Degenerate, who might such a team be? Who would the one loss, highly ranked team be which hasn't lost in over six weeks and is rolling by season's end?

Texas? If Texas loses the RRS then maybe, but who are they going to play over those final six weeks that would allow them to leapfrog from something like #7 - which is where they'll fall if they lose - all the way to #2, merely by Bama or Florida losing a close one to the other?

If Cincy loses, forget it, they're done. Same with Iowa or Kansas. Obviously no one loss mid-majors will even have a prayer.

In the near future Ohio St will definitely not get in, not over an SEC team with an equal or superior record/resume.

Penn St? With their anemic schedule, and lack of quality wins?

Va Tech? Va Tech's going to win the measly ACC and get in over the team which beat them - or Florida?

Highly doubt it.

Oregon? Hmmm. Maybe. With a dominating win over USC...maybe. Not likely though. Bama vs Oregon for all the marbles, or Bama vs Florida? Pretty sure they'd go with Bama vs Florida.

Nope, we both know there's only one possible one loss team with enough media clout and current "good will" BCS cache to have a solid chance at sneaking in under the scenario I'm describing, and that would be USC. They're the only team which would have all the elements in place necessary to leapfrog the loser of that hypothetical SEC CCG.

-Very early season loss

-Conference champion

-High ranking

-Famous laundry and "helmetocity"

-Their loss didn't come at the hands of any of the key BCS players

-The best resume of any of the key BCS players, with the most big wins, all of which were true road wins

-The desire of much of the nation and certainly much of the media to finally see a USC-SEC title game

Yeah, pretty much, USC would be the only one loss team with a decent shot of getting in over the loser in that hypothetical SEC CCG scenario.

Hey, I don't want to see a Bama-Florida rematch either. I'm just looking at the recent history of the BCS, including their wild love affair with the SEC. It would take a program of equal or superior name recognition to break that thing up, and the only teams with that sort of name recognition are USC, ND, Michigan, OSU, OU, Nebraska and Texas. Of those teams you can already throw out Michigan, OSU, OU and Nebraska.

Shit. Okay, Jesus, maybe ND would have a shot too!

Maybe not. But if it happens, you heard it here first.
Yeah, you heard it here first. From me.

Which part? Bama getting screwed over or Fla losing the SSC CCG?

Yes, Van, I think USC is the obvious fit, especially if they cream ND, handle Oregon, and end the season with a few blowouts.

Texas, I'm not so sure how they lose once and get back in. Maybe if they hiccup against MU or KU (which ain't happening) and avenge that loss in the CCG. Lose to OU this Saturday and still get in? I can see it, but they'd need a LOT of help from others, like VT/USC/tOSU losing ahead of them. Oregon does have a shot if enough things break right.

Other one-loss teams? Not seeing it.

D, I hate to say it but if everything broke right and ND just walloped USC and everyone else the rest of the way I could see their name recognition affording them the shot.

The media would premature ejaculate over the notion of Actual Jesus vs Touchdown Jesus, for all the marbles.

Hadn't thought about that, but you're right. Play up the whole return to glory angle, and you've got a media machine that can go slobber-for-slobber with the Tebows.

Wait, who is dealing in shoulds?

You are, with these statements...
I said earlier that I wish the BCS would put the stipulation that you have to at least win your conference in order to play for the National Championship.

Nebraska and OU shouldn't have played for the Championship in the years they went because they didn't win their Conference.
A wish on the one hand and a should on the other.

I'm talking about woulds.

You are in the sense of a critique, Van is merely making a conditional statement.

I could see Florida losing a close one to Alabama getting in. I don't think they would deserve it, but it could happen. TSPN would be lobbying for it for damn sure. And they have more influence than you think. All this assuming t.u. does not run the table.
You think an undefeated TCU would get in over a one loss Florida or Bama, who looked good in their lone defeat to the #1 team?

I don't. I think TCU would get Utah'd.
umm...i said t.u. not tcu.

go ahead and  yerself.

Ahhh. Yep.

Obviously an undefeated Texas gets in over any one loss team. That's a non-issue. There's no doubt of that.

We're talking about one loss teams. I don't see a one loss Texas - or an undefeated TCU - getting in over Florida or Bama, under the above described scenario.

Not a great game by any stretch of the imagination, and not likely to impress many

Three big plays and next thing you know, they're right back in it
maybe there not worthy of a #5 ranking, not based on that performance

How many bad performances will it take for the pollsters to realize? And that was a pretty shitty sideline interference call. Good thing Tulsa stopped the next play so it didn't cost them the game.

Yes. Entirely. You seem to be really unclear on this whole concept. You're talking about what you'd like to see, and how things should go. I'm talking about how they will go, given a specific set of circumstances which I clearly laid out.

Can you imagine staring down the barrel of a Boise St schedule? After the Oregon game it'd be like that feeling you get when you're just mashing the FF button on your DVD's remote controller, trying to skip the Pauly Shore and Carrot Top previews to get to the damn movie.

Chances are if the movie you selected is previewing Pauly Shore and Carrot Top, there isn't much on the horizon anyway.

Your situation is just as hypothetical as mine. We both are banking on UF and 'Bama being undefeated, which may happen, but there is also a good chance that it doesn't.

You believe the SEC CG loser will play for the National Title and I do not. VT and USC would have to be in the discussion if they run the table and Texas has 1 loss.
