Do you know why Italy's best restaurants are found in Tuscany? It has do with the way they prepare their food. It's very different from what you'll find in Lombardy, where Milan is located. If you've ever actually been to Italy (doubtful), you would know that many of the country's 20 regions offer very different styles of cuisine. That's why I mentioned the region first AND and a city even dumbfucks like you might recognize. That's right, dumbfuck. Florence is mentioned in this quote below:

ucan't, it would appear however that Rome is still considered to be Italy's finest restaurant city, at least according to most reputable sources, such as the Michelin Guide and Zagats.

Of course the sheer size of Rome compared to cities like Florence has a lot to do with that.

Unfortunately for me, we missed Florence, and the Cinque Terra. Missing Florence (merely taking a train right past it) is my biggest regret from our time in Italy, and I'm still pissed that we missed the Cinque Terra region.

That being said, Rome was a tremendous restaurant city, and a tremendous city, period.

Bandera is probably the best bet for american..right around the corner from Howe on Fairoaks. Awesome deepdish cornbread, their salmon is always killer, and oven roasted chicken is a specialty.

The best eatery in Sac. without a doubt is "The Kitchen". Six course specialty menu, with sushi served at halftime. Been there twice, the cost per head averaged well over over $2 bills (thanks to the wine)

"We" weren't discussing shit. The subject of this thread is not “best restaurant cities” in the world. Also, I don’t have to limit my responses to the narrow scope your feeble mind is capable of processing.

I responded directly to Van's post about Milan. Milan can't be part of any list for the simple fact that it's not in Tuscany. The sooner you're able to comprehend this, the sooner my boot stops waggling around your mouth.

I loved both of my visits to Florence, btw. Thanks for asking. I hope you had an awesome time with that transgendered dwarf you spoke so fondly of.

Au contraire, mon frere...

Or something similar, in Italian. Whatever.

Milan can be included on all sorts of lists...

-Cities in Italy.

-Cities mentioned as one of the best restaurant (and fashion) cities in the world, according to many magazines I've riffled through as I sat there waiting in countless doctor's, dentist's and chiro's offices.

-Cities which are home to the great race tracks of the world. (Monza.)

-Cities I visited.

-Cities where my wife nearly got lost, looking for a "decent restroom."

-Cities which thoroughly pissed off my wife, because, "...how can they not offer Ceaser salad dressing, in Italy?? ALL I wanted in Italy was a good Ceasar salad!"

-Cities which sported the hottest women I saw in all of Europe. That one perfect cunt leaning over the railing, at the train station, with her completely translucent peasant skirt, her bone jarring body and that long, flowing, sable hair...goddammit. That chestnut haired woman trying on lingerie, who then smirked so confidently at me, so imperiously at me, as she thoroughly enjoyed showing off for me...

...yeah, Milan makes some lists.

Van -- I hope you make it back and visit Florence some day. You seem like an artsy type of dude, so I am sort of shocked you didn't "stop in."

Also, hiking The 5 Lands (Cinque Terre) will afford you some of the most amazing views you'll ever see in your life. Awesome traills cut right into the mountainside. Some of the hikes between the 5 villages can be rough if you select the trails right long the water (sure they're the hardest ones, but why the fuck wouldn't you? You can see "woods" any old place) My wife and I "did the whole fucking village" in one day. Took us about 8 hours... but we stopped countless times to take pictures, etc and also had lunch in the middle (Corniglia.)

I guess I sorta am an "artsy type of dude," at least compared to some people, anyway.

Florence is on my Top 10 list of cities I still want to see...

New York
Florence
London
Belfast
Edinburgh
Prague
Barcelona
Seville
Vienna
Copenhagen.

Awww, fuck. I can't even come close to limiting it to just ten. There's plenty of places in Switzerland, Germany and eastern Europe I still want to see. Lisbon, the British Isles (I know, not a city), Santiago, La Paz, Buenos Aires, Christchurch, Melbourne, Perth...it'd never end.

Oddly, I have little to no interest in seeing anything in Africa or Asia. I guess I wouldn't mind seeing Jerusalem, but I wouldn't need more than a day or two to see everything I'd want to see in the Middle East.

Africa? Not a damn thing.

