3: tie between the late Derrick Shepard and All-American DB Darrol Ray--had some good seasons for the Jets in the early 80's, 98 yard INT return in the playoffs against the Bengals.

Jsc, you forgot your other 27 teams.

My standard is what they did at ND. Montana fought for the starting spot because of the coach, not his talent. He had the NC and numerous come from behind wins.

Mirer is a tough one for me. He QB'd two of the most talented college football teams I've ever seen and did nothing with either.

Powlus takes way too much shit from everyone. Battle would have been a stud with Lou. Walker was solid.

Wasn't Harry O #3?

Killian,

Agree with you on Powlus and Battle. Battle also made an unselfish position switch, albeit one which benefitted him greatly in the long run.

Harry O was #3. Surprisingly, his numbers his senior year were a little weak. But he'll have a spot in ND lore forever due to his kick against Michigan in '80.

Another guy who could have been a great #3, under slightly different circumstances, was Alonzo Jefferson. Unfortunately for him, he was buried behind Allen Pinkett on the depth chart at the time.

HM: and shout out to Jarrail Jackson--if only overcoming his coach one time in the 96 RRS (or whatever corporate sponsor name it had then).

2 - Tom Clements. QB on '73 national championship team.

I probably won 't be around tomorrow. I have to visit a client at prison, about 2 hours away, in the morning. And since next week is back-to-school for my son, I promised him I'd take the afternoon off to take him to a pool party. So I'll let Killian do the honors for #1. I suspect there won't be any disagreement between him and me on that choice.

Btw, let me be the first to suggest that this thread head to the archives. Not that I consider it authoritative, but there's a good cross-section of schools represented, and it does a lot to illuminate the thinking of the fans of these teams.

Thanks for the reminder. If ol Ryno puts a little more air under that ball WSU goes up 14-0 and Michigan doesn't catch 'em. The bad news for you is that since that didn't happen LLoyd Carr's still got that National Championship goodwill keeping him in Ann Arbor.

Note the descriptive term - Reserve Safety....suggests that a reserve might not be the best....

Are you related to that cheerleader??????
