Rub some monistat on it, Adel. She'll be gone in no time; from this forum and from this board. What do you expect the "mods" to do, exactly? Delete every post? I've already got a full-time job.

Hi, Terry. Thank you for the correction within your post.

Killian, my own understanding of Notre Dame and its student-athletes is that one is not recruited for Notre Dame, no matter how skilled your arm or fast your feet or quick your reflexes, unless one is able to perform academically at Notre Dame. No one is going to enter Notre Dame unless they can succeed at Notre Dame as a normal student. Notre Dame does not give out degrees in basket-weaving... from what I had always understood. That was what made Notre Dame stand head and shoulders above the rest of college football. No matter how many championships or division titles or bowl wins other schools accrued, no one is able to say they look after their student-athletes academic career and post-academic life the way Notre Dame does.

That was the policy I was referring to. I live in New Mexico, whose university was recently ranked at the very bottom for student-athleticism and graduation rates of those student-athletes. New Mexico doesn't really care about its student athletes. New Mexico has been caught up in the rush to 'perform' athletically without also ensuring that athletes academic needs are taken care of beyond make-work courses. The little success it has brought New Mexico is not worth it, in my opinion. So I'm a little sensitive about such things. Then there's the tragedy of Dave Bliss post-UNM career. If I don't know what I'm talking about regarding student atheletes, take what I say from the heart anyway.

No one had measured up to Notre Dame, when I was living in Indiana. I haven't heard of anyone doing so currently. Have they? Who has?

That attitude is everything that's wrong with college sports. It's why Southern got the death penalty in spite of being so athletically gifted. Urban Meyer should never have put a mother into a position where she throws her own son out of her home, because its what Florida told her to do to force her son to sign with them.

If some man did that to your son, and to your wife, would you really see only dollar signs, endorsements, under the table transactions (shades of Reggie Bush?) and NATIONAL CHAMPION in lights?
Terry in Crapchester wrote: He was a really big guy, and it turns out that he had gone to Iowa on a football scholarship ('sup, NOJ). He was quite a bit older than me, and IIRC the relevant time frame was the 1960's. Anyway, he blew out his knee and couldn't play football anymore. When that happened, Iowa pulled his football scholarship. Without the scholarship, he couldn't afford to attend college anymore, and he wound up in the Navy.
And Van used to relay the story -- on the other board -- about what happened to him at USC, regarding the baseball team, and his own scholarship.

A thousand stories, where I grew up, dealt with the student-athlete who was more valuable as an athlete than as a student. You didn't want to be the person who had that career ending injury who also had to be sent home because suddenly the bills piled up and you couldn't afford to remain in school even if you were basically academically on top of things. I am glad that that policy has changed. I wasn't aware that it had. I don't know why Killian referred to such policies as being a relic of the 50s, instead of how recent the change has actually been.

Killian wrote:You are taking the least credible person on this board and his post as 100% gospel. Do a little research and learn things before you start comparing Urban Meyer to a guy that tried to cover up a fucking murder.

And don't give me that "poor exploited young athlete" bullshit. Most of these kids are getting a chance that wouldn't be given to them if they were not athletes. If they fuck it up, it's on them.
I know nothing about who is credible here and who is not credible here. I'm not up on who's popular and who is the goat of this board. No one has said anything about Urban Meyer NOT strong-arming a mother to get her to force her son to attend a particular school. T Rex comes in with 'National Champion'... like that excuses everything.

Myself, when I read something like that, the bullshit stinks to high heaven and I say there's no way that that arrangement was on the up and up. So a kid moving to a school to be closer to his father also has to be looked at more closely, to me. There's something more going on under the surface that all parties are covering up.

Dave Bliss tried to cover up a murder. Dave Bliss also wasn't a stranger to doing dirty shit in order to coerce students to going to UNM or Baylor in the first place. Dave Bliss wanted to take care of people's problems, for the sake of the athletic program and not their true health and post-academic career. His job was on the line if he didn't keep the right people 'happy'. It sounds like Urban is the exact same type of person, only he has a National Championship under his belt. None of it should be excused, Killian. But perhaps you can tell me, is Urban Meyer the type of person who wouldn't cross the line Dave Bliss did?

I think he's even worse, Killian. If you're behind mothers throwing their own sons out of one's home, you're capable of worse than Dave Bliss. In my opinion.

