The nagging left elbow has been better.
Snuck out for 9 saturday evening.
First hole, very short par 4, slightly downhill even. Tee it up and break out Scorekiller (my nickname for the ol' Callaway ERC2). Let it rip -- 300+ dead straight down the middle. Siting on the front fringe of the freshly sanded (yuk) greens. Chip it up to 1 foot, at which point my buddy just kicks it back.
Good start. Should have gone straight to the car and called it "finishing 1 under." But no.
2nd hole, slightly longer par 4, but not long. I've now got confidence, and have the guts to go straight over the tree on the right side of the narrow fairway, which blocks the green. Boom -- 300 straight over the sucker...
And the left elbow feels good... but there's now a strange tingle in my previously always-healthy right elbow.
Take my short chip -- takes off at about a 45 degree angle to the right. Duff. Chip up and 2-putt.
Next hole, reachable par 5. Tee it up, swing...
OUCH!!!
Dribbles into the water in front of the box. Tee up another...
OUCH!!!
Dribbles into the same drink.
And that was the story. -1 after 1 hole, finished at +10, or thereabouts (I stopped keeping score).
One gimpy elbow sucks -- 2 makes for a long round.
This shit better heal by the time this new bout of light rain stops, in a couplefew days.

Back spasms combined with wind and rain fucked me over this weekend. My first triple digit round in a many years. To top it off, that 101 had 3 birds. Took double-par on many a hole and walked to the next as the back was fucking me over. I was visiting my family in Texas and didn't want to waste the round as I see them rarely. Otherwise, I would have quit after hole #3 when I tweaked something back there.

Nothing adds to the enjoyment of a round like severe back pain.
Makes the ball go reallyreally straight, too.

I can shoot that round when perfectly healthy.

If I'm working up a strong beer buzz, and someone shows up and wants to play when I'm already liquored, I'm MORE than capable of dropping triple-digits.
If I stay reasonably sober, or at least don't start the besotting until I tee off, then I can keep it in the doubles -- if I'm healthy and sober, and post high 90's... let the freaking bitching begin.

Dins,
Indy playing golf completely sober: 88-95
Indy playing golf with a couple drinks: 85-87
Indy playing golf with about 6 Jack/Coke doubles: 76-82
Indy playing golf with 8+ Jack/Cokes: 95+
Honestly, I can't play golf without a few drinks. Without the drinks, I grip the club too tight. Everything is stiff. I just can't relax and play. Put a little "liquid calm" in my veins and I can play well. Maybe I can have the same result using a muscle relaxer...

41-38-79 on Saturday.
God-damn triple bogey on #9 sucked ass. Easy par 3, 130 yards uphill and I tank one OB off to the right of the green. Still, any round that begins with a 7 is always a good one.

I'm assuming there was alcohol involved.....
the thing that prevents me from posting consistently low scores (and by low I mean lower to mid 70's) is I almost always inevitably have one or two holes that fuck the score up, and by fuck it up I mean doubles at best and "others" at worst....that's why I usually fair better in match play than I do in medal tournaments...but match plays tournaments around here are fast becoming a thing of the past

Felix, yes, there was alcohol involved.
Like you, I have those blow-up holes as well. Our club championship is done with match play, but we use handicaps. I tend to do very well in these tourneys too. I'll have a couple snowmen, but I usually get double-digit pars and a bird or 3 mixing in the stinkers and a couplefew bogeys. My handicap is back in single digits. 8.8 index now. I have not been this low in 13 years. Perfect...golf game finally trending back to the way it was in my prime and kids are now old enough to start sports....

Sunday morning I will be at this fine golf course.

Best bud in Dallas is coming to visit for the long weekend. Have always wanted to play the Donald Ross course.
I really want to play the Pete Dye course, but it is basically invite only and costs about $400/round. I got an invite one time from a local Dr., but had to pass because he was going at noon and I had work obligations.

Amazing to have these two gems within 25 minutes from home.

Regulation Tees 5981 69.5
131
Ross Tees 6517 72.3
132
Gold Tees 7030 72.3
135
That's what I love about great course designers....over 1,000 yards difference and only 4 slope rating points difference between the forward and back tees...obviously the course rating is different, but the slope rating indicates theres almost as much trouble for the higher handicapper playing from the front tees as there is for low handicappers playing the tips
fuck, I'm jealous-that looks pretty tasty
from the Pete Dye course
Gold Tees 8102 yds course rating 80.0 slope rating 148
fuck me runnin...a 301 yard Par 3? Uh I think that exceeds PGA standards

The 2010 PGA Professionals Tournament will be played here next month. 312 PGA Pros across the country. Day 1 is at the Donald Ross course. Day 2 and 3 are at the Pete Dye course. I can't wait. I'll definitely be in the gallery for that.

