Meanwhile, some stupid kids with parents who were on crack when it came time to fill out the birth certificates went out and fell into a frozen pond and drowned.

I remember a special on tv about a little adopted chinese girl who asphyxiated because the tie of her hood became caught in a crack of a playground swing, so there she was, in the slide, and nobody could see her -- one of those big plastic tub jobs, and the teacher who was supposed to be looking out at the kids didn't notice she wasn't on the playground, and was on the otherside of where she could have seen something if not for the sides of the slide anyway.

and the little girl died.

so her american mom lobbied for the type of ties that caused her little girl's death not to ever be used in children's clothing again, and she won. and her american mom also brought her chinese mom to america to visit their little girl's grave.

The nightmare for the parents and family is that these children died so young and that maybe they should have been under some adult supervision that would have kept them from venturing onto the thin ice.

Michael C. Anderson (if I'm remembering his last name correctly) died
in a horrible way, but also in a fascinating way. Not everyone gets to
see Earth as she really is.

I wouldn't have known Quadrevion Henning and Purvis Parker existed
if not for Sudden Sam and .net. But someone needed to search for
2 little black boys. Young men don't get any attention at all when
they're missing, then add race? so for those two to have national
attention is a FIRST among FIRSTS.

I am interchangeable, and my life is utterly meaningless, in the big picture. But that can be said for 99% of the 6.5 billion already here,

Here's one: People who spend their entire lives on the internet living vicariously through the lives of others never do jack. So, in order to go apply any real lessons learned, hey, how's 'bout you throw away your computer, leave your cave for good, quit your job and go make an attempt at truly living what remains of your so far thoroughly wasted life.

And you yourself say that chaperoning depends on the activity.
Perhaps their parents and (grandparents) thought that these
two boys could take care of themselves, they'd always gone
to play basketball and come back home. They'd proven
themselves trustworthy enough to get home, and get back. This
probably wasn't the first time this winter they'd gone off by
themselves to the park.

And it's one less load off one's mind to be able to trust your kid,
instead of going 'psycho micro management parent' and still
ending up trusting your kid less and less in the process.

I guess. So they fell through. And now they're gone.

I remember how we weren't supposed to play on the ice, too. Except
we didn't live near lakes. We had one tiny little creek that was filled
with tadpoles and minnow type fish, and it made a lot of noise when
the water hit the big rocks inside the actual creek bed. But you could
walk in it with your feet and only get wet up to your ankles or so, if that.
Just tiny. And there was always skating down the iced up ditches in front of every yard (though that REALLY sucked when the ice broke through)
in sneakers. But me personally, I always thought the white folks in
town who lived near Eagle Creek and could go there all the time, and
out in the country, when driving down some of those roads in Indiana,
were crazy for playing hockey and other shit on top of frozen ponds.
Especially when the weather couldn't be trusted.

Omen II made a very, very big impact on me, when it came to trusting ice.

White folks were crazy. But boys will be boys. And sometimes what
looks safe, isn't. And the one time you ended up with just your shoes
and socks soaking... you might not come back at all.

This time, they didn't come back.

Drowning is frightening. At least, I think it is.


We never went through all that fishing safety shit, though I did learn what
to do if the barbed hook got in the skin. Through a book. None of us
tried to imitate fly fishers, especially not in crowded areas. Just take our
little bamboo poles, and a bucket of minnows (or worms), and hope that
the little white-and-multi-colored bobbers floating towards the middle end
of your line was yanked down.

Other than that, it was just watch what the adults do. And we never fished by ourselves.

There were no guns in our household. My grandfather had a WW2 rifle under his bed. It was never to be touched under any circumstances.
As far as I know, it wasn't. It wasn't like we were ever left alone to allow
us to do so anyway. But we didn't do the gun safety thing. It was more
of a 'you will get your ass beat if you lay a finger on that gun'. A
mythical thing, a respect thing.

But not everybody is like that. And I don't know of what secret attempts
to see 'grandpa's world world 2 gun' anyone else could have made while i was no there.


Maybe their parents should have driven them there, watched them as they played, and driven them back home. Maybe. Maybe that's a good idea, and maybe you're right .. parker's grandparents, and henning's parents, were negligent.

But you can't watch them all the time. The boys earned trust at some point. They probably fucked up... unless something else occured we'll
never know about.

They had proven their trust before.

Now they're gone. They were only boys.

That would depend on the activity. They "let me out on my own" when they were confident that I understood the dangers and that I could successfully navigate the task at hand. Driving a tractor? Very dangerous if you haven't been taught how to handle yourself in a variety of problematic situations that could arise. Fishing? Only after learning the dangers of going into the pond. Hunting? Only after going through my father's version of gun safety and hunting safety. This was not only for our own protection but also for the protection of the livestock that city folks sometimes shoot instead of deer. Ice fishing? Never tried it, never will. My father taught me to stay away from the ice on ponds/lakes and taught me a healthy fear of what could happen. These two kids obviously never learned the dangers of going out on thin ice and, in their case, curiosity killed the cat. THAT is on the parents/adult family members who should have foreseen the potential dangers of "going to the park". Maybe they had tried to teach them but, if so, they were unsuccessful.

At any rate, it's a tragedy and it's not necessary to place blame....on parents or some mysterious monster.
