That attitude is everything that's wrong with college sports. It's why Southern got the death penalty in spite of being so athletically gifted. Urban Meyer should never have put a mother into a position where she throws her own son out of her home, because its what Florida told her to do to force her son to sign with them.
If some man did that to your son, and to your wife, would you really see only dollar signs, endorsements, under the table transactions (shades of Reggie Bush?) and NATIONAL CHAMPION in lights?

He was a really big guy, and it turns out that he had gone to Iowa on a football scholarship ('sup, NOJ). He was quite a bit older than me, and IIRC the relevant time frame was the 1960's. Anyway, he blew out his knee and couldn't play football anymore. When that happened, Iowa pulled his football scholarship. Without the scholarship, he couldn't afford to attend college anymore, and he wound up in the Navy.
And Van used to relay the story -- on the other board -- about what happened to him at USC, regarding the baseball team, and his own scholarship.
A thousand stories, where I grew up, dealt with the student-athlete who was more valuable as an athlete than as a student. You didn't want to be the person who had that career ending injury who also had to be sent home because suddenly the bills piled up and you couldn't afford to remain in school even if you were basically academically on top of things. I am glad that that policy has changed. I wasn't aware that it had. I don't know why Killian referred to such policies as being a relic of the 50s, instead of how recent the change has actually been.

And don't give me that "poor exploited young athlete" bullshit. Most of these kids are getting a chance that wouldn't be given to them if they were not athletes. If they fuck it up, it's on them.
I know nothing about who is credible here and who is not credible here. I'm not up on who's popular and who is the goat of this board. No one has said anything about Urban Meyer NOT strong-arming a mother to get her to force her son to attend a particular school. T Rex comes in with 'National Champion'... like that excuses everything.
Myself, when I read something like that, the bullshit stinks to high heaven and I say there's no way that that arrangement was on the up and up. So a kid moving to a school to be closer to his father also has to be looked at more closely, to me. There's something more going on under the surface that all parties are covering up.
Dave Bliss tried to cover up a murder. Dave Bliss also wasn't a stranger to doing dirty shit in order to coerce students to going to UNM or Baylor in the first place. Dave Bliss wanted to take care of people's problems, for the sake of the athletic program and not their true health and post-academic career. His job was on the line if he didn't keep the right people 'happy'. It sounds like Urban is the exact same type of person, only he has a National Championship under his belt. None of it should be excused, Killian. But perhaps you can tell me, is Urban Meyer the type of person who wouldn't cross the line Dave Bliss did?
I think he's even worse, Killian. If you're behind mothers throwing their own sons out of one's home, you're capable of worse than Dave Bliss. In my opinion.
on a short leash, apparently.
