There are 2 things I like about winter. The bugs all disappear and I don't have to mow the grass. Other than that, it sucks.

Die in a hurricane, btw.
We are notified far in advance of a hurricane and depending on the track and just how adventurous I feel I tend to already be in San Antonio, Birmingham, Atlanta, or D.C. long before it makes land fall.

Is winter similar to a hurricane in that you get advanced warning of such a weather phenomenon and allow you time to evacuate? If so why do you not just evacuate until after the phenomenon has passed? :hfal:

Far in advance? You misunderestimate yourself.

Rack your ability to reserve hospice space. Do you have standing reservations at each location or do you rotate from year to year?

Hospice? Dude, short of when I was ill there would never be any need for such: I'm not even the ripe old age of thirty yet. I have places to stay in all but D.C. whenever needed though.

Damn straight. I'm going to empty any and all aerosol cans I have into the atmosphere, burn a couple truck tires in an open pit, and do anything else I can think of to put some carbon and ozone depleting stuff into the atmosphere. We need to get these temps up!!! MINUS 27 windchill overnight here. That's 27 BELOW zero with 30- 40 mph winds to drift the foot of snow all over hell. Fuck Gore!

RACK winter. Some of you midwest and eastern types just need to get outside in your shorts a little more often.

As for toddowen, I urge you to use your coal stove as much and as often as possible. Try it with all the vents, doors and windows closed for a while. You'll get warmer faster that way.

When I pulled off the freeway yesterday @ 7:30am by the Tacoma Dome my bike started sputtering like it was fuel starved. I don't think it liked the cool air...8ยบ. It was fookin freezing all day. Even gloves with liners didn't save the tips of my fingers from frostbite.....and I'm talking about when I was standing. I think I could do w/o this weather.

It's arctic fucking cold here, and it hasn't rained in a couple of weeks... in Portland. The norm would be "hasn't stopped raining in two weeks."

Clicking the link on the weather page...

About the same at the resorts as it is here. And no wind, which is pretty rare. Although apparently they got below zero yesterday. I suppose if one was hell-bent on calling out Chucky, this wouldn't be a bad time for it. I'll pass, thank you very much.

Looks like the resorts have about 4 feet of packed base, which is pretty deece for this time of year.

Maybe the lack of wind is the cause of your bitter (for a weather pussy) temps. It you had some airflow, it would be from a relatively warm place, the pacific. Might actually be a really good time to go up there and throw rocks at old man darwin's house.

Actually, the winds just died down yesterday. And they weren't coming from the Great Heater To The West, they were coming down from Trampis' Shithole down through the Gorge, which always means frigid shit.

As often happens with these patterns, the arctic air is stuck in place, but sometime saturday, a wet one is supposed to push in from the Pacific, and when it hits the standing cold air mass... PARTY TIME! Snow, freezing rain -- we'll see. And we'll see how the Town Without Snowplows, with it's ridiculously ill-spent transportation budget deals with it... my guess is that being a weekend, and a warming trend, their response will be to do nothing -- although they've already thrown down de-icer on the freeway ramps -- very important to be able to safely get onto the ice-rink freeway, you know.

Yes, but I was on a PGR mission to honor the four fallen police officers. We knew that parking would be tight (which it was), and I chose to ride to allow for more room (there was actually about fifty other bikes as well....some from as far away as Oregon).

I get riding to make finding a parking spot easier, but, I do not get having extremeties frozen solid to do it. Not saying that you can't be comfy on a bike in 15 degree weather. You can, if you are properly equipped. Sounds like you weren't. As much as I despise public transportation, I woulda been on it in this occasion.

For the most part I was properly equipped. I had a heated vest (which kept my core temp warm enough) and heated gloves with liners. But from what I heard that day from other riders it's pretty difficult to keep the end of the fingers from freezing. I will be able to make my gloves a little warmer when I purchase a separate controller for the glove temp, but I don't think that will help the finger tips much. The only other problem was where the air was hitting me between my goggles & my balaclava (which I don't think there's much one can do other than where a full-face helmet, which I prefer not to where).

The bigger issue for me was actually when I was off my bike & unplugged (most of the day). Even with layers it was extremely tough to stay warm. My fingers were still getting painfully cold, and after the sun went behind the hillside it was a real bitch to keep from freezing.

