Owned two Cutlasses myself. A '76 and '77 model. Freaking behemoths, but they drove nice.

I ended up with 2 - this one got totaled, and then got a red one with the white vinyl roof
Come to think of it, It got totaled too

The 350 was a great engine - easy to work on and the back seat was....... cramped
I remember well working on my 350 olds. I also remember that the firing order counter clockwise instead of clockwise like the chevy 350. The distributor was in the rear of the engine vs. in the front like the Buick 350. Also the pushrods were torqued from the inside of the motor and were not adjustable from the top? Made for a longer stroke and more power? or something like that.

Really?

I never found anything about the 350 easy to work on, and I had several. Knuckle-busting, back-breaking, gas hogging motherfuckers...

As for the back seat... yep.

Mine - same color, same # of doors....but a '64....the only thing worse than having a 6cyl is a 6 cyl with modified exhaust...

It's all relative Dave - I could change the plugs, distributor cap, alternator, starter or a fuse without being Microsoft certified.
I could change the oil filter without having to buy a $60 "special" socket.
I could go to the salvage yard on Truman and buy a fender or a bumper and replace it

Today? Not so much.

Huh?

Pushrod torque, firing order? What kind of bullshit are you trying to peddle here?

The 350 8 cyl. engine was standard thruout the fleet, didn't matter what make or model. The distributor was in the rear.

Wait a minute..... I do believe the buick (pontiac?) 350 had the distributor in the front and the rockers or push rods or something in the Olds 350 were not adjustable from the top under the valve covers. Also, the olds firing order was opposite (clock direction) than the chevy 350. Anyone help me here?

Sorry, never got deeper into my 350 than replacing valve cover gaskets, which I remember wasn't anything difficult.

H, I'll just go ahead and put you down as not ever being an engine mechanic (or even remotely understanding an internal combustion engine) and leave it at that.

Hell, in that pic it kind of looks like a BMW 2002, which wasn't an ugly car at all.

Its nameplate was Datsun, though, not Nissan, at least in America.
Like I said, about a 3/4 scale version of the old 2002 without the luxury appointments.

Seer, that's a recent picture of a car that's almost 45 years old. You were expecting a Z or something? What a fucking moron. I'd take that look over a Mustang II, Pintoilet, Vegamatic, Zephyr (:meds:) or any AMC montrosity of the 60s or 70s any day of the week.

Van, the first US "Datsun" was the 510 which was also the first car the company built exclusively for the US market. The PL411 pre-dated that model and was still a Nissan, at least in 1965 when mine was built. I think the model lasted a couple more years after that.

H, I'll just go ahead and put you down as not ever being an engine mechanic (or even remotely understanding an internal combustion engine) and leave it at that.

Here ya go: http://www.442.com/oldsfaq/ofeng.htm

"While it may be hard to believe in today's era of corporate engines, each GM division, at least through the mid-70s, unlike Ford and Chrysler, had their own unique engine designs. Despite common displacements, all used different bore and stroke combinations with completely different blocks and heads (and everything else). This applies back to the 30's and farther. In the 60's, 70's, and 80's, many divisions and makes built common displacement engines, say 350, 400, 425, and 455.

For example, the Buick, Chevy, Olds, and Pontiac 350s are all totally different, using different bore/stroke dimensions, different block and head castings, and different reciprocating parts. About the only things common among these four motors are the distributor cap and the carb bolt pattern (assuming a Q-jet - the Holley used on some Chevy motors is obviously different). Things like bearings, accessories, sensors and engine add ons are another story.

As an example, the Buick mounts its distributor in the front, while the other three mount it in the back. The Chevy distributor passes through the intake manifold, while the Olds mounts to the block aft of the intake. Even the distributor housings are different among the four." -FROM THE LINK

I can't believe this pic and post hasn't gotten more run from you sick fucks.

The possibilities are endless, right down to the Triple A sticker on that bumper that must've weighed at least 500 lbs.

The mischievous look on Bobby's face, the knee high socks, poor little sis about to be stuffed in the trunk.

Dang, H. It took you 3 days to track down that link? Sheesh, this must have been tearing you up.

Well, despite the guy saying he wasn't an expert, since it's posted on the internet, it must be true.

Whatever, but the 2nd car I ever owned was a 1970 Buick Skylark with, you guessed it, a 350 engine. I'll admit I'm no expert either, maybe the distributor was in the front. At that time, the only thing I was concerned with was getting stoned. Hell, I could have been sitting on the distributor for all I knew at the time.

Anyways, I'll concede that point.

Adjustable pushrods and rocker arms, not so much. Let's assume you're correct and that they were, indeed, adjustable. Why the hell would you want to adjust the factory settings? They have these things called specs. If at anytime you found it necessary to remove the valve covers and monkey around with the rocker arms, wouldn't your intent be to put them back exactly the way they were to start with?

Of course it would.

So I'm left thinking that you were just trying to sound knowledgable about a subject you really don't have much practical experience with. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Pretty much, that's what we do here everyday, with varying degrees of success.