Okay...Madagascar, if you want to count that as Africa. I'd also enjoy doing a motorcycle tour in South Africa, but that's about it, and there are plenty of places where I'd rather do one. (The Alps region and New Zealand, being the two primary ones.)

I wouldn't turn my nose up at seeing numerous places in Asia, but there's nothing in Asia I would prioritize seeing; certainly not over Europe.

Florence, though...Florence is in my Top 5.

According to two Italian families I know, who are from Italy, and they go back twice a year, the two best (most beautiful, and the most fun to visit) regions in Italy are Tuscany and the northwest coastline, including the Cinque Terra. Supposedly there are a couple of other lesser known towns very nearby the Cinque Terra which are way more fun.

The Amalfi Coast is also supposed to be pretty badass.

Maybe she should have asked for a Caesar salad instead...and in TJ or So Cal.
I always transpose the e and the a in Caesar. I've been fucking that one up since I was a little kid. It's some sort of a mental block.

Otherwise, hey, it wasn't totally unreasonable for her to expect to see a Caesar salad, in the dude's home country. She had no problem finding "Italian dressing," all sorts of pastas and Italian pizza, so why not Caesar salad too?

If we ever make it to England we're also expecting to see British bulldogs, goofy looking taxis, buttloads of rain and bread pudding.

Unreasonable?

Sure, I'd be fine checking out Egyptian antiquity, but I don't have enough of a desire to see it that I'd chose Cairo over dozens of other places I'd rather see in Europe and elsewhere.

Seeimg the sphynx involves going to Cairo, and dealing with a horrendously filthy Arab city. No thanks. I'll be content to National Geographic my way through Africa.

Now, if I were retired, and all I did was travel the world at my leisure, of course I'd eventually include Egypt and other spots in Africa.

I'd sure visit a lot of other places, though, before I made my way over to that corner of the world.

Yeah, mvscal, pretty much. Thankfully, neither of us are too into French food, much less vichyssoise.

You know what we did seek out and find in Paris, and it was excellent?

French Onion soup. Fuck yeah.

Now that one, yep, I wouldn't have been surprised to discover it wasn't really a French thing.

After getting dicked on the Caesar salad in Italy deal, she was naturally a little reticent to even ask for French Onion soup in Paris, but dammit, she's spunky that way.

We also were pleased to find chateaubriand in Paris. If they would've dicked us on that one, screw it, we quit.

Susan's still pissed about the Caesar salad thing. The last time we saw my mom, we got to talking about Europe. Of all the things to tell her, that was the first thing Susan dropped on mom.

She's holding a grudge against Italy, big time, over the Caesar salad issue. I see no signs of it ever ending.

I know I am. Whenever I do have it, I really enjoy it.

I think it comes down to a value perception thing. French food is just so spendy, and the portions are so small. Yes, they're artfully presented, and I can't say that they're not enjoyable, but neither of us are wine or champagne drinkers and her tastes in food run much simpler than mine.

She's happy with meat-and-potatoes American food. She has little use for foo-foo food. I have to make her try new foods, and she only does so with little enthusiasm.

I've always enjoyed anything French I've ever had, but by the same token no French food has ever blown me away, either; certainly, not like my favorite Italian foods.

I guess it's just what you're used to, and what your expectations are. French restaurants are always high end restaurants, unless you're talking phony, Americanized boulangeries. Except for special occasions I just don't see the value in doing high end restaurants.

Bottom line, I simply haven't had enough French food to really speak very intelligently to the subject. I know I'm missing out.

There are things to see in Africa. I would love to see victoria falls or go on a safari. I would also like to hike kilimanjaro.

I have been to the pyramids. You really do need to see them. They are number one 1 on my list of most impressive things man made. It is amazing what a few hundred thousand properly motivated slaves can do.

I had seen a million pics in nat. geo and many other places of the pyramids. None do justice. You simply have to stand in front of them to appreciate the absolute ginormity.

I'm sure Africa's natural wonders are incredible. I'm also sure the pyramids and the sphynx and all the other ancient Egyptian architectural achievements are amazing.

No doubt, and I would like to see them. I wouldn't pass on the opportunity.

There's just no way I'd prioritize seeing them over all the other places I'd rather see. They're simply not high on my list, and I have a long list.

