That's kind of how I feel about CU fans, to be honest. Not you Mike, but on boards and buddies, CU fan needs to wake up and move on. Hiring Eric Bienemy as OC is not a clever thing to think. or Alfred Williams as DC. the "Back to McCartney" stuff is horrible. Mike Hankowitz is apparently the only good DC in America.

OU went through the "back to the past" thing with Blake, Bama with Shula, USC with Robinson 2, whatever....

Hell I don't know, ask me this question in mid January of 2014. That will be after this class has used their 5 years to play 4 seasons. I will be happy to answer your question then.
Pretty sure I already covered that, with this...
I know none of this will really matter until we see how it all pans out a few years down the road but still when there's this much smoke there has to be a few fires.

KC, no, the Bugeaters didn't just have a good recruiting class, not unless a whole bunch of their kids turn out better than projected.

They got zero five stars. They barely got any four stars. On paper, which is all we have to go by right now, that's a shitty class. You can rest easy that they'd swap their class for Bama's and take their chances; lock, stock and barrel.

This is Nebraska we're talking about here, not Iowa St. For a program of Nebraska's stature they got nothing, at least on paper. They did no better than Cal. Hell, they might've done less than Cal.

It isn't just the "It's Nebraska, who would wanna live there?" thing either. Norman, Oklahoma? South Bend, Indiana? Columbus, Ohio? Ann Arbor, Michigan? Baton Rouge, Louisiana? Tuscaloosa, Alabama?

None of these places are exactly Malibu, Times Square or South Beach. Other than home town kids no stud teenage athlete would choose to go to these programs because of their locale. In many cases kids choose to go to those places despite the location, not because of it.

By and large a program's basic desirability as a locale has little bearing on its overall success, otherwise Rutgers, Miami and UCLA would always dominate every recruiting class.

Lincoln, Nebraska was always Lincoln, Nebraska and it never used to stop Nebraska from dominating, and that included recruiting. During Nebraska's salad days they weren't pulling in classes that barely sniffed the Top 25. Maybe they weren't always pulling in #1 classes but they were certainly competitive near the top.

Can't blame the town of Lincoln for this sudden change.

Van,

I give you Marlon Lucky (5 star recruit out of Hollywood CA...i bet your moist) and Roy Helu Jr. (3 star recruit).

The results this year should tell you enough.

Stars don't always equate to greatness. Osborne's best class (success on the field, sheer numbers drafted to NFL, and then success in the NFL) wasn't even a top 20 class.

no one but you is blaming Lincoln. find the numbers that NU had "near the top" classes and show us, if that's what you are going to claim.

On any individual basis, of course not.

As an across the board ratio?

A lack of stars is a sure indicator of a lack of a program's greatness. They'll never consistently compete if they have to live off of a diet of two stars.

Before too long Texas and OU will swallow them whole.
Osborne's best class (success on the field, sheer numbers drafted to NFL, and then success in the NFL) wasn't even a top 20 class.
Try that now. Try succeeding that way now, year in and year out. See if you can successfully compete with Texas that way.

Guarantee you Nebraska did not average classes that weren't even in the Top 20, not back when they were still Nebraska. They brought in more than their fair share of four and five stars.

Bullshit. I was defending Lincoln. I wasn't the one who attempted to use the Lincoln excuse as part of the explanation for Nebraska's recruiting failures...

I was actually responding to this...

I was dismissing that notion, at least in terms of it having any real correlation to recruiting success.

Van, it's time to get out of the house.... maybe take a trip to Muir Woods ?

The only thing that matters... is 7 months from now.

Cal returns 18 starters and Riley won't have Tedford's pet (Longshore) looking over his shoulder.

Cal is going to ass-fuck $C next year.... and it's not even up for debate.

$C may be 5 deep.... but, Cal is now 3 deep (for the first time ever) and is gonna just RAPE "south central".

$C doesn't have the speed to keep up with Cal.

