No one ever told Clarett no

No athlete squandered his physical gifts more than Maurice Clarett, the former Ohio State running back and one-time Heisman Trophy candidate - unlucky No. 13 - who could have new felony charges stemming from Wednesday's early morning police chase in Columbus tacked onto earlier aggravated robbery and robbery charges in the same city where he once starred for the Buckeyes.

Clarett's greatest attribute is also his greatest flaw.

His ability to carry a football is the primary reason why his life is now a royal mess.

Four years ago, at 18, he was too immature to enter Ohio State right out of high school and just in time for spring practice, but too talented to not crack the starting lineup.

All the attention went straight to Clarett's head. He couldn't distinguish between the fantasy of his football fame and the reality of needing to maintain a healthy balance between football and his personal and academic lives.

Unfortunately, in football-mad Columbus, Clarett had the uncanny ability to make people forget that just because he was a football star didn't guarantee he would be a success off the field.

Without question, Clarett's performance in Ohio State's 2002 Fiesta Bowl win over Miami for the national championship was as good as it got.

He never played another down for the Buckeyes. Without football, his life spiraled out of control and met with dizzying results.

As Clarett sits in jail on a $6.1 million bond awaiting his first trial on Monday for allegedly robbing two people in an alley behind a Columbus bar on New Year's Day, he must face the realization that all the blame rests with the face he sees in the mirror.

It is a hard-looking face, filled with worry, anger, sorrow and confusion.

Clarett appears much older than his 22 years. And considering he was in possession of four loaded guns and wearing a bullet-proof vest when apprehended by police who used Mace to subdue him (stun guns couldn't penetrate his vest) and spikes to flatten his vehicle's front tires, it's not a stretch to wonder if he will live to see 25.

Clarett once accused Ohio State coach Jim Tressel of turning against him, but playing the blame game was Clarett's only defense mechanism.

Blame Tressel. Blame former Ohio State athletic director Andy Geiger. Blame the NCAA. Blame the courts for denying him the opportunity to play in the NFL until after his junior season. Blame the Denver Broncos for releasing him. Blame everybody but Maurice.

Clarett's biggest problem was that nobody ever told him no - until it was too late.

In hindsight, Tressel should have punished Clarett in no uncertain and very public terms when Clarett dressed down an assistant coach on the sideline during a game.

Clarett was made to feel he could get away with just about anything, as long as he produced on the field.

Clarett needed tough love from Tressel. Instead, he got 25 carries a game.

That doesn't excuse Clarett's behavior. It only goes to show he was unable to determine right from wrong without the firm hand of an adult.

Clarett's troubles run far deeper than his slow time in the 40. It's too late for him to salvage his football career. He's now in a fight to save his life.