Maybe it was only 50,000 or so. I'm sure much of the skilled labor was hired, but, I would guess that plenty of the grunt work was done by slaves seeing as god hadn't invented messicans yet.

The Greeks believed that slave labour was used but modern Egyptologists accept that it was built by many tens of thousands of skilled workers. They camped near the pyramids and worked for a salary or as a form of paying taxes until the construction was completed.

Correct. It's part of my "culturalism." I don't like the shitty parts of L.A. and I wouldn't like Bangladesh either.

I've been told that Naples is a dirty shithole, because it's too congested and filthy.

"Big City" does not necessarily mean urban squalor. Paris is beautiful. Amsterdam was bitchin'. Plenty of big cities are beautiful.

By all accounts, Cairo is disgusting.

Plus, I have no love for Muslim culture. Cairo is staunchly Muslim. I'd just as soon avoid fetid, third world Muslim locales.

I'll put up with it, in order to see the ancient Egyptian monuments, but it's always going to be way down on my list of travel destinations.
I take it this means your trip to Italy never went south of Rome?
Correct. I was warned off of Naples and Sorrento though, oddly, I was also told the Amalfi Coast is great. Mainly, Naples is just too dirty and congested.

I do want to see Sicily, however.
Actually, by the time you get to rome, it's already kinda dirty. Drive down to naples and it could give cairo a run. Well, nahhh, it ain't quite that bad, but, not too far from it.
All I ever heard leading up to our trip was that Rome is filthy and crime ridden and Parisians will be the rudest people you'll ever meet.

Totally wrong, in both cases, per our experience. Rome was fucking beautiful, and not the least bit dirty. All we did was walk the city, too. I don't like to drive when I can walk, especially when I really want to see a city.

Rome? No complaints. It was very clean, very orderly and everything worked out just fine. I will say that we never used their underground subway. We were warned about the crime there, so maybe it does suck, but we never had occasion to use it.

Paris? All across the board, the best treatment we received was in Paris. People in Kentucky (Cincinatti's airport), they were rude as fuck. Parisians were nearly as friendly to us as the resort staff in Jamaica. Paris was spotless and the people treated us very courteously. Everywhere we went, people were exceedingly friendly and helpful, even on the Metro. (Yeah, Paris was too large to walk. We sometimes used the Metro, which was just brilliant.)

People actually stopped to offer us help, whenever we'd be looking over a map. They gave us no shit or "attitude" over our inability to speak French.

So, screw it, in the future I'll just find out for myself about people and places.

That being said, Cairo is still Cairo.

MaJongs chinese diner at the corner of L & 15th Street, across from the State Capitol has really decent prices, tasty food, unique atmosphere, bar next door, lots of political type chics hanging out (aides, etc...), if eye candy helps any. You walk in and order at the counter, food is brought out by staff, had lunch there last Friday, just before I trolled the hallways in the state capitol (lobbying).......

The Pheasant Club is another local landmark, just over the "I" Street bridge.......

As to Bucadipeppo's, the pasta is actually pretty decent and the portions are huge...

The Attorney Generals Building has a fun restauarant on the ground floor, usually lots of hotties coming and going.

Well, yeah, but upgrading a plate of pasta from big to huge costs them an extra dime and they tack five bucks onto the charge. Still, the Frutta de Mare kicks ass. But when you get right down to it, it's just pasta and clams for twenty bucks.

Big fan of Buca de Beppo, but only if I want garlic and olive oil weeping out of my pores for three days.

I've tried most of Buca's menu and nearly everything has been very good. The only poor item I've ever had there was their calamari appetizer. It's usually at least decent, though never exceptional. The last time we were there, however, it was overly breaded and it was overcooked.

That's their only item I'd be reluctant to order again.

Their osso buco is just phenomenal, though it's only rarely available.

First time I had Frutta de Mare, the sauce tasted so amazing, I'd swear a chef had held a heating pad against Jessica Alba's mons venus for six hours, then slowly milked her labia like udders over a plate of fettucine. I've had it three times since and each was just average.

It's by far the best restaurant pasta that I've had on the west coast though.

You know you had a genuine dago grandma if she had the industrial size metal olive oil can in the kitchen. Those dainty little bottles are for wannabe italian chefs. Kinda like what I have.