This is Missouri we're talking about here. Missouri Fans' birthright is a Big XII cleat mark permanently scoring their oddly oversized forehead.

Your main rival is Kansas...in football. The Missouri/Kansas rivalry is like the debate between Mississippi and Arkansas over who's dumber, with the only difference being that in the case of Missouri vs Kansas the rivals are quite a bit fatter and considerably less interesting.

You had one season of fresh air and it was based entirely on smoke and mirrors. Now it's gone. No more Cheetos and Slim Fast empties in the locker room and back you go to perennial doormat status.

I would think that lacking any solid evidence to the contrary the natural inclination of a rational Missouri fan (I know, but work with me here) following LOI day would be to assume that the sky is falling.
Van, why did you have to edit that Five times? Jeez, that concerned with every word?

As my Big XII south brethren might say, all hat and no cattle.

Lighten up.

I see why you put a self imposed ban on yourself. You take this time wasting banter waaay too fucking seriously.

As for my beloved Tigers, you know the drill... but if I ever edit a post 5 times, feel free to shoot me.

So it's not just football? They also lord their speech over you too?

Seriously, if you're going to allow yourself to be told how to speak you could probably do better than prostrating yourself before the likes of Hank Hill.

Maybe tune into the BBC or something. Maybe PBS, or old episodes of "Frasier," paying particular attention to when the dad plays with Eddie...

Van,
Have you ever been to Lincoln? I'm not saying location is the only factor in a kid's decision, or even the most important factor, but what 18-year-old kid wouldn't at least take it into consideration? Just because Nebraska has had incredible success in the past doesn't mean they're entitled to a Top 10 class year in and year out. Back in the day, Nebraska had three major things going for them:

1. They never won less than 9 games.
2. They had the best S&C facilities in the country.
3. They ran an offense that was relatively unique.

None of those things are true anymore. Huskerfans, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Nebraska was ever known for their recruiting prowess. If anything, they were known for taking a lot of unheralded & underrated kids and turning them into studs, via #2 and #3 from above.

Now, Nebraska is just another school with good facilities running a pro-style offense. They'll put together a great team every once in a while, just like every BCS school does, but I think their days of 30some consecutive 9-win seasons are behind them.

Jsc, everything I've ever seen and heard says the best facilities in the country can be found at Oregon and LSU. I've seen LSU's and yeah, they're amazing. They certainly blow away USC's, for instance.

Oregon's though, with all that Nike money? Their facilities are just ridiculous.

It always made me wonder, exactly how difficult would it be for schools like UCLA or Oregon to recruit against USC?

Seems to me like it it ought to be a fairly easy sell, at least to the extent that these other programs should end up being closely competitive.

~Mike Bellotti sits on JaShaquellaya's couch, sharing some cool, refreshing grape soda with JaShaquellaya's mother, step mother, god mother, six uncles, three great aunts, one ex step dad and four random kids from the 'hood...who all have their hands out, looking to see what they can git from this slick talkin' Oregon dude~

"Look, JaShaq...can I call you JaShaq? Excellent. Look, here's the deal at Oregon. Sure, you could go to USC. We all know that.

But why would you want to? Seriously. First off, it's in the 'hood. It's full on ghetto. Nuthin' but blacks and Messicans. Rampant crime. Urban blight. It's a fuggen shithole. It's South Central, for god's sake!"

~Mike notices the room has suddenly become deathly silent. He looks up and notices eighteen pairs of folded arms. They're all lookin' at him like, "Oh no you di'int!"

"Fuck," he thinks to himself. "Back pedal mode, pronto!"~

"So, as a I was saying, it's about playing time, and preparing you to take that next step.

Sure, you could go to USC. Eeeeeeeeeverybody goes to USC. What a bunch of sheep. You're not a sheep, are you, JackShack?

No, you're not. You're a full on baller!"

