The only breweries that seem to be able to pull that off are ones who use long-duration bottle-conditioning(I have no idea how these Floyd folks do it). As a very general rule, if something comes out of a keg that hot, it's probably got the "winey-nast"(although nothing's carved in stone).

The problem there is that to "cook down" something that hot and ferment all the residual sugars out, it requires yeasts that leave the winey aftertastes.

Whatever the nearly-barleywine brew Stone has these days is pretty good about hiding it. Hair Of Dog here in Portland are the masters, but that's some seriously well-aged, highly-handcrafted stuff, which isn't the most widely distributed stuff going, and the price reflects the drawn-out brewing process.

Deschutes used to be masters of keeping the winey down in hot brews...10-15 years ago. Then they jumped on the "the lower the ABV, the more we sell" wagon(sup McMenamins), so it's a mott point these days


While those high ABV brews look flashy on paper, I'd rather just drink two lower-test brews, and spare myself the nasty aftertaste and mouthfeel that comes with those yeasts...and the nasty case of the poo that they tend to produce. Keep the sugars down, and you don't need bionic yeast to eat it up, and you don't end up with residual sugars that create some undesirable aftereffects...despite the "glamor" of sporting those gaudy ABV numbers. It's tough to go past about 6-6.5% without jacking up the yeast, and getting the undesirable undertones.


I can get drunk with a quickness without going the barleywine route.

Just checked the current selections of my local beer market. They have over 800 different bottled beers in stock, but nothing from Three Floyds. Name rings a bell, though. I'll keep an eye out. The other local beer market doesn't have a full list available online, but it's right up the street, so I'll stop in there one of these days.

I only had the Dreadnaught once, at the beer festival, and I did not notice any nasty aftertaste. I had someone else’s high ABV and poured that shit out, so I think I recognize what you’re talking about. Three Floyds Alpha King is 6% ABV, and is excellent. It is also an American Pale Ale, not an IPA. My bad.

Indy, if they stock Three Floyds pick up one six-pack each of Alpha King and Dreadnaught. Drink the Alpha King (you’ll love it) and send me the Dreadnaught. I’ll make sure it doesn’t have that nasty aftertaste, and report back.

I try to be more openminded and less of a homer in my old age.

But remember, I live in a city that the mayor got onboard with the industry, and gave the official nod to the nickname Beertown(even though it had always been referred to as Beervana throughout the world).

I started sucking down the finest micros since before I was legal drinking age. I've worked at micro festivals for years, I've rubbed elbows with some of the biggest names in the industry...


So basically, I'm about the most spoiled beersnob you could possibly imagine. The stars lined up just right to bless this child, and the three Wise Men...McMenamin, Ponzi, and Saxer lavished me with gifts from a young age.


But...the rest of the country is slowly catching up, and the next stage of this evolution seems to be appreciating what different regions can bring to the table(which usuallly ain't much).

Bocks are my favorites type of beer and I like teh local stuff like Zeigen Bock and Shiner down here in Tejas.

Ok, here's the verdict.

I love hoppy beers. India Pale Ales are damn good, in my book. That being said, the Alpha King about knocked my socks off. Damn that was hoppy. I used to homebrew a lot and would always put an extra sock of hops in to steep after the cook to add more hoppiness, but this was over the top. Overall, I give Alpha King an A-. Just a tad too much hops. I know that's almost like giving a pizza a ding for too much cheese, but it can happen.

The Pride and Joy Medium Ale was actually just right for me. It still had a strong hoppiness to it, but it wasnot overpowering. The flavor was alost identical to the Alpha King mius the hops. A+ and I will continue to buy more.

I bought another sixer of a different kind. It is not on their website, but it was called Statue of St. something or another. I have not tried it yet.

I look forward to finding this one if I can for my wife. She loves hefe weizens.

You might also want to try Fester’s favorite microbrew, Summit Extra Pale. Not quite as hopped up as the Alpha. My local tavern now has it on tap. I will have to look for the Pride and Joy.

I probably will. Sierra Nevada IPA I have tried and liked. It's a Cali beer. It's a Northern Cali company, but I'm sure it is far enough from the U&L to not even be considered a Northwest IPA.

I've been drinking Celebration since many of you were in diapers(which isn't saying much, since most of you were potty-trained in the last 10 days). If memory is deece, it used to be a much higer ABV before they started exporting it to you lesser breeds.

I know it’s a seasonal, and I’m surprised there’s still some stock of it left here (at least there was last week), but it’s a fairly big store. I mentioned Celebration Ale in another beer thread back before Christmas, but keep puffing up your chest and telling yourself how clever you are. It’s really working nicely.
