is wet. Hard to fault him for that, at least where the Zep/Floyd vs BtS comparisons are concerned.

And in regards to B Smack's speculation that I require music to be note-perfect and dead-nuts precise before I'll like it, well, that's absurd. First and foremost I'm into blues, a genre that doesn't exactly demand precise, be-bop levels of consistent perfection. Page was hardly Mister Note Perfect, and for the most part I always loved his playing.

What I do require, though, is passion. Listening to BtS, I hear snarky, sneering affectation, not real musical passion. I hear music that comes from the cynical brain, from the front of a doodled-on PeeChee folder, not from an enflamed heart.

I don't subscribe to the indie music fan's whine that technically advanced music lacks passion, which is their usual lament. It's not simple math, which is their oft-stated claim. Nonsense. In order to create such things, a lifetime of passion went into it. In order to execute those same things, blood and sweat are poured into every note. Those things don't just happen.
