Nice scrollwheel JCT-it worked so well that you responded to 2 of Trev's posts.

First, you post an only slightly less ambivalent take than mine viz. your rooting interest in the NBA. Then you turn around and say that the NBA is the only major professional sport that still keeps you rooting hard. :?:
:?:

Where's the confusion?

I still find myself rooting fairly actively on NBA games and I find myself now being a fan of the Kings, pretty much by default.

College hoops: Ruined for me these days. I guess if I had to pick I root for Louisville and North Carolina.

. . .

That being said though, even college football is also hurtling headlong towards irrelevancy for me, just like college hoops has, and for the same reason: too many underclassmen leaving early is diluting the sport and ruining rivalries. There's less and less continuity now and with so many more key underclassmen leaving early these days the key re-match games either don't come off at all or, if they do, they've lost most of their luster...
We've had this discussion before, but although we agree about what happened, we disagree as to what was ruined. For me, it was the NBA.
We don't disagree there. I agree that the NBA is definitely being hurt too. It's just not getting hurt nearly as badly as college hoops, which is now nearly ruined for me.
Part of the beauty of the old-school NBA was that it was the easiest sport to follow. You only have 12 players to a team, and most of the guys on the roster had a built-in fan following before they even got to the league. Those days are long over, what with the NBA's obsession with high schoolers, Euros and guys who had only one year in college (the latter group being the only ones I heard of).
Watered down talent levels, definitely. The NBA, absolutely, but even moreso the college game.
20 years ago, I could probably name from memory 90% of the players on NBA rosters. Today, I probably couldn't name more than three players on any one team.
Nor would anyone particualrly want to, these days.

:P
College basketball will always be relevant to me, even if the talent level is slightly diluted, because of the rivalries and the fan followings the teams have, which are far more rabid than anything the NBA ever has seen or will see. I think Dick Vitale is generally an idiot, but he's got one point right: the college game is about the name on the front of the jerseys, and the NBA game is about the name on the back of the jerseys. And when I, as a fan, don't even recognize most of those names on the back anymore, it's time for me to go.
That's all true, which is why college football is still #1 for me. College football just hasn't had the chance to see its game decimated by early defections yet, at least not to anywhere near the same degree as college hoops. College hoops is now a mere shadow of its former self. All you really root for now with college hoops is the laundry. It used to be the laundry plus the familiar players wearing the laundry, including star players who stayed through their senior seasons in order to right some wrongs or to defend what they earned...

These days, if you're the very best, it's one and done...if that.

Matt Leinart would be one glaring exception, and look how it cost him. He'll be the last guy in that position to ever make that same decision and like you said, both the pros and the college game will continue to suffer for it...

NHL: Edmonton
NFL: Seahawks (we alway got their feeds growing up)
MLB: Toronto
NBA: Really don't care, Grew up cheering for Portland. Then it was Toronto when they got a team but now it's whoever Nash plays for
CFL: Edmonton Eskimos
College Football: Don't have one, I usually cheer for the underdogs
College Basketball: Gonzaga
CIS College Sports: University of alberta

I had a heart breaking year this year with the Oilers and Seahawks getting eliminated in the finals and the Suns losing in the semi's... Fuck, Fuck, Fuck. At least the Eskimo's won the grey cup (but their are only 9 teams) and the U of A always dominates.
