Over 1,000,000 homes and businesses have lost power in cali in the last 3-4 days.
This is just the beginning for you California cocksuckers who bring your inflated real estate prices , and you earring wearing BMW driving tailgating faggots. Brown out ??? it ain't no fucking brown out... we cut your asses off.

Until all that hot bubbling shit at Hanford and environs melts and kills the Columbia River and all downstrestream,
Not to worry... we built them fucking dams, and we can damn sure build an intake pipe and send that flourescent water straight down to Cali for a price. Those stupid fucks would not know the taste of radioactive water from that shit that comes out of their taps anyway. Then we just put our intake above Hanford and we're good to go.

Bastards. Came straight out of a news article(which I found on Netscape, while there for other stuff, since that isn't my first choice for news), which when I went to C&P, had been edited with different numbers. Bastards. Now, it just says "tens of thousands."
Roach wrote:Until all that hot bubbling shit at Hanford and environs melts and kills the Columbia River and all downstrestream, not to mention the Pacific Ocean.
Your tax dollars at work, bro. They're spending billions of dollars over the next couple of decades cleaning that shit up. Not sure what they're doing with the nasty goo...sending it to Utah, or Nevada, or some such other shithole(like Eastern Washington isn't a shithole in and of itself).
Here in Utah we got the worst of the worst bio weapons just 60 miles out of town. And we're down wind. And the gov says "no worries..."

Here in Oregon, we house a good chunk (I think it's about 20% or somewhere in there....I think Alabama has it the worst) of the chemical weapons arsenal. Matter of fact, it's right downstream from Hanford. And it's upwind for about half the year.

No worries. Nevermind that every animal that comes within a stone's throw of the places dies...Uncle Sam says it's cool...the watchdog groups sure say otherwise, though.

Reason # 1-buhzillion why I try and avoid the Lower Columbia Valley.

Are you serious? About living off the grid, I mean. I know you're serious about the second part of your statement.

Do you have a PV system? If so, how large? How much battery storage do you have? What kinds of things do you do to minimize your electric usage?

Do you have solar hot water?

Hmmm....let's see....should the president create a public works/grant program during a recession that would erect solar preheaters across the country to lessen energy demand...or, should he instead take that money and give it to THE MOST PROFITABLE BUSINESSES IN HUMAN HISTORY, as incentive to monopolize alternative energy sources in the future?

Hmmm....tough call.

Wait, it's now "unpatriotic" and borderline illegal to hold an elected official accountable for their actions, so let's just go with the latter.

Link to where I've claimed to be either conservative or liberal, or even moderate?

I'll save you some trouble -- there isn't one.

Instead, I tend to....I know this is over your head mv, but play along...I actually think for myself, and base my opinions on the greater good, for the most part. I'm guided by my sense of right-and-wrong, rather than a my wallet, a party line, and certainly not some stupid "I'm conservative, so I have to think this way."

You should try it some day.

Dude...the government gave the oil companies hundreds of millions of dollars, in the name of "alternative energy." A large consumption of power could be greatly reduced with an "alternative energy" source that's already on top of everyone's roof. The act was motivated by corruption, not any quest for alternative energy.

And btw-mvsdouche....how would me funding such a program qualify as a "PUBLIC WORKS" project? You might want to google that phrase on up.

mvscal wrote:I don't see that the government should be offering any subsidies be it private or commercial.
Now THAT'S conservative. And while I think it's pie-in-the-sky in this modern age, I really can't fault your thinking behind it. While I may disagree(based only upon the current fiscal climate, not in principle), I respect the viewpoint, and applaud you if you truly apply it consistantly.

Fair enough.

Solar power is not an "alternative energy" source. It is a supplemental technology at best.

Regardless how much of total demand could be filled by solar power, it IS an alternative to petroleum.

But agreed, there's going to have to be a serious technological breakthrough for solar to be viable on any large scale, and the number of joules of energy hitting a given area is what it is.

BUT...a water heater uses electricity, which often comes from petroleum. Any reduction in this is a good thing.

And those solar towers show some promise, but once again, there needs to be a technological breakthrough for them to become a particularly feasable option.
Practical alternative energy sources are tar sands, coal liquefaction and oil shale development and, like it or not, oil companies are the ones best suited to developing and exploiting those resources.
I disagree that they're "practical." They're still just limited fossil fuels. Dead-end. And oil companies definitely are better suited to develope them...when the government takes our tax dollars to help them do it, so they can profit from the people who paid for the research in the first place...but I know I'm preaching to the chior here, in light of your first statements.

Who says this has to be a "PUBLIC WORKS" project? You?
No, not at all. But, Bush's "alternative energy" subsidies are little more than a public works project, only very few members of the "public" benefit...most suffer from it. My rationale was that if the money is to be spent, it should be spent on something that provides immediate benefit, while boosting the economy at the same time.

I can't really bash someone for saying that the money should be spent on either, though. Valid stance-imo, whether I agree or not.
Trying googling the phrase 'private enterprise', dumbfuck.

I'm familiar with it. My beef is when public monies are used strictly so private enterprise can profit. Also, add in the idea that these private enterprises are profiting from public lands, and it becomes clouded. In their present form, projects such as these don't necessarily cater to the "greater good" -imo. Tricky situation, regardless.

Electricity crisis? Build more nuclear plants.

SCAM SCAM SCAM.

Do some research, and see if you don't change your mind. Nuclear generated electricity is good...for oil companies. The idea is to reduce petroleum consumption, not lock it in for generations.
You do realise that these companies lease the land they use, don't you?

Except for the part, like the timber industry, they figure out ways to not pay, cheating you and I.

Humorous thread.

I am sure Dins is well aware of the billions of dollars California is putting into Solar power. Just Google "California Solar Power Initiative". I am sure Dins is equally aware that Cali leads the country in wind and geothermal generation. I am sure Dins is well aware that Cali is a national leader in renewable generation.

Of course he knows that.

Hot water is now gas so I'm not off grid for that or stove. PV takes up the space where old SP's were. Batteries are in a closet and will last about 36 hours of normal use. Grid is still hooked up if needed but have not used it in the 2+ years since the PV was put in. I save E in lots of ways. Added windows and a trom wall on the south face. Don't have a dryer or a blender... Use a laptop that charges during the day. Not too easy but I'm not home much so it works for me. Oh and the apt on the property is on grid so if PV fucks up and grid is still working I can use it. Cost a bundle but will pay for itself in next few years.

Any other questions?

Actually, Texas now leads the country in wind generation (as much as I hate to admit it). But CA is a close second.

I know most PV systems are actually not disconnected from the grid and if the power goes out then your lights go out. I assume you have the other (less common) system where the PV directly powers the home.

it depends, of course, on what your definition of the word "is is.

Wikipedia: Wind Farm
The U.S. has several of the largest wind farms in the world. Three of the largest, Altamont Pass, San Gorgonio Pass and Tehachapi Pass, are located in California. The largest U.S. wind farm is the Stateline Wind Project on the Oregon-Washington line, with a peak capacity of 300 megawatts of electricity (although the three California wind farms mentioned are larger, they are actually collections of dozens of individual wind farms).

[incredibly minor nitpick]Edison is not building the Stirling Genreators. They have a long-term contract to take energy from the project. They are being built by a company called Stirling Energy Systems, Inc..[/nitpick]