Without looking it up, the par rules says something like "The number of shots it takes an expert player to complete the hole with two putts."
I'm not sure if bombing a driver 300, then getting it to stop on the green (didn't look at the course layout, I would hope they allowed for rolling it up on, rather than protecting it) is a reasonable expectation, even for an "expert player."
Hell, I sometimes play a hacker course or two with par 4s that long... which is kinda cheesey for anyone under the age of 65...
Not that I hit many of those greens, mind you... but I seem to find my way on the apron (front, side, whatever) fairly frequently. Any sort of halfway decent chip/pitch/bump
should net a bird at that point, but with me, you never know.
I'm all for a good challenge, but breaking out the Scorekiller, or even a 3W on a par 3 just seems wrong.

Still hitting the old irons but I played 27 today.
41-40-40
Pretty consistent, but it could've been so much better. I hit the ball in the water off the tee on three of four par 5s on the first 18 and still managed to par all three of them.

to top it off, that 300 yard par 3 has a lake all along the right side, sand and waste bunkers all along the left side.

I'm pretty sure I remember watching a U.S. Open and one of the par 3's was 248 yards long and hearing the announcers say the max length for a Par 3 in a USGA sanctioned event (of which the US Open is one) could not exceed 250 yards......I'm not sure whether a PGA only event is subject to those rules
there are lots of guys on the PGA that aren't capable of hitting a 300 yard par 3 hole with their tee shot because they can't hit it 300 yards

Seems the USGA has "guidelines" on how long a hole must be. The key term is "effective playing length". Since I have not see the hole, maybe it is downhill resulting a shorter effective playing length. This Pete Dye course is on some very rough terrain with large elevation changes. It was said to have been built on the side of a "mountain" but I'd say it is actually a rather large hill.

Hence, the qualifier of me calling it a hill.
Guess what? Here's the "mountain" nearby that people ski at. Slopes take less than a minute to get from top to bottom.

Day 3: Harbour Town
Day 4: Robert Cupp Course at Palmetto Hall

The next time I get to travelling to play, I really wanna hit Salishan. Never played there, and I understand it's pretty awesome since Peter Jacobsen went through and did a slight redesign. Less than 2 hours from me, just south of Lincoln City, so not a radical road trip. Siletz Bay in the background.

Then again, screw those dreams of Hilton Head, or the fine courses on the Oregon Coast -- right now, I'm dreaming of getting out to the local hacker courses... IF IT'D EVER STOP RAINING.
El Nino is kicking our ass. Made for great February golf -- but recently, we've been breaking all sorts of records for lowest-high-temp for the date. Haven't seen 70 in quite a while, which would be pretty normal for this time of year. Isn't raining constantly or anything (like it usually does in the winter), but been getting some bigtime downpours. We often get the occasional downpour this time of year... every few days or weeks. But this is usually the start of the Dry Season, and it sure hasn't happened this year so far. Although usually once this crap does dries up during El Nino, it often gets blistering hot for the next few months, and won't rain a drop... which 95 ain't exactly the best golf weather either, but it generally doesn't bother me.
Couple of days ago, our high temp was... 59. Latest in the spring we've ever had a sub-60 day. Thanks, Algore.

Actually, a couple of guys I know who don't seem to give a shit about the weather played some of the booyah Arizona courses several years back. If you sign on to play in August, some of those resorts damn-near pay you to play there.
I've seen some deals where it's 2 days unlimited golf, plus a room overnight, plus dinner for some ridiculous deal, like <$100... not sure if they still do those or not.
Since who the heck wants to play when it's 120 out?

My dad lived in Chandler for a couple of years and had the pleasure of playing Troon North. He said it was the hardest course he ever played.
Btw, playing Zona golf is such a task, especially when putting.
I played Sun Ridge Canyon and Eagle Mountain about 10 years ago.

What's sick is this year was the second year the guys went so the "annual" portion of this began this year. My regular playing partner and cousin had a baby 2 weeks before. This is the first year I got the invite and even harder to get is the green light from the Mrs. since this venture is about $3000 whenit is all over with. I would have been the only one under 40 who went. Most of the guys who I play with are 42-46 but all are single digit cappers so it's a great group who like to party on the course Rodney Dangerfield-style. I opted out this year so my bud and I can do it next year. My baby will be about 2.5 months old when we go. I will appreciate the break...

some nice trips planned by my fellow golf forum buds
my known highlights for the season are scheduled to be
Ghost Creek in early June
I've played it before but it's a great layout....I'd love to get myself on the Witch Hollow course, but I don't think I can talk my way on there
Chambers Bay in August
Two of the three Bandon Courses in September
Pacific Dunes
Bandon Dunes
And I'll be spending time working in northern Idaho this year, so Circling Raven will see me a few times
I'll end up playing Palmilla in Cabo in February a great Nicklaus layout
edit-here it is early Saturday morning and today is the first round of a match play tournament I've been playing in for 20+ years
always fun, and never a dull moment :D