~the room explodes in a series of boisterous whoops, "hollah"s and creative and oddly perverse dance moves, considering the enormous size of most of the people huffing and puffing away with their bad selves.~

"Here's the shiznet, son. Did I say that right? Anyway, look. You're an all world linebacker right now. Sure, you're twenty years old but hey, shit happens and some people have to get held back a couple times, right?

I get that. Let's just say though that you hadn't gotten held back. Let's say you'd even gone to USC.

Maualuga, Cushing, Maiava, even that surfer bitch Clay Matthews. You're a STAR, son. You want your reps, right? You don't need those douches harshing your gig.

Now they've got Galippo, and guys like Jarvis Jones coming in. Serious bummer, I'd say.

Yeah, you could go there and deal with that primma donna crap or you could come to Oregon.

Ever heard of Jonathan Stewart? Nick Reed? That big fuggen crazy Samoan nose tackle, the dude who's starring for the Baltimore Ravens now?

That could be YOU son, and it WILL be you because we're gonna let you come in and kick ass right away.

Also, USC has gunfights and liquor stores. (He turns to Momma Battleaxe.) Sorry, ma'am, I'm just thinking about your son's welfare here. Whoop whoop! (Mike raises the roof, very whitely. Grudgingly, Momma Battleaxe reciprocates with a half hearted whoop of her own.)

You know what Oregon has? Here, let me show you...

~he reaches into his Pee Chee folder and he pulls out some large, glossy pictures, which he spreads out on the dining room table~

Check this shit out. This is your Oregon...

~the room is filled with ooohs and aahs, like treasure seekers who just stumbled upon the Lost Big Fuggen Pile O' Treasure. Finally, the spell is broken and the room explodes in pertinent commentary~

"They got weed!"

"They got white women!"

"They got weed!"

"They got LOTSA white women!"

"They white women smoke weed!"

"Didja see the mutherfuckin' dubs on that motherfucker??"

~gently, one of JaShaquellaya's great aunts nudges him aside and whispers into his ear, "Playing time, baby boy. Playing time. The man says you can play, and go to The Show. You gonna buy your great auntie a new crib, ain't you?"

~JaShaquellaya waits for his erection to subside and then with a great big gold capped smile he turns his attention back to the strange white man sitting on his couch~

"Mr Oregon man, sheeeit, I don't know, man. You gotsta sweeten the pot a little, ya know, dawg?"

~Bellotti gets a serious look on his face. He weighs his options. His spies have already informed him that Pete Carroll is in a limo and headed over to this very house, right the fuck now. The decision is made. Yep, Mike, you gotta do it. Your ace in the hole, you gotta play it now.

Leaning back into his briefcase he pulls out one last picture. Smiling triumphantly at JaShaquellaya and the entire assembled throng he throws down his one, final picture...~

JaShaquelleya snatches the proffered LOI from Mike's hands.

"Fuck it. Gimme a pen. I'm down..."

Looks so much different there from how I'm used to seeing it... it's where they serve the brew during the game, complete with a live band and big screens, in case you don't make it back into the stadium before the second half starts. (And it's quite the freaking meet-market, for playahs of all ages.)

I've heard that LSU has great facilities... but let's not get carried away... Nike U could buy the entire state of Louisiana.

Amarillo is in the Panhandle, no? I did the cross-country drive thing while in law school on more than one occasion, and I remember passing through Amarillo on I-40 in the Texas Panhandle. Invariably, I would stop there -- always for gas, and sometimes for food as well. Not because I was in love with the place, but because it was, IIRC, 200+ miles to the next outpost of civilization in either direction -- Oklahoma City to the east, Albuquerque to the west.

amarillo is mos def in the panhandle. i've made that drive to OKC many times, it's not 1-70 or 1-80 boring but close and the long haul truckers at night can be pretty aggressive. lubbock is about 100-120 miles south of amarillo, looking at mapquest. i thought it was about 200 miles south. maybe one of our texans can weigh in on what constitutes/doesn't constitute "the panhandle".
