I grew up in St. Louis going to Uncle Tupelo shows when they were cowpunk and not alt country. I still have the Gun cassingle. Started wandering own the FBB path when March 16-20 album came out. got to college and the alt country was all the rage at the college radio station. white label test press of no depression on the radio station wall.
this guy kills me. candy for depressives. this is from sxsww in 2011. i saw this same song performd at sxsw in '95. that tells you that it never happened for american music club.

Alrighty then, this thread has grown new legs. Some really good stuff.
Of course this band is anything but under rated, but since the topic came up the other day in the HOF thread, here it is.

Argus was a great album....never understood why Wishbone didn't hit bigger....
Personnel changes turned them into shit, but the early stuff is great.
That could be said for a lot of bands in that era.....Humble Pie (big fan), Spooky Tooth (big fan)....

Since my mornings in HS consisted of showing up for 2nd Period (had the option to not schedule 1st... so I took it) Auto Shop, followed by Morning Break, followed by PE, followed by Band, followed by Lunch... I found the need to prepare heavily on the way to school.

And what a great start to the day auto shop was... what with those exhaust hoses venting out the floor and whatnot.

The grandaddy is Dave Clark Five, contrast Boorman's dystopian vision of the Dave Clark Five 'house' from Catch Us If You Can, the band are church squatters. As opposed to the Beatle happy-clappy, four doorway pad from 'Help!'.
If you want a Boorman-esque "dystopian vision", he also directed Zardoz.

Sam, listen to those clips, and pay close attention to the solo in "Rock Bottom." Strangers In The Night could easily be the most underrated live rock album ever.
Oh, and UFO without Michael Schenker isn't worth bothering over.

The Cranberries? While they were collecting Grammys, Built to Spill was making some of the best albums you'll never hear. That is unless you listen to T1B radio.

Sorry to dis-agree with you smack, BUT, I have heard them, and guess what? There is a huge difference between good music, and music that is great. And Built to Spill falls in the "good" category.
See, the problem with debating music is that everyone has their favorite, so, we agree to dis-agree. THAT BEING SAID HOWEVER, this then brings us to educated vs. non-educated, let me explain.
Led Zeppelin's "physical grafitti" came out in 1975, some 37 years ago, YET, its still amazing, still vital, still in your fuckin face. Its not top 40 fluff or sugar junk for the brain dead masses.
Its the HAMMER OF THE GODS. Im not asking your "opinion" here, Im telling you. I have the education to TELL you. to TEACH you. I dictate to you, you got that?
Built to Spill is nice music, BUT, when put up against "The Who" "Pink Floyd" "Led Zeppelin", "The Beatles", "Elvis", "The Stones". Metallica, U2, etc............they dont measure up.
NOW, I fully dont expect you to understand what I just said, and thats ok, life is full of morons.
I only ask that you open your mind and realize that Built to Spill is nice and good, nothing wrong with their ART at all. BUT, dont give me your bullshit about them being as good as the cranberries.
I can smell your bullshit from miles away, and it stinks.

Brad, I have more Xeppelin and Floyd albums, live boots and outtakes than just about anybody on the planet. And I'm here to say Built to Spill is fucking great. Come to chat some Saturday night and we'll do a Zep/Floyd/BtS comparison. I'll even throw in some of the MANY Elvis songs I have in my collection.

Because he's smart like that.
And BTS couldn't be any more mediocre if they tried.

What about Jewel? She is vastly underrated as an artist. Most you dipshits in here would gladly pass her off as pure fluff. YET, she is truly amazing in my estimation.

Im gonna have to beg to differ with you here. Do me a favor and get her live DVD. Its a double DVD set of two live shows in Dallas. Three and a half hours of pure amazing artistry. We are talking about an artist who does not have any down time here. Every song is interesting and worth the price of admission on its own.
Her voice has tremendous depth. A contra-alto which reveals so much pain and angst, and then, when she wants, she can hit the upper registers with the crystal clarity of an opera singer.
I am gonna go out on a limb here and say with authority, she has a voice without peer. GO out and listen to her voice on the christmas classic, "Oh Holy Night". When she hits the high note, I dare any human being to not be visibly shaken to their very core.
The first time I heard her hit the high note in "Oh Holy Night", my body convulsed into millions of chill bumples, it was as close to a religious "otherworldly" experience that a human being can have.
To fully describe it, I will only say that her voice becomes , at that moment, a singular pure sound, a sound so pure and crystaline, so angelic, that its as if the almighty Himself, sent his finest angels down to touch us all. I KID YOU NOT, at the moment she hits that high note, her voice goes from being folksy and sweet, to the most beautiful sound that has ever come from a human being on planet earth, or any other planet in the universe. IN OTHER WORDS, it would be impossible to create a sound as beautiful and pure from any other source, living or non-living.

Don't need to. I saw her open for Neil Young and Crazy Horse when she was touring in support of "Pieces of You." I know what she sounds like live. She has a great voice. Her lyrics range from dece to meh to WTF is that hippie bitch talking about?
