Who was the last Pac 10 team to win a MNC before USC?

Was it U dub back in the early 90's?

Didn't they get nailed for violations as well.

I guess there is only one way the PAC 10 can compete.

Washington's problems were all booster related, they were handing out trucks and free homes for football players to live in if they'd go to school there. None of the Bush stuff is related to USC, just shady San Diego people upset that he didnt sign with them and are now trying to smear his name.
The Jarrett thing is a joke, the kid pays 650 a month for room in an apartment, at any other school in the nation, his 650 a month is no big deal, suddenly at USC its supposed to be a violation? The Sanchez thing we'll have to wait to see how it plays out, at first the girl said she was assaulted between 12 and 12 30, when security video showed that Sanchez was in a bar til after 1 am and she wasnt anywhere to be seen, she changed her story.

It is related to USC because the first contact happened while Bush was playing for USC.

As for Sanchez, I wonder if this blows over, if he will be punished for being in a bar underage? Probably not because according to Rey Rey, they own the police.

SoCal,

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2428059
Carroll: 'We needed to see this coming'

LOS ANGELES -- In the midst of multiple investigations of the USC football program, coach Pete Carroll told the Los Angeles Times that the program needs to work harder to control outside influences on its players.

"We needed to see this coming, and we didn't," Carroll was quoted saying in a column about the recent spate of trouble facing some of the team's current and former players. "It's gone beyond all the heads up, all the alerts, all the education we give these kids. We need to do more."

In the past week, questions have been raised about housing arrangements for the family of Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush, taken No. 2 overall by the New Orleans Saints in this weekend's NFL draft, and about whether an upscale apartment that wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett shared with former teammate Matt Leinart violated NCAA rules. Also, the unversity has indefinitely suspended backup quarterback Mark Sanchez, who is under investigation on allegations he sexually assualted a female student.

Speaking generally about the recent problems, Carroll told the Times he needs to better educate his players about outside influences, especially now that USC has become a college football powerhouse -- and a target.

"Our guys are marked guys, they have had success and there's people trying to get in on that, and we need to do a better job of making them understand the problems there," he told the Times. "We have moved into very different territory now, all the hype, all the distractions, all the people who want to influence us, and we will be more aware of that. We will work harder to control that."

Leinart's father, Bob, put the duo on the lease at the secured apartment complex downtown after Leinart moved out of his former residence near campus because he was constantly hounded by fans.

Leinart -- the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback picked 10th by the Arizona Cardinals in Saturday's NFL draft -- and Jarrett each paid $650 a month for the apartment that cost $3,866 a month, according to the Times. Leinart's father paid the difference and said he's been told Jarrett might have to repay him about $10,000, the newspaper reported.

University compliance officials are looking into whether the football program received an unfair advantage. While Bob Leinart would have been allowed to make up the difference for his son, he might not have been allowed to do so for another player.

Tim Tessalone, USC's director of sports information, confirmed Sunday that an investigation involving Jarrett's living arrangement was under way.

"At this point, we're still gathering information," Tessalone told The Associated Press, declining further comment.

Meanwhile, the Pacific-10 Conference is looking into the living arrangement of Bush's family, who lived in a house owned by a man who reportedly sought to market him while he played for USC last season. NCAA rules prohibit student-athletes and their families from receiving extra benefits from agents or their representatives.
Quit saying USC "had nothing to do with these allegations". See the bold part. USC needs to control these issues. Yes, it is hard to control, but it is the burden of the institution to control outside influences on their student-athletes. If they cannot control it, they will pay for it.

I dont see how you can expect an institution to babysit a stepfather hundreds of miles away.
This isnt a school and/or its boosters throwing money and schwag at a kid so that he will go to and play for that school. this is some shady people throwing money at a kids gravy training step fatrher so that the kid will leave school and go to the pros

It's the reason they pay compliance officers.