It's just the nature of the weather here in the PNW. My g/f is from upstate NY & she says that she's never had as much of a problem staying warm back there as she does here. That wind that comes off of Puget Sound can be a real bone-chiller.

what a dumbfukk. i suggest you stay inside till global warming actually does get here. and get some over mitts to wear over those gloves on cold rides and you'll be fine. Gloves are the sukk at keeping warm in actual cold weather.

Oh, we're talking past tense now? What makes you think I didn't plays sports in this shit as a kid? I've logged many a hour playing tackle football in 2 feet of West Michigan lake effect snow. Once much of the snow was cleared to the side from our running lanes, all that was left was a 2" sheet of ice to break our fall. We fucking lined it up in the POWER I and played SMASHMOUTH FOOTBALL.

Jeebus, Diego. Get the thingamajigs that go over the end of the bars. I believe Hippo Hands is the big brand, I've got a set of nylons cheapies, which still make a HUUUUUUUUGGGGGEEEEE difference. Hell, I haven't even owned a bike in years, you can have them. Spent 3 U&L winters getting around on a bike as a young man... no thanks.

Getting anywhere on a bike in anything below 25 is nuts. And 45 ain't really a prty either, but magnitudes of degrees better than <25.

Starting the last part of my trip west from Detroit to Portland. Looks like some winter weather advisories for most of OR.

I hope the roads stay clear from Boise to Portland. Getting into Iowa City on Wednesday night sucked and getting from there to Des Moines was a three hour cluster on Thursday morning. Got into Laramie, WY Thursday night under clear skies and single digits.

Laramie to Salt Lake was an easy drive with clear skies and mid-20s. The I84 stretch between Salt Lake and Idaho was freaking sweet! Mountains all around you...

Today - bail out of Boise mid-morning...

Iffy, Mak.

The weatherdorks, as per U&L usualm, were wrong. Just a matter of how wrong at this point.

But -- there's a system coming from the south, or so they say, and I-84 is a notorious bitch in winter. Not your standard, garden variety bitch, but a taking-your-life-in-your-hands bitch. The Gorge gets massive amounts of freezing rain under the right conditions -- like these conditions -- and we're talking inches upon inches. And when it does, they just shut the interstate down, to avoid the inevitable carnage, and save on the expense of fishing all the trucks and cars out of The Creek.

But this ominous storm that threatened us Lowlanders with an intimidating 1" of snow pretty much ran out of gas and pooped its pants about 50 miles south, and hasn't shown up yet -- and it's warming up quickly so far this morning... BUT, the Gorge is a whole different animal in winter. WAY colder and wetter, even though it's adjacent to the city.

If they do end up closing I-84 before you make it through -- you're pretty much fucked. If there's precipitation in the Gorge, there's probably twice as much on the alternates. As much as I owe it to this board to allow you to Darwin out -- when you look at the map to scope alternative routes... don't do it. Every one of them involves bigazz mountain passes, and if there's enough of a storm to close 84, you really don't want any part of the mountain passes. Sure, you could chain up (which is often required on the mountain roads, and they will have checkpoints), but even if you're fine, you have to worry about Jose', who is a notorious hazard in winter.

So if you get shut down -- enjoy lovely Pendleton, or The Dalles, or wherever you get fucked into staying. Supposed to warm way up over the next day or two, so it's better to just wait it out. As a few current-events-threads on these boards have shown over the years, the Cascades ain't fucking around in winter.

Snowiest place on Earth + steep twisty mountain roads = Darwin laughs

Supposed to be mid-50's here in the Valley by midweek-btw. And when it's very warm this time of year ("warm" being a relative term), pretty safe bet it'll be raining like hell. Which I'm OK with, as long as it's warm. Then we can go from "winter storm watch" to "flood watch," and the sub-80 IQ motherfuckers the news station HR departments so delight in can lie about something different.

UPDATE -- in the 15 minutes since my last post, it started...

raining. Very very light.

Not freezing rain... just good ol' U&L drizzle/mist.

Now, if there is a storm in the next month (pretty much the window for it, although not carved-in-stone), they'll claim to be out of funds for de-icing, since they spent it on this media-fuelled hype.

I still wouldn't want to be driving through the Gorge, though. BTW-if you read this before you head out, take a break and stop at Multnomah Falls, about 15 miles before you get into town. Freaking spectacular after a few days of really cold temps. You'll thank me later.
