Oh, and I see Oregon is opening up vs a conference foe. Dins, is this SOP?
Big no.
Usually starts with all 3 OOC games, then the (now) 9 conf games, which seems pretty standard in the PAC, except in the case of teams with ND games, as a general rule.
Much less opening with an archrival. Before school starts. In August when it will be warm-to-hot in Eugene.
Not sure how I feel about it, but sounds like a good time regardless. Might have to look into it.

Friggin' Beano. If it wasn't for his smacking chinflaps, Powlus wouldn't have been considered such a bust. The whole "Two Heisman" thing really made people take extra notice in Powlus, elevating his hype far beyond what it already was when he came out of high school.

While I can't argue with your post, Beno will always get a pass in my book for calling the Texas v Arkansas game in 1969 as the title game way back in March of that year. He is the reason ABC moved that game to Dec and that game was instrumental in making CFB the TV sport it has become.

I've always felt that too much was made of Beano's one almost off-handed comment about Powlus. Yes it was ridiculous, but that's just how he rolls. Too many of those who have followed him try to adhere to a more "scientific" viewpoint in their color analysis...which strikes me as dry. It's good to have someone making absurd predictions, it brings color to the games. I've spoken to Beano several times and I have always found him to be absolutely hilarious - full of wit and vigor and anecdotal charm.

Yeah, but it looks like a baby rumplewife is dangling from his chin. I can't get past that when he speaks.

Well...he also smells pretty bad. Appearance is not his strong point...for that, I suggest Met-Art.

An excellent book about the game:

Yeah a great book even if you aren't a fan of either team. Book does a nice job of letting you get to know the major players in that game.
Top 5 football book IMO. Might even be top 3, but Civil War holds the top spot without discussion.

I realize that preseason polls this early are about as useful as airports in SEC towns

seriously. no one takes anything he says seriously but still flip out that he said something so unremarkable as dood will win a couple heismans, which has obviously never been used as football idiom for he'll be pfg.

I don't hate Beano, but to deny that his prediction will forever be a part of the Ron Powlus legacy, for the worse, would be disingenuous. Hopefully that very basic point hasn't been too overshadowed in this thread.

Classic.
This guy "updates" his rankings by tossing out MSU and slotting ND right in there at #25. Yeah, because so much has happened between May and June. :?
He also leaped UGA over Ohio St for the top spot.

tech and clemson leap frog Mizzou.
I don't know where Mizzou ends up ranked, but they are a ton better team than Tech and Clemson. How many times does Mizzou have to beat the shit out of Tech, in their crib, and then last year in Columbia, to prove they are the super fraud.
Clemson has a bad coach, poor Qb'ing, and will lose atleast 2 Conference games, if not 3.
You want to move certain teams up, ok, but those 2 are a joke. Also, let's add in, this theory that a WR who had 2 td's not playing hurts Mizzou, they brought in several WR who are big and fit the system. they have a TE who plays as a WR. I don't get it.
someone needs to add a "your teams record this season" thread.

yeah, i'm a little leery of playing the Bearcats.
i'm not entirely sold on this year's Sooners. just a feeling, i guess.
Stilll kinda wary after those three upset-losses last season? I think OU will be their usual top10 selves but trip a time or two on the way. Their noncon should be challenging, Cinci is no joke plus TCU and Wash will scrap. The 12 is going to be tough. Texas will be a different team with Muschamp's D. Leach will have his best team. KU will be very dangerous coming the week after the RRS. Plus you have the usual assortment from Neb, ATM, Okie State, and KSU looking to pull an upset. Then there is still the 12-championsip. I see a two-loss season, which is nothing to sneeze at.
You know part of me wants to agree with you because I don't want to be let down again coming into a season smelling a national title on the horizon... but when I look at this group of Sooners on paper I have to think this is our year and if it isn't we need to make it that way.
OU has the nations top offensive line coming into the season.
The top eight are all back from a line that last season was pretty salty. Two virtually guaranteed first round draft picks, one who may be the first overall if things work out right for him and a third that might sneak into the first round but will almost certainly be gone by the third; two more that will be taken by the time the day is over. That's the good news and the bad news... we'll have one part time starter from this season returning next season. This is sort of do or die time with the Oline situation and with all this talent it's put up or shut up time for them.
Oklahoma has the nations most efficient passer last season and don't expect a soph slump for him because of the fore mentioned line. Anyone who watches football saw Texas play and while I may read the delusions on the homer boards I don't believe them... Chance Mock is talented any Sooner that doesn't see that is a moron. His line last season was a rebuild and he got tossed to the wolves. Sam isn't going to have to face that. He's going to be able to sit back and do his job.
Runningback we are deep with Murray who has break away speed, Brown who is a consistant 3.4 everytime he hits the line, Madu who no one has
really seen. And two freshman that are supposed the "next thing" (they always are).
I personally feel we have one of the top 3 TEs in college football in Gresham... [homer]and that's being humble about it because frankly I think he's the next Antonio Gates. [/homer] Two more tight ends that are capable.
Wide Receivers there is loads of talent. Juaquin Iglesis needs to not drop as many balls. Manual Johnson just needs to just keep burning fools. Caleb needs to finally show up with the talent he was hyped with having. Tennel needs to be more consistant and hit his routes better. Shit load of freshman (redshirt and not). They say the rFrosh Stratford has WHEELS...
Defensive line has 4 guys that all have starting experience under their belts including the conference best pass rusher Auston English. DT has two kids that were both the hypothetical #1s in their respective HS classes and both have starting experience along with other challengers in the mix. The line is deep for the first time in years at both DT and DE.
LBs will be plugged in... they always are at OU. And every other year it's how do we replace such and such and every year this staff, namely Brent Venebles, has a gem or two. Sooner fans can bitch about him all they want but we have a guy we hope doesn't get a HC job anytime soon in truth. He developes linebackers like Iowa grows corn.
The secondary is what scares me. I don't know what to say about most of them because I haven't ever really seen them on the field... Nic Harris is gooooood sums it up.
I just have to feel this season is what it has been building towards. The bowl losses... I mean no one in their right mind can really think that Bob is less a coach, look at his overall record and record against other top 15 teams, it's sick. It's always darkest before the dawn type shit leading to this...

The thing about Beano was that he said shit like that all the time about ND and their players. I remember him making a comment that if the 1992 ND team played in the AFC, they would give the Bronco's a run for their money.
But it wasn't just that comment that did Powlus in. There was that comment, the fact that he won the job in 1993 before getting hurt, and then his first two games as ND's QB. He lights up Northwestern for 270+ yards and 4 TD's. In a Holtz offense, that's like throwing for 500 yards and 7 TD's. Musberger is blowing him, and then they show him giving the game ball to a kid in a wheelchair. The next week, when he leads what looks to be a game winning drive against Michigan, Chris Collinsworth hacks and coughs his way to saying "Move over Joe Montana!!"
Powlus was a square peg in a round hole. Had he gone to a different school, he would have been regarded very differently.

I just said the list was bullshit. I didn't say Fresno didn't belong on such a list. It's bullshit that they're not higher.