SoCalTrjn wrote:Aaron Corp will be a better QB than Claussen, and the kid UCLA got out of Edison is better than Crist, unless you rely on Lemming for your recruiting rankings
Of course Corp will be a better QB than Clausen. Which is why Carrol called Clausen the day after USC beat ND last year. It wasn't because Corp was a 3 star kid who was knocked up to a 5 star by Allen Wallace, who is a bigger Trojan homer than Lemming is an ND homer.

And Crissman is better than Crist, of course. He's the number 10 QB on Scout (to Crist's 5) and the number 7 QB on Rivals (to Crist's 4). Crist is a top 100 player on both services.

Risa,

As Terry pointed out, the difference with ND is that they help their players with their studies once they get in, and provide them with the chance to graduate.

And before you go and start comparing Meyer to a guy that covered up a murder, know the situation with the player (Wilson), family (mother in Fla and father in California) before you decide to open your fucking mouth. If you don't know the back story, shut the fuck up.

We're done comparing Meyer to Bliss.

Achtung! None of the German items in my collection depict Hitler. Since the majority of German Luftwaffe pilots were merely
soldiers, and not members of the Nazi Party (N.S.D.A.P.), they simply represent aviators who flew for their country during a time
of war. A great number of German pilots were outspoken against Hitler and many of his policies, and these items are kept as
historical artifacts reflecting their bravery as aviators.

Go ahead and do a google search for the article "Under the Tarnished Pen" that goes into detail about Looney and Yager, and the axe they had to grind with Holtz.

I'd be either extremely naive or a homer to think that doesn't go on at ND, and ND is by no means the worst offender in that area.
That is the pro of the student-athlete
Some of these kids come in at an academic disadvantage relative to many of their classmates, and they need a little extra help to make sure they don't fall through the cracks.
That is a con of student-athlete. But are you telling me that these athletes would not be able to find a tutor or help from the teacher or their coaches if they asked for it.

I know they had an agenda. But you have to take it for what it is worth.

ND isnt as great as risa is making it out to be. That is all I am trying to say.

Nor are they nearly as bad as that book tries to make them sound. ND is always near the top of schools who graduate their players.

Im sure Corp leading O Lu to a Pac 5 title, state title and then him winning the MVP of EVERY all star game he played in had nothing to do with him moving from a 3 star rating. Who was the most outstanding player of the State title games, Claussen who threw 4 interceptions vs a school with only 600 students and had to be saved by the Jones brothers to even win his game, no it was Corp, who on the largest stage of the year lead his team to a blow out victory.
and he is 2 years younger than Claussen

The only problem with your little story is that Corp went form a 3 star to a 5 star within a week of commiting to USC. And Clausen had one bad game.

Do you want to continue to debate Crisman and Crist, or are we done here?

Risa wrote:And Van used to relay the story -- on the other board -- about what happened to him at USC, regarding the baseball team, and his own scholarship.
I remember it a little differently.

IIRC, Van wanted to play baseball at USC, but was offered only a partial, rather than full, scholarship. He couldn't afford the difference, so he wound up at CSUN instead. After he got hurt, CSUN pulled the aid they had given him.

Coupla points here:

1. CSUN wasn't a D1 program at that time; and
2. Baseball isn't football, certainly not in terms of revenue production.

I'm not saying that justified what CSUN did, or that Van didn't get screwed, just explaining it in a different light. Title IX notwithstanding, it's entirely possible, and certainly not unreasonable, that all college athletes aren't treated entirely equally, based on the sport played and level of competition. Van and I are about the same age (actually less than three months apart IIRC), and I can tell you for a fact that ND football players who suffered career-ending injuries when I was a student at ND did not lose their scholarships as a result.

Btw, add Northwestern and Duke to the list of 1-A schools with stellar academics.

link to his 2 star jump within a week of his USC commit? He jumped becuase the scouts finally got to see the kid play.

We can wait til they actually start playing games to see if Crissman or Crist is the better QB, but it wont matter if Crissman performs better at a higher level that Crist does as a SR, I mean obviously Corp outperforming Clausen didnt

According to Butlers mom, USC was the ONLY school of those that offered him scholarships to not send Brice Butler a copy of this years media guide (a recruiting violation)

How exactly did Corp out perform Clausen? Because Clausen played poorly in his championship game? If Corp is so much better, why did Carrol continue to persue Clausen well after Corp was committed?

And I thought you said Crissman was ranked higher than Crist?
