This is true.

Genesis 1 is very clearly written such that the reader gets the information that the 6 days are literal.
And up until about 200 years ago nobody would ever dream that it means something other than that.
Only when people began trying to reconcile Scripture with what science was saying did they start imagining ways to have Genesis 1 say something other than what is straight-forwardly presented.

I've studied many various alternative theories about the language of Genesis 1 - trying to have it match with what science is now saying - and I don't find any of them compelling at all.

Except for the gap theory - and there are different variations of this theory.

I think a compelling case can be made that there were activities going on on earth involving satan (and perhaps other living things or spirits) between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2 - which may have gone on for a very long time.