SoCal,

LA to SD isn't "hundreds" of miles. Mapquest says it is 130. If you think Bush had NO IDEA that his family had moved to a different house for almost a year and his parents were getting about $100,000 cash over almost a 2 year period, you are kidding yourself.

I swear, Cowherd was saying yesterday how NFL Fans are adults and CFB Fans are children. He said NFL Fans can take off the blinders and can admit when they stink. He said CFB fans are usually in denial when anything at all is said about their cherished University or athletic program. When he said that while riding in my car, I immediately thought of you and how you've handled this Bush thing. You are the epitomy of the policeman giving the "nothing to see here" while standing in front of a burning building.

Here's your new avatar.

just pointing out that this isnt the same type of school/booster based infractions that schools like Alabama are responsible of.
This cost USC Reggie Bush for another year, the guy giving his step father the money was giving him the money to leave USC, not go to USC.
Do athletic programs make enough money to hire a bunch of people as compliance officers to look in to every move a student athletes family may make, even if that family is nowhere close to the school itsself

Im not saying that there was no wrong doing in this matter, just that there was no wrong doing by anyone who represents USC

Buddy of mine played football at SMU in the late 80's he used to go to these alumni parties and shake hands with the alumni. He said that was the highlight. Some nights if he got an interception he would take in over 5k. Reggie Dupard (I think thats who the runningback was) would take in 5k weekly.

I don't think you understand. The person who gives the money doesn't have to be a representative of the school. It's the person who takes the money. Step father or not, if anyone from the Bush family accepts money from an individual, and that money has to do with Reggie, it puts Reggie, and USC, directly in the cross hairs.

I don't understand how they can make that rule and then turn around and say that its okay for teams that go to bowl games to allow the sponsors to shower the same athletes with sometimes thousands of dollars worth of gifts. If you think about it there are a lot of people that put on a football game but only the players get the booty.

I agree. It's a bigger double standard than those that exist in Trixie's world.

Their explanation? FedEx, AT&T, Tostitos, Nokia, etc. have no interest as to if or where these kids go in the NFL.

When you think about it, why does Tommy Zbikowski get to be on the undercard at Madison Square Garden, get paid for it, and that not be an NCAA violation? I'm sure there are plenty of amature boxers with as good or better records than Tommy, but he's the one on the undercard.

Believe the Heupel wrote:That actually should be an NCAA violation, just as Jeremy Bloom's endorsement deals were-in fact, moreso. At least with Bloom the argument could be made that his endorsement deals truly were not influenced by his football notoriety. With Zbikowski, it's completely a question of not how well the bear dances but that he does at all.
To a point, yes. But this falls more in line with baseball players than with the Bloom situation. Zbikowski isn't taking any endorsement money, just the purse for the fight. And it's also not like Zibby is a tomato can. He is a golden gloves boxer, has something like a 73-11 amature record, and was likely going to box if football didn't work out for him.

Did he get this chance because he is Tom Zbikowski? Likely not. Did he get it because he is Tom Zbikowski, starting free safety for Notre Dame? Probably. But then again, most of these kids summer jobs are directly a result of them being Jimmy Joe Bob, football player, State U.

Yeah, I didn't know he boxed until that game. :meds:

But in a few years, on whatever incarnation of this board we are on, people will get piled on when Brent decides to hang them up.

Crown,

Do you not even know the story? Leinart living there with his dad paying for it wasn't the issue. His dad can give him $1,000,000 to play for USC and it would not be a violation. It's the fact Jarrett was only paying $650/month to live in what is about $4000/month rental rate for the apartment.

I know the fucking story asshole. I just dont see it as being much of a problem. He was paying rent wasnt he??? If Leinart was ok w/ paying more, whats the big deal?

Listen board bitch. Student-athletes are not allowed to receive special benefits such as money, transportation or housing not at market value. No, this isn’t as big a violation as the Bush thing, but if it is proved that Jarrett was paying $650 when market value was ~ $2000 for half the rent, it is a violation.
