Fixed for ya.

I should have known you were a soulless "Rich get richer" capitalist.
So the DOW was up 683 points today, NASDAQ 464 and the S&P 120.

Like I said, it was a buying opportunity. Contrary to your assumption, I wasn't doing any buying, but some people were making a lot of money on this. That's how it works, and as much as you may not like it, it's how it has worked for decades, not an innovation of the Biden Administration. Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, JD Vance, and a lot of your "conservative" heroes are all in this game. Personally, I prefer to hold high quality investments in my retirement accounts and not play the market like a casino.

I expect another sharp DOWN day in the markets either on Friday or Monday.

I don't believe we are at the bottom of this down trend, and in fact, I expect the markets to be "choppy," and ultimately trend downward all the way through the election, at least. Maybe longer.

Jmo.

"Choppy" for the next four months? That would be very unusual. Depends of course on your definition of "choppy." It's pretty rare to have a long run of only up days or only down days. That's how it works.

This is the Dow Jones average for the past four years. The whole thing looks pretty choppy to me. Notice that the past few days are barely a blip on the big picture.

Consumers are paying more for basically EVERYTHING under Biden/Harris. Seems Dems are good with that.

Good to know that all my Dem friends are doing so well that they don’t mind paying extra to live.

I’m certainly not an economist. I don’t know, nor am I particularly interested in, how all that shit works. What I do know is that Biden/Harris managed to boost the price of everything in no time after taking over in DC. Housing, gas, groceries all up. The things that we all require (except for Screwy) cost much more.

A little extra isn't going to hurt you if you're doing well.

Maybe the Red/Trump States need to vote liberal. Seems like the Blue/liberal states are doing much better economically. Give it a shot if you want some extra money in your pocket.

Over the last year one out of four cars sold in California where electric. The others are probably Priuses or some type of hybrid. So gas isn't much of a problem here. Even though we pay the highest gas prices in the country.

We’re doing fine. But I am spending way more on gas because we each drive 20 miles to jobs in the capital.

I have no interest at all in buying electric vehicles. My buddy loves his F150 Lightning, but he’s going back to a gas truck within a year. He was more curious about the technology than anything else. Loves the power. It’s cool, but I want no part of contributing to poor kids working in mining jobs. Fuck EVs.

You obviously have no idea how economics work. The government pays for it just like it pays for Ukraine’s tanks and just like it forgives student loan debt.

Despite what you think, this money doesn’t come from your pocket, the government prints more dollars as it needs. It’s free. Doesn’t affect you at all, stop crying. It’s a damn school lunch, not a brand new electric car. Give it a break. Jeesh.

There’s always potential bad news, of one kind or another, on the horizon. If you let that stop you, you’ll never accomplish anything. “Long the market” is a pretty simplistic description. The only way to not be “long the market” would be to convert all of your net worth to cash and stuff in a mattress. That would be monumentally stupid. HPG will accuse me of being elitist or something but that’s just naive. I’ve been saving for retirement for years, constantly living below my potential means, so that I won’t have to live solely on SS, and sell my house and move to bumfuck, MO, and also to have something to leave my kids. The answer is to maintain a balanced portfolio and, if investing in individual companies, choose only high quality. I’m not a gambler looking to make a killing but I do know that the market always goes up, in the long run. Selling and running away during a downturn is tempting, but just about the dumbest thing you can do.

There are a lot of deflationary pressures in the economy now.

If you are UP a lot from the markets rising all this year, good.
I would cash out now and take your profits.
Don't get greedy, because upside is limited, compared to downside risk.

Not financial advice.
it is just my opinion.

Brah, I have some reasons to concur with your feeling that there is an impending DOOM; tho' the financial angle is a moot one since the survival rate vis-a-vis the proceedings approaches nil, statistically.

Like I implied before, a balanced portfolio made up of a combination of equities (small cap, large cap, tech, dividend producing...), bonds, cash, etc., appropriate to your age, income, and aversion to risk will pretty much protect you from even large market swings over the long term. This is what "target date" funds that most 401K plans attempt to do. Trying to time the market in any way is a fool's errand. There are few, if any, market "experts" who outperform the S&P 500 or other broad based indexes over the long term. Your returns during an up market won't match the market, but neither will your losses during a down market.

Dollar cost averaging (i.e. putting the same amount away with each paycheck, no matter if the markets are up or down) is part of this strategy. The biggest risk that a lot of us "older" people have comes from what they call "sequence of returns." If you retire during a down market and have to start drawing on your savings, you end up selling equities when their value is low and end up missing out on the rebound, which inevitably happens. That's why you need to set aside some cash early on so you can avoid that pitfall.

The S&P lost about 30% in early 2020 and a lot of people panicked. But it's up about 150% since then.
